Sometime in the mid-60's I won Ronnie Dove's Greatest Hits from CHUM. I gave the album to my sister. In the 80's on CHUM-FM I identified Whiter Shade of Pale in one note, and won Parachute Club's first album and two tickets to a nightclub for New Year's eve. But I the best prize I ever won was a result of sending Don Daynard my ten favourite oldies and ended up being DJ for a Day (really only one hour) on CKFM's Saturday Night Oldies with Don. To top that off, Don actually helped me a few years later to get my first job in radio. He referred me to Craig Smith who I had met when he was Don's producer and who had recently become the Production Manager at CJEZ. Craig hired me five days after meeting him.

I love the Youtube broadcasts and I'm 66. I enjoy the way they interview players and coaches during the games. The whole broadcast feels so much informal and is more fun to watch and listen to than the regular broadcasts.

There was a time when radio provided me with a feeling of community. Back then something like yesterday would have been covered for sure. Those days are long gone. I just spent two hours in the car listening to a recording of a Hall and Oates concert in Montreal.from 1983. Now those were the good old days!!

Speaking of sound - what station particularly on FM in Toronto would have the best fidelity of sound?

Id have to say CHUM and CHFI would have the most clearest.  Afterall,  the HI stands for "high fidelity" in their call letters.

CKFM used to have a wonderful sound back in the day of Carl Banas and Russ Thompson. The great programming of the time didn't hurt.

Coincidentally when Carl and Russ were both at CJEZ in the late 80's the audio at that station was excellent. Great job, Grant!!

I know they're the new kid in town, but the audio is beyond amateurish. Most of the audio sounds like it's coming out of a tin can. But some audio especially on Mike Bullard's show has more distortion than my old guitar fuzz pedal. Is the engineer deaf? Sorry this is going to sound racist, but I have noticed on a lot of Indian radio stations, the audio is super over modulated. Why is this? Is his a cultural thing?

I mentioned to a co-worker that it was hard to believe that it was 55 years since JFK was killed. I was 10 in 1963, and I still vividly remember my grade 5 teacher telling us in absolute disbelief that he'd been shot. We were glued to the tv all weekend. I didn't hear a peep about the assassination on the radio or tv yesterday. I did catch a bit of Coast to Coast the night before and immediately switched stations when I heard another preposterous theory. They are getting wackier every year.

I haven't heard this spot in a while. Maybe it's off the air. To me it was even dumber than "Heads Up" and revolting, racist and ignorant. It was that spot that was something more or less about saying in Spanish no to smoking pot and driving. Disgusting.

I wish they could be an Oldies station instead of a talk station.

They play a lot of great oldies. I just wish they could mix both stereo channels into one mono channel. Hey CKNT, are you listening?

I've been listening to CKNT a fair bit on the overnights and they've been playing a wide range of music. I've heard a bit of everything from the 50's through the 80s. I haven't heard one song repeated yet. And the music isn't the same old retreads we used to hear on CHUM or as dull as the music sounds on 740. It actually sounds fresh. The only little glitch is that every now and then I am noticing only one channel of a stereo song making it though the mono mix.

Whoever the audio engineer for AM 640 is should be fired. The audio is distorted. i don't know if its over modulation, too much compression or what. It sounds terrible. What are they thinking?

On the drive home from work yesterday afternoon I heard some actual conversation on the station.  They were actually talking about how Canadian they want to make the station and how inclusive they are and so on and so on. I don't know if it was live or pretaped.  I did notice a couple of glitches. One of the speakers microphone was not turned on. And it sounded like the hosts microphone was way too loud and was  distorting quite a bit. That is one thing I have noticed quite often with Indian radio stations they tend to be very distorted or over modulated. I hope these guys can clean up their act by the time they get on the air

Thank you Dale for putting all that music together. What was really neat for me was listening to all the songs from 1963 when I first started listening to rock n roll and CHUM at the age of 10. It was interesting listening from that point on and seeing how the music and my taste in top 40 changed as the years progressed. I can certainly see why I started listening to CHUM-FM in the late 60’s. By the mid 70s I had pretty well given up on Top 40, but interestingly liked it again for a bit in the early to mid 80s. Anyway it was nice having this retrospective to listen to. Thanks again Dale.

I just noticed two sets of Ontario license plates in my underground garage that started with CFRB. I met one of the owners this morning and asked if they were vanity plates. He said no, that's what he got from the dealer. That got me wondering if anyone has seen other radio station call letters on license plates that are not vanity plates.

There was a time when radio really was a part of our lives. Radio was part of our community. Now I’m going back a long time for this example, but the night John Lennon was shot I was listening to CHUM, CHUM-FM and other stations near and far, pretty much all night as were probably millions more. Radio brought us together as we shared our grief on the air and off.

Now most of the young ones today get their headlines from Twitter and Facebook. That’s also where they share their thoughts and feelings – on social media.

I do miss the fact that radio is no longer a major part of my life. But it’s a different world now.  So if CHUM FM doesn't want to do the news, it makes sense to me.

Not just any woman. Christie Blatchford, one of the best journalists in Toronto. She nailed it as usual. The media has to be more accountable and if anyone is going to be quoted, they can't be anonymous. I think there was a time when what happened to Brown would be considered slanderous. Now anyone is a target.
