Unfortunately my all time favorite is not included. It was for CHUM I believe and also done in a few US markets. It was a close up of a woman lip syncing air check-breaks from the station. I always thought it was brilliant, but have not seen it for several years. Anyone have a copy of it I would love to see it again.

Just was talking with The Bride about some of his great performances and there were so many. Personal favourites, Open Range with Kevin Costner. So So movie but he was very good, and of course Lonesome Dove. He was actually in so many movies it is hard to think of an excellent movie that he wasn't in.
SOWNY » What Do You Remember About Working In Radio Or TV On September 11th? » September 11, 2025 10:41 am
I had just left a station in Toronto and It was my first day at a medium market TV station in Central Ontario. I was hired to do sports at 6 and 11. They had done some advertising and promos to mark my arrival. I watched events unfold during the morning from home and rolled into the station mid afternoon to begin my shift. All hell had broken loose in the newsroom and I was sent out with a cameraman to do local reaction type of stuff. There was no sports going to air that evening and that continued. I ended up working News for the next week or so and did not make my debut on the Sports desk for more than a week. A very difficult week to be sure but we all pitched in.
SOWNY » My Pet Peeve: Alleged ... » August 13, 2025 5:58 pm
This is one that has troubled me for years. There was not an "alleged" bank robbery. The bank was either robbed or it was not. As well, I was always taught that the word alleged involving a suspect or charges offered no protection from legal ramifications.
The other one I have wondered about is the phrase "charges have not been proven in court." I do not remember ever writing that phrase, but notice it being used regularly. I don't understand why. If a suspect has only been charged at this time of course the charges have not been proven in court.
Any clarification would be appreciated.

Really? No one has yet mentioned WKRP in Cincinnati. Hilarious, but maybe because for me it really did close to home. I worked with many very much like the characters on the show.
Also on my list, Green Acres, The Hillbillies, and of course Get Smart. Sitting here chuckling just thinking about those shows.

So I was travelling west of Toronto a couple of days prior to Christmas and I spotted a great personalized licence plate. BIG8CKLW. Sadly I was alone in the car and could not grab a picture, but here is my question. Has anyone else seen this plate, and even better, does anyone know who owns it. Is it a former employee of the former power house, or just a fan ? Just wondering.
SOWNY » Jerry Agar Tells Story That Could Only Happen In Radio » November 8, 2024 4:32 pm
I got my first job simply because of networking. In college in late 70's, there was an opening for a jock at a TV-Radio station about 3 hours away. 2 friends got an interview and because I had a car I offered to drive them. We drove through terrible winter storms but made it. While they were being interviewed I met the News Director. I think he was impressed that I got us there despite weather and roads. My interest was in News so we chatted for a while. About a week later I called him to thank him for his time and advice and he said "send me a resume and tape." I did, got the job and that was the start of a 38 year career in Television in small, medium and large market stations.

Did not watch either the first or second time around, and will not watch them this time around. I truly believe that the CBC needs to be cut way back. One english and one french network, and the same thing with radio. All of the other channels gone. We don't need CBC Gem costing tax payer dollars to fund this sort of filler, same with their news channels. If they have good programming that they think people will watch put them on the main channels, otherwise let them go. They are just bloated, expensive wastes of space on the dials.
SOWNY » Was This The Worst Part Of Being On Air At A Small Town Radio Station? » July 21, 2024 8:17 am
Had to do obits at my first job in Mid Western Ontario, and it was bad. But even worse was the daily farm market report. About a 2-3 minute straight rip and read detailing the prices of the day for many different types of cattle and hogs, as well as wheat and other crops. Just awful but I was told that the local farmers made sure it was considered must listening. BTW having never been on a farm in my life I did not have a clue what I was talking about.

Thought about this for many years but could never move forward. I wish great success for this. And of course the most important of all, no voice tracking. Be live.

So I am confused, although that is not difficult. Sold 45 stations, let go 4800 people. That is over 100 per station. There is no way any of these stations had 100 people working at them, even with support (sales, accounting ect.). Where are the rest of the people impacted from ?

Was taught (at Humber College) not to ignore big events like the Bills game while on the air. Instead right off the top and throughout the show promote immediate updates all evening long, as well as promoting what you had ahead. And give the game updates. Gives the listener the best of both worlds, and it really does show that you are live and on top of what is going on in your area.

I know a new weekend replacement for Sandi Rinaldo has not been announced but I would like to add my overpriced two cents worth. I saw Heather Butts filling in last weekend or the weekend before and she was very good. I got to know her while she was working in Barrie and followed her out east and then reporting for CTV. I know she is quite young and has only been with the network for short time but I have been very impressed. She gets my vote. In fact I would like to see her on the Mon.-Fri. anchor desk. She is that good.

SOWNY » CFTO’s 11:30 PM weather » October 1, 2023 8:21 am
It cannot be a union jurisdiction think. Back in the early 2000's CFTO ran a 3 or 4 minute long sports package from TSN inserted into their noon newscast using TSN anchors and shot from their studio. I believed at the time that this would be the first step in doing something like this for their 6 and 11:30 shows but that never materialized.
SOWNY » Acoustic Brunch » July 28, 2023 11:25 am
So I was cruising to the golf course on Sunday late morning as I usually do and flipping around the dial trying to find something to listen to and I happened to hit B-101, the Corus station in Barrie.
They were playing a program they called the Acoustic Brunch. It was quite enjoyable, as opposed to the same 100 songs played on most other stations.
What I found interesting was the diversity in the music they played.
Just a sample, but acoustic versions of hits from Sam Roberts, Bon Jovi, Collective Soul, The Cure, as well as New Girl Now by Honeymoon Suite, and What's Up by 4 Non Blondes.
Sadly no live announcer. Would have been nice to get background info on these versions. Were they actually on albums, or one off's. Do the bands ever do these versions live in concert, ect.
What I am saying is I really enjoyed the program.
Not sure if this plays on any other Corus stations across Canada, but check it out for something completely different.

My only beef is the title of "musicologist." What is a musicologist exactly? Is there a post secondary course that must be completed and test passed ? Do you have to complete an internship ? If Alan Cross is a musicologist, what about John Donabie, David Marsden, old friend Ivar Hamilton, and so many others ?

A friend of mine works for the Rogers TV community channel here in our area.
He told me that he and all other full time employees working the station have been offered voluntary buyouts, and they were very generous. He has been there more than 20 years and the offer was for 2 years salary. In most cases it is one year and you have to fight like hell to get more, but anyway.
I wonder if this is the first sign that the Rogers community channels will soon disappear.

So I don't want to come across an an old cranky fart who always says I remember when....but I am so here goes.
I alway thought that back in the 70's and 80's in top 40 format it was a great during a break to have the jock actually read a live spot. Breaks up the cluster and seemed to make it all more a part of the show, as opposed to overly produced repetitive spots.
Of course that might be difficult now with so many shows voice tracked, and many of todays untalented announcers unable to actually read a 15 or 30 live.
SOWNY » TV News: To Tease Or Not To Tease? That Is The Question » January 22, 2023 5:19 pm
Speaking of teases, while working for a CTV station, the Executive Producer had a simple formula for writing.
It was simple.."make a statement, and then make a promise."
For example, "..snow is on the way tonight. Coming up, we will tell you how much in your area, and when."
This formula is still used quite frequently, and although it might be effective, it certainly gets very repetitive.
SOWNY » TV News: To Tease Or Not To Tease? That Is The Question » January 22, 2023 2:59 pm
I have noticed lately that on many nights CFTO actually leads with what is in essence a promo for a later story.
Intro rolls, video rolls, and anchor begins reading a 15 second or so voice over, ending with.."we will have that for you in just a minute..but first....
At that point intro their first full story.
Is this done intentionally, or perhaps the story they are teasing is not ready yet. I am not sure.

So I was the MC at a golf tournament years ago, and Johnny Bower was one of the special guests. After the round and prior to dinner I was doing my thing at the mic and was told that dinner would delayed.
Had to fill time and was interviewing Johnny so I asked him about the song. Then I asked him if we could sing it. Johnny was great, he agreed. Luckily, and I don't know why but I knew all the words. So that is one of the hilites of my career, singing Honky the Christmas Goose with one of the greatest Leafs of all time. Actually have about 15 seconds of video of it somewhere.
BTW, Johnny was great.
