I've seen Rogers Radio advertise on competitors in different platforms (eg. Corus' Global TV).

It's Nov 30, and PlutoTV Canada is already up and running. As far as the news lineup, all of Global's news channels (national + local stations) are on there, plus CBS News and Cheddar business news.

I have been meaning to cancel Sirius but it just renewed for six months last week.  Does anyone else find that the sound quality is not that great sometimes?  Some of the music stations I listen to are very thin sounding with not a lot of bass.  When I flip back to local FM the sound is always louder, richer and much fuller quality.

I've noticed that on a majority of their stations. I just thought SXM just super compresses all their stations so they can cram as many as they can on their satellites. FM and streaming sounds so much better.

Looks like CHEX is back tonight. Probably just a technical meltdown last night.

CHEX's 5-day a week morning show will probably more than offset 1 absent 6 PM newscast because of a major technical issue.

Showing sports scores over music is probably a better alternative than having CFTO's anchors painfully read through a poorly written VO matched to game viz.

I honestly wish CTV never got rid of the local sports segments. CFTO's 11:30 newscasts used to be a really well produced newscast, it had the right mix of local news, weather, and sports. Here in Calgary, the 11:30 PM local news is rehashing stories that aired on CTV National News only a few minutes prior.

It would have at least given every major market in Canada the same networks over the air, instead of having this situation where the biggest markets have all the major networks, and cities like London only have CTV Two.

Global would also have the opportunity for putting it’s all-news BC1 on a subchannel in BC.

There's probably a clause in their cable/satellite carriage contracts that prevent BC1 from being distributed free elsewhere, which I would understand.

Broadcasting companies are hiring journalists from non-broadcast mediums (CBC for example have been hiring former newspaper journalists). While their journalistic chops are real, they clearly need work on how they present themselves on TV and radio. I suppose media companies like CBC thinks that's something they can teach newspaper reporters over time.

Calgary and Edmonton also can't run commercial breaks this morning. Calgary just sits on one of their skycam shots with music, while Edmonton is running a couple of internal promos through their control room and eating up the extra time.

It’s 2022, Everyone can get streaming news channels on their TVs and every other device now. Why not do those programs exclusively on those platforms, and go make some money on the main channel?

“But what about the old folks who don’t know how to use those fancy smart TVs?”
Maybe they’re not making shows for that demographic anymore…

Just another reason why Global should have local news in Ottawa.  No excuse for the number two private network not to have a local newscast in a market of 1.4 million people.  Global will never be a national contender for news until they have a real news operation in the nations capital. They are half way there with their bureau, now finish the job.

I doubt a Global Ottawa station will ever happen especially nowadays with the terminal decline of traditional media. They do have a digital local news team in Ottawa alongside the parliamentary bureau that updates Globalnews.ca/Ottawa. The best you can hope from them in the future is a streaming news service similar to CBS News Detroit.

As far as CHUM was concerned, they should have just made CHRO the Citytv station in Ottawa instead of wasting their time with Newnet. That would have had a better shot of maintaining a news service that would still exist today.

If you watch Global news, you may be seeing it in a whole new way Wednesday. The station unveiled a new graphics package for its newscast and it takes some getting used to. As someone who did that job for a while in my dim past, I have to say I'm not crazy about the decision they made - a brownish grey background with white lettering? It's kind of hard to read and doesn't really stand out on the screen very well.

The promos for what's coming up have changed as well, with a bright red banner and some black lettering. And all the weather graphics are new, as well, which should make Anthony Farnell's day. I'm glad they got rid of the "colourforms"-like pictures they used to show sun or storm, but I find the new ones hard to read.

Maybe it will just take some getting used to.

The changes have also spilled over slightly to Corus-owned AM 640. It's replaced its old news stinger at the top of the hour with a new one that's a little bit more compact. Not really all that major to make much of a difference, but if you're used to the old news intro, it's noticeable.

Here’s a video of the new graphics and music…

I wouldn't think many will be listening to the radio for the funeral.  Filler or even trivia can be quite interesting, as long as the hosts know what they are talking about.  Who is doing 10 hours of radio coverage, other than maybe BBC?  When the marching and music is happening the commentators will likely let the sound do the work after they have passed along who is playing or marching, and give a little background information on the group.

Again, has the coverage been overblown?  You can make a case for either side.  However, billions of people around the world will be tuning in tomorrow. So that alone makes it hard to say if the coverage of the Queen's passing has been over the top.

The actual funeral service for the Queen in Westminster Abby will be about one hour.

One of the UK's biggest commercial radio operator, Global, is airing the funeral on all their radio networks.

Global can’t make a big hire like that with a sale pending.
Why Rogers? Because there’s no one else.

If Lisa weren’t available, I wonder who Rogers would’ve tapped to lead the coverage as I can’t possibly think of anyone in their current roster that’s suitable for this type of event. Possibly Tracy Moore?

I'm thinking that Citytv wouldn't have bothered to show the funeral (or extensively cover the Queen's death in general) if they never snagged Lisa Laflamme. You probably would have just seen a regular edition of BT in Toronto, and repeats of Cityline on the rest of the network.

I would think for every on air person they send to London, there’s at least 2-3 others with them (camera ops, chase producers, maybe an engineer, etc). Then there’s the locals they have to hire for technical resources (Sat trucks?), and the venues they are renting out to report from. I could imagine the exorbitant fees being charged for the Buckingham Palace media spots this week.

CTV, CBC, and Global went to wall-to-wall coverage on their terrestrial networks just after 1:30 PM ET (CTV and CBC cut in just after 1:30, Global a few minutes after that). Both CBC and Global left the air around 5 PM ET to let their local news in the Atlantic provinces go to air, Global went until 5:30 ET to allow for local news, but the Western stations got additional national coverage until their local evening news.

yup, Corus is in the midst of relocating On Air / MCR Operations from Calgary to Corus Quay.

As well, the CIII Bancroft transmitter is slated to shutdown very soon, and the main Global feed will be multiplexed onto the CKWS signal in order to continue the Toronto/regional signal to the area.

The problems earlier in the week with the Toronto/Montreal nooner tanking halfway thru was due to automation and newsroom systems being moved to new virtual network servers...  and the existing IT network being taxed by the new traffic load.

The master control move from Calgary to Toronto has reportedly been completed this week, so we are seeing the gremlins of the new playout system across the network.

The shared noon newscast on Global Toronto and Montreal were knocked off the air halfway through the broadcast today due to some kind of technical issue. Master control had to dust off last night's recording of Global National in its place.

Wondering why Global couldn't just put their 24/7 streaming news channel on the air in Toronto & Montreal, or even simulcast CHEX or CKWS.
