i agree with paterson1.  limbaugh may be talented in what he does in the US, but that has little to do with AM radio in Canada.  unless 6079 is suggesting that rush's "style" influences our own talk show hosts, i fail to comprehend the statement that he "saved AM radio" in this country..

BTW, thanks paterson1 and 6079 for returning the thread to debating broadcasting topics... where it should be. https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons3/smile.png

can we PLEASE move on from political discussions and who should get banned for what? this isn't the first thread to be noticed, and absolutely not why i come here.   btw, ford's title is "premier" without the extra "e". so let's all find more relevant topics to this board.

I don't care who's left or right politically here.  but how many still have a box with razor blades, splicing tape,, and a grease pencil ferreted away?

That's a good point RadioAaron.  90% of the playlist has to be before 1981 to be eligible, and if it were to be a "true oldies", one would think that request would have been in the original application.

i have a pet theory about this.... oldies? certainly a unique hole in the market that would appear to be competitively non-offensive.  however....  the community is craving an FM Country signal.  just sayin, that sometimes the situation "changes" between application and launch.

ITV UK isfilming a movie starring Michael Sheenabout the Millionaire cheating scandal.  Supposed to air sometime this year.

There are some good youtube docs about both millionaire and press your luck.... although agreed, the press guy technically wasn't "cheating"

I grew up in the mid-late 80s as a metalhead teenager but still as a radio geek.   Small market northern ontario radio was all things to all people back then. so some of my favourite radio songs....  they still sound great today.

Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
Pour some sugar on me - Def Leppard
Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
These Boots - Kon Kan
Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Great White

Should point out that the studio version of Smoke On The Water was released in 1972 and not 1969. The Deep Purple Mach one the line up that recorded Hush and Kentucky Woman was still active for most of 1969.

I will say the best version of Smoke on the Water was on Deep Purple's  88 live album "Nobody's Perfect" where the tempo was increased exponentially.  My college band used this pretty successfully.  Purple also re-recorded Hush as a studio add-on to that live album, but not quite as well as the original.

Another example of a generational difference would be Kiss 1974 "Cold Gin".  theKiss original was not without nuance, but the 88 version by Death Angel is sped up and enhanced the original..IMHO

Point is, decent hard rock was cemented in the 70s.  not trying to hijack this thread, but inject a bit of curiosity that my next generation experienced in the 80s..

how much, if anything, did postmedia take from the gov't bailout of newspapers?

the Barrie Today online paper from Village Media just announced yesterday the hiring of a new legal affairs reporter for the next five years, thanks to the gov't local journalism fund.

things that make you go hmmm.....

what's your question Fitz?  trump is a fukking idiot.  there are people lining up to sue fox news for promoting the chloroquinine "cure" that trump touted and fox pushed.  I can only wish the "anti-maskers" would actually inject themselves with purell and level the curve on darwin's natural selection list.

that said, i love how the reporters are not putting up with the nonsence and letting trump make himself look like an idiot.

That information is false. NHL is only responsible for blocking live content.
"Encore presentation" does not apply.

It's my understanding that rogers has the right via their NHL agreement to dole out regional rights in Canada.  So TSN only has the rights to broadcast  Leafs games to TSN4 (Ontario region) for example, and they are obligated to block Leaf broadcasts to their other markets.

This could be part of the contract that includes legacy games?  i dunno, just a hypothesis.

Instead of reruns of old games, why not air scripted programming? Last month, I read about a Taiwanese sports channel replacing their cancelled games with a basketball animated series from Japan. That show was dubbed in English, in Toronto, no less. I'm not sure Bell or Rogers would go for that and there aren't tonnes of modern sports dramas, but it's an angle that wouldn't result in mindboggling rerun blackouts.

the TSN/Sportsnet licences don't allow for much scripted programming.  that's why they haven't adopted the all "Slapshot" format already.  they are required to produce a specific amount of live or live to tape content each day, mostly CanCon.  Sry, I haven't looked up the CRTC licence details, but that's why they aren't carrying movies or other tv series.  Maybe they should buy the rights to Takeshi's Castle or American Gladiators.... something just to kill time and almost sports-ish?

good luck to them.

Was the choice of doctor the Ontario gov't chose to introduce the "slides" intentionally boring to listen to?  the monotone and awkward delivery distracted me from what facts he was presenting.  Not surprised to hear that the media wasn't presented with advance copies of the "slides" since that would have reduced the impact of the boring doctor.

too cynical???

When I asked Nord, they said i had to modify my router so that all devices would be invisible to make their product fully effective.

there are a couple of weaker free vpns that work as add ons to firefox or chrome.  i find they work about 50% of the time.  for awhile i was getting the bbc and channel4 sites.bbc got smart.
problem is that every time my firefox updates, it doesn't recognize the add on unless it's been updated at the same time.
do not use ghost vpn.  the leaks are not worth it for the free version.

ya this is a little odd, since the station was purchased in 2017 for either $600k or $1.2 million depending on which evaluation you use.  It's actually been on air since 2008.  And, in spite of consecutive annual losses, the Commission still imposed a CCD commit of $78,000 as a result of purchase.  It does beg the question why Vista chose to divest itself of this property in the first place back in 2017 and why a single station operator would choose to make this investment.

I have one question about these radio ads.    Could be wrong but I think the total price tag is about 30-million, and I have to wonder why.   Turn on the radio or tv and it is all covid-19 all the time.   The numbers, how to avoid getting it, what to do if you suspect you have it, the symptoms.   Is there really a need for the  ads when all the updated info you need is already right there.    Could probably buy a lot of masks and ventilators for 30-million dollars.

...because it's pretty clear there are still some asshats that aren't getting the message!

Quebec released their list of essential services today.  Telecom and cable providers are on there.  So is print journalism, and local/national broadcast media outlets.

I expect the same from Ontario, and if the feds go all out with their emergency measures, broadcast is federally regulated so it will be there for sure.

It was, in fact, the virus that kept them alive in the morning.

From Broadcast Dialogue:

“Peter Kash and Blake Carter, the previous morning team on Flow 93.5, have graciously agreed to delay their move to afternoons so that Flow can remain local during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Steve Jones, in an email. “We will launch The Breakfast Club once the crisis has passed, and Blake & Peter will move to afternoons.”

But given the nature of this unprecedented emergency, that move may well be a ways off.

Stingray delays Flow 93.5’s transition to U.S. morning show amid COVID-19 crisis

Kind of ridiculous.  stingray recognizes the need and importance of local radio, yet they're still prepared to abandon it at the earliest possible moment after this current crisis is over.  That's embarrassing for so many people on so many levels.
