I remember an episode of TJLS with Bobcat Goldthwaite playing the son of the bus station's owner, where he's having a problem leaving the room. John's character says in a despondent tone of voice - "It's a PUSH...".

There are episodes posted on YouTube but are in very low 240 quality.

Until Mint Mobile arrives, depending on your cellphone use and data requirements, you might want to check out Chatr.

I've been with them since they were Mobilicity. For 42.00 bucks a month I get unlimited calls and texts Canada wide and 6G high speed data, then unlimited slower speed. We recently got wifi, so it's pretty terrific now.

There are reasonably priced plans with a lot more data coverage, and the service (Chatr is owned by Rogers) is okay with few dropped calls. Don't work for them, but they're cheap and good.

idea for a show segment on Newstalk 1010 and GNR am640: a dedicated interview time and/or roundtable each week with a couple of tech experts to discuss what we can do to protect against computer hacks etc. when using wifi, how the pandemic and computer use is affecting kids and adults, cool apps that are fun and useful, listeners could text questions, even go old school and do calls.

It would also be fantastic if all our radio stations could please give a mention that the Toronto Zoo has a wonderful initiative going to save the gorillas by having people mail their old cellphones to the zoo to raise funds and awareness. 🦍📱🖖😁

The note about the Zoo accepting cell phones for recycling piqued my interest. I couldn't find any related information on the Zoo's site, but a Google search served the purpose;

I remember hearing "This is CityTV - Channel '79' - Cable '7'". I remember hearing "CFTO TV - Channel '9' - Cable '8', and "Channel '5', in Toronto - Cable '6'", being spoken by the various voices of local TV stations when I lived in Toronto. I didn't even subscribe to cable for the longest time as I had excellent reception of most everything on both sides of the border, but the practice dates back to when there was multiple cable companies serving viewers within the perimeter of the Toronto OTA coverage. Those like Keeble Cable, York, Scarboro, and Maclean Hunter (mentioning only those that are long gone) all placed Toronto stations on the same cable channel as the other one(s) did.

However - I have no recollection of any TV station outside of those in Toronto, as-in stations in Kitchener, Hamiton,  Barrie, and Buffalo, that told their viewers they were one channel off-air and a different channel (when being viewed) on cable.

Or am I miss-remembering?

I have to believe that sort of thing stopped ages ago when stations in Toronto (at least) were being provided to viewers in other coverage areas, and for certain were NOT on the same cable channels as they were on in the GTA.

So, I have a question. Why can't stations these days just identify themselves by their call letters (referring to a different post regarding call letters in general)? To me at least, I think it would make life for everyone a whole lot simpler and easier than it is now with all of the number conversions/transistions/translations, or whatever it's being called. Not overly well stated but I hope you understand what it is I mean.

Now I know STBs only ever had numeric readouts. I know too that TV remote controls only have numbered entries for station selection short of up/down search buttons. It just seems to me that the problem of keeping track of "who's on first (before Channel 1 was eliminated) and what's on second" could have been addressed as a (real) problem, and that should have been look

Thanks 'Radioactive' - tried that using CCleaner (which I use on a regular basis) to no avail. I clicked on the closed padlock symbol that comes up and it basically says the site is insecure. None of my desktop browsers work.

I did manage to view the site's offerings using my Android phone and saw that their cheapest service is the same as what we currently subscribe to as provided by VMedia - and we've been using them for 3 years now. We have 6 (really 4) DOWN and 0.8 (really 0.5) UP,  on a dry DSL loop. We can stream Netflix, Prime, and YouTube without issue at less at ~ 4.2 so why pay for more?

Now- back to the original subject.....

Sadly, no. Bell TV is the only choice you have, unless you want Rogers Ignite TV.

You can go the IPTV route, but if you do that, you're still giving money to Bell or Rogers for good quality internet.
THAT
Or the internet you choose is most likely renting lines from Bell or Rogers anyway.  (something like that...)

There are options available for TV service other than Bell which are IP based.  Keep in mind that Canadian regulations require licensed TV providers to operate on a closed network so in most cases, you will need to switch your Internet to the same provider as well as they can only use a DSL or Cable Internet connection to deliver service.

However, there are a few providers such as SkyChoice who operate their own private wireless and/or fiber networks in certain areas which enables TV to be provided without having to use a big telecom conglomerate's line or being forced to get Internet as well but having both TV and Internet will get you the best deal.  You can take a look at their packages and browse the channel lineup on their website.

One of the nice things with SkyTV is that it offers lots of radio stations across Canada including almost all of the GTA ones, something most of the other smaller providers don't even offer.

Is anyone else receiving a "403 Forbidden" notice when clicking on the Skychoice.ca links provided? I have tried all my browsers and checked my current IP to be correct (and not via a VPN).

It’s purely by coincidence my time of posting and the actual date of release, but is there anyone reading this post that stood outside of Sam the Record Man’s store on Yonge Street in 1969, waiting to buy Iron Butterfly’s third album – Ball?

My friend John and I did.

To the point of my subject title – while we were in line, one of the store’s employees came out and began telling everyone that they would in fact be able to buy the album but it was being sold in a plain white cardboard sleeve. The reason being given was that the printed artwork covers were delayed in being delivered to the company producing the actual vinyl records - I think to a facility in Scarborough. The actual release date for the record could not be changed so it was a white cover or nothing. We were told that we would need to come back at a later date and show proof of purchase in order to receive the proper cover. I don’t remember how they said they would notify us – the music consumers.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/33/IronButterflyBall.jpg

I specifically looked Wikipedia link , but found no reference to this one incident of a rock album being released in a white only cover/sleeve, except (obviously) for the Beatles White album, which was done on purpose.

I used to line up as well for Sam’s Boxing Day sales, for a period of time – and always the Yonge Street store, as I took the bus down Dufferin then the streetcar along Dundas. I didn’t live in the burbs near any plazas where Sam had other stores. Side note: when was the last time you heard anyone use the term “plaza”?

I went to the Iron Butterfly concert at Massey Hall. The Turtles were the opening act and I clearly remember that during instrument setup a cymbal ( I think) fell over and damaged the light box the Butterfly was going to use as part of their show. That's what my brian tells me I remember anyways [img]ht

'KK' made me laugh too. At the time of her beginning at 97.7, when Y108 was a rock station (of sorts) in Burlington, you could call that station's main number and be greeted with "Good (whatever) -  Y108". Kristie would call them, while live on-air, and respond to the greeting with - "Exactly?"

I spent hundreds of dollars buying imports and bootlegs from The Record Peddler when they were at 115 Queen Street East, just past The Electric Circus and before they moved up to Carlton. I used to buy the "Hot Wacks" magazine/bootleg catalogue to look at the prices others were paying (or asking) for the collectibles that were available.

My take on this is, there would be no going it alone for Ontario because of the ties between the Toronto, Montreal, and New York Stock Exchanges. None of them would want any other one to have a 1 hour advantage for 1/2 the year, and unless all three are onboard it won't happen. The rest of the eastern seaboard states and what they do or don't do would, I think, hardly factor-in to any decision..

My dad bought me a Zenith radio from McTamney's (spelling =?) pawn brokers on Church Street.
It had a geared-down tuning mechanism for 'fine' tuning of your favourite station. I used to listen to it at night, in the summertime, in the Kawarthas, picking up stations like Boston's WBZ @ 1030 ('cause 1050 CHUM wasn't booming in as it once did further south), along with ALL sorts of American stations.

I've subscribed to their lowest level internet service for the last two years - DSL6.

Connection speed is up to 6 Mbps (DOWN) / 800 Kbps (UP) - neither of which you will ever achieve) - but you don't need it - and that comes with UNLIMITED download. This - on a Dry ADSL connection (*).

I have NEVER had any issues with PRIME, CRAVE, NETFLIX, or YouTube video streaming, all in their 1080 HD modes. No buffering whatsoever. I'd recommend it to anyone who would not be overtaxing its limited download speed by  having multiple devices (kids) all watching different streaming services simultaneously. It's the cheapest internet service I have found and personally have no need for anything better.

(*)  "DRY ADSL" = (A.synchrous D.igital S.ubscriver L.ine)  -  means a faster download speed vs. slower upload speed, using an analog Bell line that has no dial tone.

So if you have long ago cancelled your old Bell home phone line, 1-pair, of the (normally) 2-pair, analog phone wires still in existence between your house and the pole/underground, is activated, but only carries a digital signal (NO dial tone).

I once upon a time had LOOK TV as well. I had an their antenna (which when installed damaged my roof) pointed at the CN Tower.

When I cancelled because they never received their applied-for license to be able to provide promised internet service, I had to return the equipment to their office location in Milton. I got a receipt for the return of the 'boxes' only after demanding one be issued, but later on they tried to chase after me wanting me to pay them for what they claimed were the unreturned devices. I had to go back to Milton and show them the receipt they issued because they refused to believe my claim (by phone call) that I had brought their crap back to them. They did NOT want the antenna - only the 'boxes'.

Too right! I just specifically did a search for a couple that have showed up when I was looking for just the song itself.

Here are reaction video search results for;
Led Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times and Rush's YYZ.Out of shear curiosity I watched a couple of minutes each.

On a similar thought tangent, a few years back, my grandson started watching other kids' posting videos of themselves playing video games. To me, at least, this was the equivalent of watching your brother playing a game and he wouldn't let you play along with him. I asked him why he was watching videos like that and he really didn't have an answer other than his friends were doing it too. In analogy, their dads were likely watching people (professionals) on TV playing football and not playing it with their kids. That sort of thing has been around for a very long time. It kinda makes sense that TV execs made the jump in thought that by now, 'we' would be willing to watch professional actors watch other TV shows.

Oh Covid-19, take me now!
