SOWNY » Sports Streaming Puts U.S. Cable In Penalty Box. Could It Happen Here? » Yesterday 11:25 pm

This is one of those speculation posts that annoy me. Of course it won’t happen here. Rogers and Bell are trying to slow cord cutting as much as humanly possible in this country. Everyone knows that. TSN+ features overflow programming that almost nobody wants to watch. That’s why it’s so cheap.

SOWNY » A Real Switch: Major New York City Station Abandoning FM For AM Only » September 19, 2023 4:39 pm

This is interesting. In recent years other than some overflow play by play the AM has basically been a network feed of ESPN Radio while the FM has offered some local programming. One would assume the local shows will move to AM.

It's done within a few years, so milk it for whatever's left.

Those right wingers do not buy the products advertised.
Go Centre Left and there will be a stronger response to the ads.

Is there a dominant centre left talk station anywhere in North America other than CBC Radio One?  I don't know of one.

I don’t have a problem with it because they fact check each other. Also, the moderator supposed to be unbiased. This one is not so he should be held to account.
He frequently makes post that are political, despite claiming that he doesn’t, and often post things with headlines either aren’t quite true, or speculative. I’d like a good counterbalance balance to that.

A good colour person shouldn't repeat what just happened.  They should explain how or why it happened and what is likely to happen next.

It sounds like BS but the networks claim that traditional ratings don’t matter for late night shows because they are now more concerned with bits going viral. Fallon has had many of those.

Conan has said a few times that he loved to act like a giant jerk to interns and low level employees and watch them clue into the fact that he was doing a bit.

There have been rumours of either drug use or alcoholism around Fallon for quite some time.

It’s because an AM antenna needs to be bigger than an mp3 player to be effective.

The only good thing about the vertical ownership oligopoly in this country is that this kind of stuff doesn’t happen every three months. It’s ridiculous how often viewers are held hostage by multi billion dollar corporations down there.

You must be a conservative voter. The Greenbelt has only really been the top story for a two weeks.
Going backwards before that, it was Trudeau‘s handling of:
the housing crisis
the Meta news ban
inflation
the cabinet shuffle
the Ukrainian refugee crisis
the carbon tax
Chinese interference
the healthcare crisis
and the Trudeau Foundation.
Talk radio is tough on Doug Ford for 14 days and you’ve had enough.

SOWNY » Another New Radio Format: Sports -- & Music? » August 29, 2023 11:18 pm

A little independent radio company in the US had a format called Tailgate Radio about 5 years ago.  It was actually well done.  Imagine Boom with a smattering of the current top 10 country and top 10 hot AC hits.  The music must have been hand picked because nothing too jarring played back to back.  I'm sure it didn't have ratings success but it was like listening to an iPod on shuffle but it flowed.

Not really, I was kind of being facetious. But what if there's some breaking sports news overnight - a death of a famous athlete, an injury update about a Blue Jay or something unexpected? Even a late night west coast ball game that goes into extra innings and has an effect on Toronto's playoff hopes? (The Seattle Mariners, for example.) That can certainly happen, but the sports guy can't update it, if there's no live sports guy to do it.

My point is it's not totally live 24-7 if it's not totally live 24-7. But no, it wouldn't make any economic sense to have a live sports, business or weather person at 3 AM in most cases.

If Tiger Woods gets hit by a bus at 3 in the morning and dies the news people will probably handle it and put it in the first block.  I think if an important west coast game goes late the sports person stays.  I think I noticed that during the hockey playoffs.

Social media can be a really great aggregator for news. The quality of your feed can be completely dependant on who you follow. Until recently, Twitter was my first stop to get up-to-date.

But not Facebook.  If you only relied on Facebook for news, you'd know about every dog ever adopted, every celebrity death, and everyone selling a used pair of rollerblades in your city, and nothing else.

I’m pretty sure we’ve had this discussion before about “the first” podcast station.
iHeart had been doing this format in the US for a while already on some of its HD stations.  It seemed like at was just podcasts on shuffle without a set schedule. I don’t see any stations still doing it except one online station running environmental podcasts so they appear to have abandoned the idea.

It's ironic that CBS did that report when CBS all news radio stations play the commercials all the time and have for many years.
