Probably just the letter sequence of plates currently being manufactured and released.

Reminiscent of the days of the home VCR?

from Fortune Magazine...

But before the wave of dollars, the Hollywood studios tried to block the VCR in court via the case of Sony Corp. of America v. Universal City Studios. In one of the most important decisions for the future of entertainment, the Supreme Court ruled in 1984 that consumers had a right to tape copyrighted broadcasts for their own use and that companies that made the devices could not be held liable for possible infringements. Known as the Betamax decision, the ruling became the precedent that allowed all kinds of technologies to flourish.

granted, this was a US case, based on US law...

Well, the CBC gives me he distinct impression that they are confused about their role as the nation's broadcaster and are acting more like "Elections Canada" what with all of the Andrew Chang fronted promos for The National touting their high journalism standards and taking them seriously while covering this important election four you, me, us... blah blah blah.

That said, the CBC seemed to miss this one...  David Menzies of Rebel Media (and Oakley Show fame) was denied access to the Prime Minister's press conference fallowing his visit with the GG at Rideau Hall on Wednesday morning...

Lots of memories...  I had just finished a week of afternoon shifts, so I was on days off... and no where near the studio...

Our two youngest (twins) started kindergarten that morning...  my wife and I had just returned home from dropping them off at their school.  I had turned the TV on, she wanted to watch Regis and Kathy (and I wanted to poke my left eye out)...  after the second jet stuck the other tower, ABC News broke in with live coverage.

A neighbor on our street had been in the Canadian Armed Forces (finished his tour and dis-charged) but I remember him telling me that even though he had been out for six years, he could still be re-activated in the event of a national crisis...

Remember the constant use of the clip of Bush blaming Canada.... "Well, we know they (terrorists) came from Canada"  In fact, the terrorist pilots received their ground school and fixed wing flight lessons in Florida.  details....

I also remember a clip that ran frequently in the ABC news coverage...  a man wearing a jacket with some sort of US agency crest or logo on it...  "Well we knew this was going to happen...  We had advance notice, We heard chatter".   ABC used the clip of that man extensively over a couple of days...  then it was pulled, gone....  and apparently, so was the individual.

Just a guess, but I would think that the CBC Map logo would have been created and used to herald in the microwave network completion and use starting in the summer of 1958. The "Trans Canada Skyway" was inaugurated on July 1st, 1958.

The arrival of colour broadcasting in 1966 saw the use of the "CBC Butterfly" logo with the accompanying harp music.

According to a CBC report by Meagan Fitzpatrick the first location in Toronto (which has been the centre of today's coverage) is owned by a franchisee.

It is not a sole U.S. corporate parent endeavor.

Idiots!   Hope the morons are caught and dealt with.

I also recall another incident of tower vandalism in the late 80s.   Three yahoos cut the guy lines to a Bell Telephone Microwave Relay Tower in Eastern Ontario. I recall watching news coverage stating that it occurred near Cornwall, Ontario. But I have also read that it happened near Brockville.

Major disruptions to long distance phone service as well as network television feeds occurred until restoration crews could re-route and then replace the tower and relay equipment.

The microwave radome is the white ring or donut around the lower area of the 360 restaurant.

I saw a crawl Monday night on Channel 23 that read as follows:

"Attention: WIVB and WNLO are moving frequencies after July 29th at 2 AM. If you use an antenna to watch for free, you must re-scan your television set after July 29th at 2 AM, to continue receiving these channels. Visit WIVB.com or TVanswers.org. Cable and satellite viewers are not affected."

All of which means they're both going sooner than the August 2nd date one of their engineers told me about a few months ago. I believe the new channel is 36, which would also mean Yes TV's Toronto/Hamilton signal will also have to be gone by then.

...

I'm not entirely sure from the crawl whether they mean early in the morning of July 29th or after 2 AM on the 30th. But if you wake up next Monday and channels 4, 23 and 36 are gone, you'll know!

Channel re-alignment is occurring now...   WIVB / WNLO dropped from RF 32 just after 10am this morning...

The 2 hour PBS documentary "American Experience: Chasing the Moon" is airing at various times this week.

It is filled with clips of network coverage from CBS/Cronkite, and ABC/Reynolds.   And even covers the some of the perspective of the print media.

The ascent engine on the LEM was the only critical system on the LEM without a redundant or back-up system. If the ascent engine on the LEM did not fire, The New York Times had a Headline/front page already to go to press...  "MAROONED".

There is clip of a press conference where a young Lloyd Robertson (then with CBC) asks the Apollo 11 crew if they have had time to think of the philisophical message theit mission has meant.

The setup is the post mission world tour that NASA and the USA sent the Apollo 11 crew on.  It showed and admitted that the vast majority of the training for the crew focused on the flight and mission, with very little thought being given for how to prepare the astronaunts for the scope of world public/media reaction.

Of all the netorks and reporters in the world covering this story at the time, they choose a clip with Lloyd Robertson of CBC.  Canada was there!!!

I had a crystal radio set similar to the one that g121 posted above. I would have been about 5, and received it as a Christmas gift (had to wait till spring for Dad to string a wire antenna out of my bedroom window to the tree in the front yard).

A couple of years later, my brother and I each received the Eldon radio kits as Christmas gifts...  we now had our own radios, so there would be no more fighting over the radio. That same year, I received 3 more Eldon radios from various aunts/uncles as Christmas gifts...  it got to the point where I could guess that it was an Eldon radio by the size and weight of the box...  (ungrateful little brat...)

With the Obama Osama gaffes from 2011, the majority of the anchors either corrected them self or were corrected by a co-anchor.

Not so with Carolyn Jarvis of Global fame....  she just kept going and going... And when you think of it, she would have had a producer and director in her ear, and script on the teleprompter.

She must of just tuned everything out...
