It's been picked up by NBC. Time to see if eOne can sell Nurses to anyone major. I'm surprised no one's taken the linear rights to Cardinal. It's been Hulu-only.

Instead of reruns of old games, why not air scripted programming? Last month, I read about a Taiwanese sports channel replacing their cancelled games with a basketball animated series from Japan. That show was dubbed in English, in Toronto, no less. I'm not sure Bell or Rogers would go for that and there aren't tonnes of modern sports dramas, but it's an angle that wouldn't result in mindboggling rerun blackouts.

You're not really comparing apples to apples. The Canadian figures Numeries releases for free are weekly charts that combine both live viewership and 7 days of DVR viewing. The U.S. figures you used are live + same day. Live events typically do poorly in DVR viewership (people watch as they happen), while scripted shows flourish.

Once you factor in the same amount of DVR viewership in the United States, The Good Doctor was also seen by more people than The Voice. The latter does seem to be disproportionately unpopular here. That can be somewhat explained by its broadcast on a second-tier network, though it might also be hurt by the fact that it is a U.S. competition show. There is no local angle. Last year's NBA Finals did poorly down south because one of the teams was in a market in a different country.

Ignoring that this facility isn't actually in Toronto, I always wonder long term about this. Much of these production spaces are going to foreign companies that are here because of the exchange rate and any government funding they can milk. What happens if you get a government that decides to axe that? What happens when the exchange rate goes the other way?

I think things would be worse than the early 2010s because our local broadcasters have been decimated. Enjoy the good times while they're here.

There is no reason to watch this in a world of infinite choice. It's not uncommon to think these award ceremonies are just multimillionaires patting each other on the back while trying to shame the proletariat into supporting their political causes. If you somehow do care, why watch it live and deal with commercials or long acceptance speeches when you can just find what you want online almost immediately?

I will say, the discourse around Parasite has been fun. I've seen a lot of snobbish elitism about how America is filled with uncultured swines who won't watch a foreign movie - a sentiment the film's director even shared. Yet, the U.S. is that movie's largest international market and the only dub of it you can get here is a French one. I'm sure moviegoing audiences will appreciate the condescension.

There will presumably be a level of subscriptions needed for a service to be required to produce Cancon. Dinsey+ will likely qualify. I'm intrigued by how they're going to deal with that. There is little on the service that isn't entirely produced in the U.S. and Disney has an appalling track record of running Canadian businesses. Which government will get millions swindled by the rat this time?

The TV Grim Reaper seems pretty confident that the show is dead and I don't disagree. Anything beyond Live+3 numbers are almost worthless for ad-supported TV, so it's a bad sign the producers are hawking those digits.

Clearly this is a result of the rise of Trumpism and we should be afraid of their success here. Don't worry, the nouveau moral majority is here to shame those that watch these films.
https://i.imgur.com/5npKfhS.png

Since so many of these movies are made in Canada and receive tax credits, does that mean Canada is funding fascist propaganda? CNN previously detailed how Paw Patrol and Thomas the Tank Engine (both of which are animated in Toronto) are also fascist propaganda. We have a severe problem here.

Journalism would be better respected if people like this (who are trolls in the most positive of light, or insane in the more realistic light) weren't given a platform for clicks.

Are things really that bad at Postmedia that they have to rely on the free Numeris data? I'm sure subscribers have a more accurate gauge of how things are doing post-Coach's Corner. Viewership dropoff during live sports can be difficult to judge because so much of it is context related (if the game turns into a blowout, people tend to leave), but comparing the audience retention of Coach's Corner to what's replaced it doesn't seem like an impossible task.

This is owned by a studio that has no proprietary streaming service. Exclusive rights to catalog titles isn't something that usually happens. That's usually the domain of new releases or evergreen hits (which tend to be sitcoms).

My question was and is, "why?"

CBC needs content. Some of the most popular Canadian TV shows are local versions of foreign formats. Traveling talent competitions were too expensive for our market back when linear was booming. Survivor: Nunavut might be too depressing and expensive to produce. Game shows it is.

Canadian film is entirely irrelevant to audiences outside of Quebec. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens to Canadian television with the decline of linear viewing. We're apparently a "post national" country, so our governments shouldn't be fighting against that. If there is no "Canadian," then we should be fine with shows that are shot here, but pretend to be in the U.S.

The free Numeris numbers are total viewers and live+7 days of DVR viewership. Putting that up against live+same day Neilsen data is comparing apples to oranges.

Advertisers don't really care about the +7 data, which is why Numeris gives it away for free. Most DVR viewers skip commercials.

You've got to be talking reruns, because I can't think of a channel that does this. The Bell and Corus specialties all premiere their first-run Cancon in primetime. I'm not sure Rogers produces programming for non-Sportsnet specialty TV anymore.

OTA has seen a major resurgence in the U.S. since the digital switchover. That hasn't happened here because all of our broadcasters have shrunk their OTA footprint dramatically and no one's taken advantage of the sub-channel concept. Some do that because they're vertically integrated with pay-TV providers who don't want to diminish the value of their paid services. The others are public broadcasters who only want to serve parts of the public.
