I follow a wresting podcast, POST, wrestling and it's two local guys from Toronto.  In fact, Toronto Mike had them on as guests within the past two years  They do podcasting as their full time employment.

Here's John Pollock and Wai Ting from POST Wrestling on Toronto Mike'd.

I had a great 90 minute chat with Jon Pole this morning. LOTS of radio talk, including a very detailed play-by-play of how the recent Bell Media firings went down. It's something else.

Humble and Fred weren't paying Bell for that slot.

We've actually been talking about firing radio for 12 months. This morning, we finally pulled the trigger.

Here's today's episode where you can hear Humble and Fred making the surprise announcement.

You are all very kind.

A good spot for cherry picking an episode (or two) is this handy page.

But don't skip the John Donabie ep, or the Keith Hampshire, or the Doug Thompson 1050 retrospective, or the two Stafford gems... enjoy!

She dropped by this afternoon to tell me about the misogyny and sexism she encountered in Canada's sports media industry.

I booked Alan on Humble and Fred last week! That same day he appeared on Toronto Mike'd and was great as usual.

FWIW, when I book guests on Humble and Fred, I never spend a moment thinking about who they work for or which media conglomerate they're affiliated with. I treat Humble and Fred Pirate Radio as if it's an independent podcast because, at its core, that's exactly what it is.

The "best of" material is put together by a chap named Phil Hong and I suspect nobody at Bell Media listens it it before it airs.

Yes, Humble and Fred are live on 820 from 7am to 9am, Monday to Thursday. They rest on Fridays.

Typically, they'll record a "podcast extra" after 9am and that 2+ hours becomes the podcast. The podcast is online by 10am.

They've been on 820 for over a year now. Prior to that, they were live on SiriusXM for five years.

And yes, their studio is on The Queensway, just east of Islington.

TMDS clients.

Toronto Mike, I clicked on the link, read the post, and have a question.. when you wrote " implementing podcast best practices" it caught my eye. Could you give a quick definition of what those are? Considering how many podcasts we as a society listen to these days these practices could be the reason that some podcast shows out there fall flat, and some are well done.

Obvs anybody else with expertise can chime in, there's lots of readers on here who don't have production chops, but would love to get a look behind the curtain.

It's quite the catchall, isn't it?

With Humble and Fred, it's not about changing them or how they broadcast. They know who they are and I wouldn't want to pollute that process they've ironed out over three decades.

With me there's the technical side, guest-booking, and listener engagement. I'll get a little more specific on each of these, so it doesn't read as another 'motherhood and apple pie' statement.

On the technical side, it could be as simple as ensuring the MP3 is fully uploaded before publishing the updated XML. That simple little ditty eliminates the episode only being partially downloaded on subscribers' devices. From the mics to the compression to the XML file itself, there are so many moving parts here alone.

Since I've been booking guests on Toronto Mike'd for several years now, I've learned so much and made so many fantastic contacts. The synergies here are many. A good example happened yesterday. Kevin McDonald from Kids in the Hall appeared on

And just one more thing... Howard ops his own board. He's done so since we launched the podcast over eight years go.

I op the board for Toronto Mike'd, Hebsy on Sports, Gallagher and Gross Save the World, and Ralph Benmergui's new podcast, coming in January 2020.

Let me help you guys out...

Many producers during the terrestrial radio days moved on to bigger things. Dan Duran, for example. Or Jason Barr. Bingo Bob Willette and Jeff Domet have also had formidable careers in the media and are still gainfully employed there today.

With the podcast, there's been a little more churn, but this is a quickly evolving new media and Humble and Fred are now completely independent and pay for everything from their own pockets. In other words, it's not a particularly lucrative position and you're primarily doing it for love of the game.

I wrote many more words here about what this entails and how pleased I am that Humble and Fred have chosen to become TMDS clients.

My all time favourite Lorne Honickman story came from a friend of mine who was at City TV when he was there.

Honickman was one of the world’s biggest Beatles fans, and would talk about them all the time, spewing out trivia about them at the drop of a hat. He could go on for hours about them if you let him.

Well, one day in 1987, George Harrison came in to MuchMusic to tout his latest single, “I Got My Mind Set On You.” Here was an actual Beatle right in the same place where Honickman worked. And where was Lorne? Out on a story for that day’s CityPulse newscast.

He was doing interviews and stand-ups back in those days before cell phones, so frantic efforts were made to try and get him on his cameraman’s radio. They were trying to tell him to get back to the station or miss what may have been his only chance to ever actually meet one of his true idols.

But no matter how many times they tried to raise him, there was radio silence. Harrison was on a strict schedule and had to be out of there in less than a few minutes. And it looked like Honickman would miss his chance.

Harrison got up to leave and made his way to the infamous City TV parking lot back door, where a limo was waiting for him. Just then, Honickman and his camera truck entered the gates of the lot. He got out, totally unaware that one of his heroes was about to walk out the very door he was coming in.

Inevitably, the two ran into each other as Lorne was entering and Harrison was leaving. Honickman was absolutely stunned as he literally bumped into the ex-Beatle. It was probably the only time anyone ever saw Honickman at a loss for words.

As the famed musician brushed by him, all Honickman could say was a breathless, “Hi George!” To which Harrison replied in that famous Liverpool accent, “Hello.” And then he walked to the car.

It may not have been the meeting of the minds he was hoping for, but by a quirk of timing, Lorne actually got to talk to hi

I just heard back from Lorne. Here's what he says...

"The story I did with John was in December 1981.  My assignment was to interview someone about Lennon on the first year anniversary of his death, and about his legacy in the years to come.  I remember thinking that there was no one I wanted to speak to more about that then John Donabie. A legend already at that time.  John immediately said yes to this rookie reporter.   I remember it so well. I was so grateful."

Far be it from me to question Lorn's timeline at City; but he says he got there in mid 1981.  However, Lorne came to my home in December of 1980 the day after the death of John Lennon.  I had interviewed John and he wanted to interview me about it.  Now i swear he was already at CITY; but he may have been working for someone else.  Again perhaps Lorne can straighten me out about the timing.  Just interested.  Oh by the way...HI Lorne!

I'll ask Lorne and report back!
