You are both welcome. The story fascinated me in that such a large operation existed in that area some 80+ years ago. Few today probably know that it was there. When you look at how quickly is was built and put into operation, I think it showcases the "get it done" mind set of the time. We seem to have lost that ability. Consider the LRT project that now runs right by that site.
That video was awesome. I grew up nearby and knew about the history of the area. When my parents moved in back in 1955 we purchased a Frigidaire refrigerator that was made by GE in the same plant. It was still in use back in 1990, solid as a rock. I have friends who worked for GM at that location making pickup trucks and later vans as well until all that was moved to Oshawa. My mother could have been a candidate to work there in those days if she wasn't already employed by Famous Players downtown while my dad was in the RCAF. Thanks for sharing it!

| SOWNY » Sportsnet Vs. Fox Sports: Whose World Series Coverage Is Better? » October 26, 2025 7:44 pm |
Fox coverage minimized the use of the on screen batting box that shows where the pitch was over the plate and how fast. They only used it during replays for what I saw, keeping the live action old school and leaving the viewer to see it as if they were live and not challenging the Ump's calls with technology.
Meanwhile, Sportsnet uses the same on screen tool for every pitch. I guess Sportsnet thinks Canadian fans are newbies and need something like that on screen all the time, but it did remind me of (coincidentally) Fox sports constant use of the glowing puck (1997-1998) that Canadian fans used to laugh at, thinking that US audiences didn't have the hockey mojo and needed the silly thing to follow the play. .
And another thing I noticed with the audio. I listen to the games with a Dolby 5.1 surround sound system and the Sportsnet mix was excellent. When I switched to Fox, the middle speaker with the commentary vanished so I heard the announcers from the side and effect speakers as if it was in the background. When I switch to stereo it picked up the commentary perfectly. This was also a problem with the CBLT Hockey Night In Canada feeds for years and only changed in recent times. My research revealed it had to to do with some of the station's audio gear not being up to date. I was surprised to see Fox / CITY's feed having that problem as the US sources are almost always great with 5.1.

I went to lots of concerts there in the '70s, Argos games dating to the Joe Thiesmann era and dozens of Jays games in the 80s. I remember walking by it and reminiscing about the place following a convention next door in Fall 1999 and the next day they blew it up! The explosive demolition was unannounced because they didn't want a crowd, but I would have paid to watch. ![]()

I guess there's nothing wrong with being a homer if you're an announcer employed by a pro sports team, but you could at least acknowledge when an opponent does something amazing in a playoff game. You may have heard the replay of WFAN's Yankee play-by-play announcers calling Vladimir Guerrero's epic grand slam during Sunday's game at the Rogers Centre.
Needless to say, it sounded like they were reading the phone book. It's become something of another wedge for Toronto fans, who often feel the swaggering Yankees are too big for their britches.
If you missed this epic call, you can hear it here. Just try not to fall asleep.
Yankees Radio Call of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Grand Slam Hilarious Unless You’re From NY
The Toronto Star has a small column about what the NY media and selected celebrities had to say about the game 1 drubbing and it was even better reading it this morning knowing that they were thumped again in game 2. Sadly, there's no sign of a column on the same for game 2.

Worse still the ads promise that their casinos (all in Ontario) offer the highest win rates.
That's just utter fraud.
There is no such thing as highest win rate and if there were do you think any casino would offer that?
Why doesn't someone launch a class action lawsuit against this fraud?
Or for that matter ban all gambling ads.
Those ads are all over Hockey Night In Canada too, on on-screen animations and virtually on the ice. I've heard they have lots and lots of complaints.
| SOWNY » The Untold Story Behind Lightfoot's "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald" » October 2, 2025 11:55 am |
RadioActive wrote:
Almost everybody knows the classic "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," the legendary 6 minute-plus song from Canada's Gordon Lightfoot. It may be the most unusual tune to ever reach Billboard's Top 10, with no hook, no chorus and a very long running time.
…
An author named James Bacon has written a book on the sinking of the ship, but also devotes two chapters to the making of the Lightfoot song, which - if anything - is even more interesting than the wreck itself.
According to a great excerpt published in Rolling Stone, Lightfoot was never completely satisfied with the song and tried to record it multiple times. But it was never quite there. With time running out on his recording studio time, his engineer urged him to give that "shipwreck song" a try.
With his backing musicians there, he reluctantly agreed but didn't like any of the takes. But here's where it gets really unusual - his back-up band had never heard the song before and were told to ad lib their parts as it went on and on. They did several takes but the perfectionist Lightfoot didn't care for any of them and each take was worse than the last.
"On Friday they played it again three or four times, [drummer Barry] Keane says, “but we never got it as good. The first time we played it the day before, there was that creative tension. Gord was putting his heart and soul into it. You can hear it. The other guys felt the same tension, because we’d never heard the song, and nobody wanted to screw it up. And that tension led to some good stuff. We weren’t thinking. We all just played what we felt...
When they played back the various takes, they reached a surprising consensus: The first take on Thursday was their best. “That’s it,” they said. “That’s the one.”
It's a very long read with a very long RS intro, but it's a fascinating look at how a Canadian classic was born.

I thought there were laws against advertising products of dubious efficacy but I've seen all kinds of them, mostly when watching FX or some lesser watched channel. Those ads are always bad. I've even heard them on 1010. Aside from that, I wish they would outlaw any Video ad that substitutes the voices & dialogue of adults with the voices (real or AI generated) of young children. It's a guaranteed mute button. There's an ad with hockey players that I've never got half way through because it's so annoying. It was probably inspired by the Kars4Kids ad.

Wow. I'm glad I don't have the old Ignite system. I LOVE my Rogers Xfinity service
____
My mistake, I have Xfinity but started with Ignite Nothing changed from when I had Ignite, just the branding.
No new equipment, no new software, no new on screen features. They are the same thing. The rebranding to Xfinity occurred in 2024 as part of a licensing agreement with Comcast.
The reaction time for FF and rewind is ridiculously slow as an example and when it's finished, it displays a completely useless overlay that obstructs the image and gives information the viewer already knows. That should toggle on / off because it's an annoyance. But it's not limited to that.

What kills me about this is (if it's available through the usual telecoms like Rogers or Bell), it will likely be piped through a bottom shelf, technically stunted box like Rogers Ignite, no matter how expensive and advanced the new TV set is. I'm finding that out after 3 years of Rogers Ignite that the remote and box they supplied is the poorest user experience I've encountered. Talk about gradual enshittification, I had one previously that had a HDD that I kept alive for extra years by installing a new hard drive and the performance, menu layout and remote were excellent. I 'upgraded' to Ignite and everything about it is lesser than it's predecessor, except for the streaming capabilities that are not in-house but on an external server somewhere. This little box does what my high-end TV was built to do but now the TV is just a slave to a piece of substandard cheap technology supplied by Rogers that I can't override.
My expensive TV is just a glorified monitor attached to a poorly designed rental box. What a waste of a good TV.

According to this Ad Week article, this is the 'second-highest-rated Q2 in network history'.
"Fox News averaged 2.633 million total primetime viewers and 304,000 Adults 25-54 viewers in Q2 2025. During total day, Fox News had 1.632 million total viewers and 202,000 demo viewers."
So 'most watched' is a big number in cable but cable is not a big number compared to the vast US market.
