If memory serves Rogers once bought a commercial on Mix 99.9 promoting Kiss 92.  The ad was short and in another language.

Does anyone else remember this?

Demographic necessity eh?

Then I guess it's just about time to go get fitted for a pine box...

When was the last time a commercial caused you to try a completely new product or switch brands?  After a certain age your preferences are locked in.  That makes an older audience less desirable to advertisers.

All three could have worked another five years. And all were replaced by inferiority.

The first one is open for debate.  Johnny Carson was doing two or three shows a week and getting killed by Arsenio Hall in the demos that mattered.  Then Jay Leno came along, outlasted Arsenio, and after losing to Letterman for two years, beat him for the next 14 in a row, then took it back to number one for another 4 years after the ill-fated Jay Leno Show.  He also hosted more episodes than Carson.

My question continues to be "why?" What does MLB get out of giving their games away for free on YouTube? In that case, why not a Jays game televised on City?  (And yes, I'm aware the Sunday games are on OMNI in Tagalog.)

I suppose the occasional freebie doesn't hurt and might encourage fandom or attendance if a team is doing well, but MLB loves money. How is this making them any?

Youtube would be paying them a considerable amount of money for this. Yes - you're right - everyone knows what Youtube is, but they're not known for live video, nevermind live sports. This is a toe in the water for Youtube...testing audience levels, technical feasibility, etc. Absolutely guaranteed that they will be in the next round of bidding for some pretty major sports rights.

No one here is under 50 so I'll spell it out.
Young people don't watch TV and baseball's audience will die of old age unless they go where young people are.  They got online with live games with MLB.TV 15 years ago before any other league thought to do it and now the NHL pays MLB to run its digital division.  This is the next step in the evolution of streaming and baseball is leading the way again..

Would the host's sexuality ever come up during a post game show?
I get it on a morning show if you're sharing a story about your personal life that it might come up.
Maybe I'm different than other people but on a post game show I just want analysis of the game. I would find it just as out of place if Mike Wilner had talked about his relationship with his wife (if he has one) on the show. I don't care about your personal life. Just tell me why the bullpen sucks.

I haven't noticed the Adam Wylde ads, to be honest. Though the subway isn't part of my daily commute. Good to see they're promoting that show though.  As for Energy - yes, I've certainly noticed their Instagram ads. I doubt their preference for that medium is because of the content, bur rather that it's relatively dirt cheap.

And their audience lives on Instagram.  That's the biggest reason.

You get used to voices and mannerisms.  While technically it looked fine, it didn't seem right because it wasn't "our" broadcast.

As for not being on regular OTA TV, I have to wonder just how much longer OTA will even be a thing.  Maybe it's just because I'm getting old and crotchety, but years ago, I played with OTA and fiddled with the grey (and not so grey) satellite services and have been a Bell satellite subscriber for years.  In preparation for our upcoming move, even though there is already a Bell satellite dish at the new place, I decided I have had enough with that technology and was able to get a sweet deal from Rogers to ignite me into the 21st century.

I like hearing other announcers. Buck and Pat act like players and share nothing about the inner workings of the current team and constantly tell stories from the 90's. Other announcers including Dan Shulman talk about that day's batting practice and discussions with players on the morning of the current game. Watch a Red Sox or Yankees game and the announcers are light years ahead of Buck and Pat.  People tend to like what they're used to even if it's not that great.

So when did one radio station's exclusive become everyone else's property?

When it went out over the publicly owned airwaves.

Well, if you use that logic, then it's impossible to have an exclusive anymore for long. This has been going on for years in TV, ever since the cable news networks appeared. Fox, CNN, MSNBC and the big American affiliates all regularly take each other's stuff when one of them has a big "get."

I suppose the difference is that on TV, you can stick graphics all over the footage so everyone is sure where it came from.

I remember a long time ago when the Beatles first came to America, there was a huge competition by Top 40 stations to be the first to play their latest song. Many, including WABC, used to put a deliberate tracer over parts of it as the tune played on air, usually someone intoning in a loud whisper, "WABC exclusive!" several times, so none of the other rock outlets in town could record it and rush it to air.

'RB can't do that with the Ford clip, so I suppose getting an on air credit is as much as they could hope for.

An exclusive is only an exclusive until your competitor's next newscast.  It's always been that way.

The CBC doesn't sensationalize anything.  Their documentary series on hockey, a sport Canadians are so passionate about that pre-season inter-squad games get national TV coverage, was so boring that no one watched after episode 1.
This is the Fifth Estate, not Dateline or 48 Hours.  I say handle it with sensitivity and air it.

There's a simple solution.  Move around between the services.  There's no need to have more than one or two at a time with the volume of content on each one.  Go away for 3 or 4 months and there will be lots of new content when you come back.

People can also illegally file download and share by obtaining a VPN (for anonymity) account and a Bittorrent client, total monthly cost $4.   Watch for this to increase as the streaming packages become more fragmented with consumers needing multiple packages to view a few shows.    Here's a bad case: Recently with IndyCar racing coverage.  10 of 17 races are available on NBC OTA while 7 are on Sportsnet Now-plus (including the Toronto Indy!).  SN+ is $200 / year or $28 / month.   So, consumers are expected to fork over $200 for 7 races.   Sportsnet Now-plus' other offerings aren't related to motorsport, mainly consisting of foreign soccer and rugby matches.   IndyCar and Rogers basically shot themselves in the foot, putting their content on a over priced package that most motorsport fans have little interest in.

Is there anything that shows the greed of Rogers and Bell more than the price of the streams of their sports channels?  They get 2 bucks per subscriber on cable. So rather than doubling or tripling their money they charge more than ten times the amount.
