The National four head format introduced in November 2017 was a flop...  and re-vamped in 2020...   still lacking... so, what does CBC do? Spend more money, to revamp, and re-invent a wheel yet again...

Ian Hanomansing should have been the sole choice to succeed Mansbridge when he retired in 2017.

Still strange why Global Kingston gets two local news, weather, sportscasts per day but their station in Ottawa only gets a feed of Toronto and no local newscasts.

Because CKWS is the only TV station in Kingston and they're funded in part by Shaw's community TV fund. It will be interesting to see what CKWS's future is if the Rogers deal is approved and they lose that money.

Starting a new TV station in Ottawa in 2022 is a non-starter. Global gets to add the market's ratings for its national sales rates without the expense of a local operation.

Global would not be starting a new local station. They already have a studio, bureau, some staff and  a channel on the dial.  So they have much of the expense already.  All Global needs to do is a couple of local newscasts, and could utilize what is already there augmented with new staff.

Global will always be an "also ran" in the ratings for news and public affairs programming until they have something more permanent out of Ottawa.  Local news in Ottawa would mean better ratings and mix of national and local advertising.  This works in other markets and a affluent underserved local television market like Ottawa is no different. The station in fact could be quite successful and not at a huge additional cost.

Much smaller communities like Regina can support three local television newscasts, no reason at all why Ottawa cannot either.

Hey P1...   You do realize that Global never had a local licence in Ottawa / Hull ???   The original Ottawa facility was a two camera studio in the National Press Building on Sparks St.  This was the Global Ottawa bureau for many years, but only housed Reporters, Producers, Writers and technical field and operations technicians to staff and service the Ottawa News Bureau.

Other than news, Global Ottawa never had its own programming, sales, marketing, traffic or MCR facilities...  Its purpose was to p

New cabinet, new ministries, new faces, returning faces...  all will be known sometime this summer....

There will be a lot of analysis about the Ontario election results, but there's only one candidate that I know of who had an extensive broadcasting background - and he finished dead last of the three major parties in his riding. Jason Farr was a longtime disc jockey on CKOC, among other places, before entering a career in politics as a city councillor.

He ran as a Liberal in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and came in last. He was up against another very well known name in the city - former CFL-er Neil Lumsden, who was elected as a Conservative.

Maybe The Grand has an opening...

No need to worry too much about Mr. Farr....  he is still the Hamilton City Councillor  for Ward 2.  He had previously stated that he would forego collecting his councillor pay from the City of Hamilton during the election period...  His nomination for the Hamilton East riding was official on April 19th,  He also stated that he would still be attending Hamilton City Committee and Council meetings for the purpose of voting on key reports and motions during the provincial election.

During the April 18th media event with Liberal Leader Del Duca, Farr also stated that he would not commit to  running for re-election as Hamilton's Ward 2 councillor candidate in October's upcoming municipal election.

So, Farr can start collecting his Hamilton councillor's pay packet as of today June 3rd.  And I'm sure that he will quickly contemplate the future and register soon as a Ward 2 councillor in the Hammer...

Besides,  politics (albeit municpal) probably pays better than a radio gig on The Grand.....

Does anyone know if Rogers was clear about their plans for CHEX (or CKWS for that matter)?

Rogers will not own them. They will continue to be owned by CORUS.

Yes but Corus will in effect be owned by Rogers, no?

CORUS Entertainment was created as an arms length corporate entity by the Shaw family leading up to the acquisition of some of the former WIC assets in 2000.  CanWest and Shaw basically split the WIC assets, with CanWest acquiring the conventional TV outlets operating in BC, Alberta and Ontario (CHCH) as well as some specialty channels. Shaw held the former WIC/WestComm radio holdings, StarChoice dth satellite, Cancom and some of the other specialty channels not acquired by CanWest.

Shaw anticipated that the CRTC would require that their portion of the WIC assets would have to be operated as a separate holding/corporation from the families' cable tv property "Shaw Cable".  This is why CORUS was created, but it was shares were held by members of the Shaw family.  Later, the CRTC announced that it was not their requirement or planned policy, that Shaw create a separate arms length corporation for ownership and operation of the WIC properties.

Jump ahead to 2010 when Shaw acquired to the CanWest holdings out of bankruptcy, Shaw continued to operate CORUS as a separate corporation Shaw Cable and the new entity Shaw Media.

In 2016, Shaw then transferred Shaw Media (Global Television) to CORUS....  but, the Shaw family members continued to hold the large majority of the class A voting shares of the two corporations.

As stated before, the consumption of Shaw by Rogers is for Shaw's largely western Canada cable TV properties and the Shaw Satellite dth service.  Corus Entertainment (Radio, Global TV, and specialty channels) is not part of the Rogers acquisition of Shaw Cable.

Out of all those broadcasters, only CFTO is still at that location, though the address was later changed to 9 Channel Nine Court.

Another famous radio address that is long gone is the CBC. However, if I’m not mistaken, they were not at the same location as CBLT back then? I may be thinking of CBC in another city.

I have often wondered how CFTO ended up in what at the time was the middle of nowhere. When they first set up shop in Agincourt, it was tough to get to, far away from everything, and they didn't have the advantage of satellites or a downtown HQ at 299 Queen St. W.

Was it the amount of land they needed or the cheaper cost that led to the site? Either way, it's still a long way out.

And then there's Global's Don Mills studios. I've been there and it's quite literally in the middle of a neighbourhood. You've got all these residential houses, a strip plaza or two and then all of sudden, from out of nowhere, a gigantic TV station. It's probably the last place I would have expected to find something like that. But there it remains, all these years later.

I came across an old article from March 2001 from Playback concerning CFTO TV's 40th anniversary.  It says that 20 acres were purchased out in Agincourt for a little over $132,000 to construct the original facility that included three studios. They must have eventually bought more land since other stories and wiki have it that the CFTO facilities sit on about 32 acres.  CFTO has had three or four additions to the original building and facilities over the years.

Also interesting for the evening news CFTO clobbered everyone back in 2001. Average minute during the 6pm news CFTO had 331,000 viewers, Global who was second 188,000, City tv 97,000 and CBC 93,000.  CFTO had an average total viewership of 403,000 for their 6pm news package.  I wonder what the ratings look like now?
