Well, this might be as close as you'll get to actually listening:

I had the pleasure of listening to it as well. Great interview. Accents are actually a lot of fun to examine and it's amazing how they can differ, even between close geographical areas like Toronto and Buffalo.

It's interesting how presenting the news in a thick Scottish brogue would be considered distracting whereas Maria Madden's Irish lilt (which was very heavy when I first heard her do the news on St. Paddy's Day of all days a few years ago) seems more "charming".

I've learned to take a few deep breaths (and then do some research) before flying off the handle.

A few months ago I heard a station promoting their winning a RTDNA award. My first thought was to complain that they can't even get RTNDA right.

Fortunately, I did nothing.  Then I discovered it became RTDNA back in 2010.

Whew!

That's basically it. I'm actually not that into baseball (but my wife is) so I'm usually not paying close attention. I find it less distracting when the voices are familiar.

Funny thing. SN just aired a spot for YouTube promoting Tuesday's game.

My problem with the Facebook games is that they seemed foreign because the "home crew" wasn't broadcasting.  They were produced by a dedicated MLB crew specifically for facebook.  It looks like the same will happen with youtube.

You get used to voices and mannerisms.  While technically it looked fine, it didn't seem right because it wasn't "our" broadcast.

As for not being on regular OTA TV, I have to wonder just how much longer OTA will even be a thing.  Maybe it's just because I'm getting old and crotchety, but years ago, I played with OTA and fiddled with the grey (and not so grey) satellite services and have been a Bell satellite subscriber for years.  In preparation for our upcoming move, even though there is already a Bell satellite dish at the new place, I decided I have had enough with that technology and was able to get a sweet deal from Rogers to ignite me into the 21st century.

With another thread deriding spots having been started, I thought I'd start one highlighting spots that actually make you stop and pay attention, turn the volume up, or even back up a PVR recording just so you can watch it.

I realize that everybody's tastes are different but here are three of my favourites to starts things off:

1.  Alpine credits radio spots.
All based on the word "approved", they're creative, silly, and well acted.  Just fun to listen to.  I find myself turning the radio up when one comes on.

2.  Ancestry.ca -- Irish eyes are smilin'
It was back around St. Patrick's day this year when Ancestry ran a spot featuring a young female voice singing the song.  I was so captivated by the 10 or so seconds of the song I heard, I had to see if I could identify  it.  After playing the spot several times, I put it through soundhound which correctly identified it:

The spot starts playing the song at the 25 second mark.  (right when the vocals start)

The song was recorded in 1960 by Joni James.  I'm almost ashamed to admit I'd never heard of her before.  Aside from have ancestry burned in my head, I discovered an amazing vocalist who basically gave it all up in in the early 60s to care for her sick husband.

3. Doctors Without Borders - Everybody Hurts
Although I haven't contributed, (yet) the spots do the job without being preachy.  If it does nothing else, it really puts your own  complaints into perspective.  Unlike other charities who try to guilt you into contributing, this one doesn't seem to do that.

Ok then.  What spots (regardless of media) make you, in a positive way, sit up and take notice?

When Stan Larke ran the Humber College radio program in the 70s, he would get up in front all the would-be radio stars attending the "cattle call" and deliver a speech telling it like it really is.  You know, the fact that your first gig isn't likely to be mornings in Toronto, and that graduates will probably be living hand to mouth and making next to nothing for a while, that sort of thing.  He was basically trying to scare people out of applying.

I remember because I was there.  The young, wet behind the ears kid that was me and already knew everything didn't believe it.  I suspect most others in their late teens who thought they were god's gift to the industry didn't either.

Once I left the biz a few years later for a gig on the other side of the mic, and travelling to places like New Liskeard and Kirkland Lake and meeting some of the jocks there, I started to realize just how right he really was.

The problem is that such sage advice is generally wasted on the young.

I'll have to listen for him.  And thanks for links to the podcast.  From the bits I've heard, it sounds like there's some good stuff in there.

Back when I was in college, I found it comforting to hear our instructors on the air if for no other reason than it showed they could "walk the walk" and they weren't just parroting from some textbook.  Sure, you want an experienced voice tell you how it's done, but there's nothing quite like being "shown" how it's done.

Upon reflection, while criminal charges may not be warranted, a financial penalty might be more appropriate.

Likewise, the subject of his comment might take him to task and Sue for defamation. I'm sure a hefty lawsuit, win or lose, will make him and others think twice.

They're also bringing back "Battle of the Blades" this season.  I'll leave it to the reader to find out about it themselves if they've never heard of it.  But the show has done a great deal to get hockey players to want to learn the finer points of skating to become better hockey players.

The first time I heard something like this was on Sint Maarten about 20 years ago.  Radio station PJD2 in Phillipsburg would play the Saint Martin Song (“O Sweet Saint Martin’s Land") which is the de-facto local anthem, every day at noon.  I believe it still does.

The BBC tried much the same thing in 2016 with very mixed reviews.  The episode of "Porridge" they did, worked, but the remake of "Are you being served" fell flat on its face.  It wasn't that the actors were bad, but they tried so hard to re-create the original you kind had to ask yourself, "why bother?" it's been done already.

Even earlier, Australian TV did two seasons of "Are you being served" starring "John Inman" from the original.  In several shows, they just redid the old scripts and it felt like it.

But back to this side of the pond...

I can't help but think, "why bother?".  I'm certainly hard-pressed to imagine them doing some of the scripts in today's politically correct environment.

Having Normal Lear be a part of this does lend some credibility to it.  I'll be watching.  Whether it will be a triumph or a train wreck will have to be seen.

Kind of reminds me of an ad I saw on a transit bus once for learning to read.

At the time I thought it was rather ludicrous. Someone kindly pointed out to me that it's designed to make those who can read aware of such services for those who can't.

I would imagine the same concept would apply here as well. Second language speakers are being made aware that their friends and family who don't speak English can use the service and how to do it.

Things have changed.  The trend is to have people on air who sound like humans, not "announcers".  Remember when a typical CBC radio newscast was dry and totally devoid of any hint of bias?  Sure, you got the facts, but it was boring as hell.

Then the likes of Hesketh, Sinclair and Smythe and others came along adding their own opinions to the mix.  Yes, it was billed as news and opinion but you can't argue its popularity.

Maybe I've become jaundiced but can you really ever get a newscast that doesn't have _any_ bias?  You can't tell me that even today's CBC is completely impartial in its approach.

I look at them like I do movie and restaurant critics.  You have to know the reviewer, understand their own tastes and remove those overtones to get the information you want.

As for McKee?  I rather like his approach and I really like the 6:00 newscasts.  I may not agree with every opinion but that's not the point.

We use:

Bell Satellite for our TV -- currently subscribe to the "better" package
Freedom Mobile for our Cell phones
voip.ms and freephoneline.ca (fongo) for my voip needs
Teksavvy for Internet (60mbit unlimited plan on cable)

Love Teksavvy but their TV offering is too new to switch over to.  I require PVR capability and they're just not there yet.

Been a Bell satellite subscriber for over 10 years.  The only problem is that the technology is getting long on the tooth and with an impending move, it's time to look to alternatives.  As it turns out, the house we're just about to go firm on (pending the requisite home inspection) already has a satellite dish mounted (so I could stay with that) but the current owner is also a FIBE customer.  Folks on RedFlagDeals say that Bell is very anxious to wean folks off the dish and is willing to make some very attractive deals, especially if the house is serviced by fibre.  (Won't know about that until I speak with the current owner later this week.)

Very interesting.

This seems to be specific to their Satellite offering, not their FIBE service.  In a way, that's understandable because there are bandwidth limits to how many channels they can carry.

We're Bell satellite Customers and are actually contemplating a move to a new house.  I've heard that Bell is very anxious to get people off the dish and onto FIBE and that they've made it _very_ financially advantageous to do so.  I'll be curious what I find, especially since the house we're looking at right now already has a mounted Bell dish.

As for the simsub, that's just scummy.  But it's not without precedent.

I remember (quite a few) years ago when A&E was going to run a Monty Python movie and their airing had to be replaced with other programming because CITY has the broadcast rights to the movie and wasn't running it that night so simsub couldn't happen.

That would be such a nifty idea.  Their ad agency should do this and give Radiowiz a commission for the idea.

It's my opinion that a multi-lingual ad like this will, at the very least, grab attention from polyglots if their not paying close attention when they hear another language they're familiar with and don't often hear on TV.  That's what I found, anyway.

Edited to add:
This would probably never happen because of the union hassles involved.  I've once had a gig where I dubbed a single word over the original American voice becuse it was actually cheaper to do than pay the rate to the U.S. voice actor for an "international" commercial.

My thoughts exactly.

I always refer to the excellent example of Andy Barrie when he was on CFRB.  There were several occasions when he had Ernst Zundel on the air with him.  He didn't engage Zundel in debate.  There would be no point.  Barrie just got him started with some leading (I guess you could say bait) questions and would then basically shut up while Zundel dug his own hole, often spiraling into a tirade that did the trick quite nicely.  Listening to Zundel froth at the mouth is all it took to convince the listener this guy was off his rocker.

So let them talk.  Let them (whoever they are) show themselves for what they are.
