At the end of the article in the print edition of the Star today, there's a note about a book-launch event being held on May 5 with Idsinga and the Star's Kevin Donovan. So that would be why they're just doing an article about the book now (the press release having only been about him becoming a commentator on 640 and Global).

Fun fact re the Multitude, from Wikipedia:
"Many of the musicians in the ensemble were regulars at Sigma Sound Studios . . . . Those musicians became, as MFSB, the backbone of Philadelphia soul, working with producers Gamble and Huff, and Thom Bell, and artists such as The O'Jays, Billy Paul, The Stylistics, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes."

Nice to see how well Canadian artists were represented on that CFRW chart. And even now, "The Circle Game" would still count as Canadian content for a different reason, because it was written by Joni Mitchell.

That was a second vocal version, using revised lyrics to go with the instrumental being called "The Horse". Here's the original A side, "Love Is All Right".

Hard to prove, but some say it's the only top 10 hit - was No. 2 - where the credited person, as opposed to something like the Archies, doesn't actually appear on the track. (It was a B-side, instrumental version by his backing group of the A-side)

There is also the case of All American boy by Bobby Bare which was originally credited to Bill Parsons. Not sure of the chart position though.

It also peaked at #2. I had noticed that it was on Sirius' list, and in my opinion it shouldn't be since the real artist was far from being a one-hit wonder. I've seen a lot of one-hit wonder lists over the years, and I don't ever recall seeing this song included on one before.

I had read about the rationale for skill-testing questions many years ago, so I did a search and found the following article that confirms what I had recalled.
Why do Canadian contests require a skill-testing question?

George Baker Selection (who were from the Netherlands) did have a second North American hit in 1975-76 with "Paloma Blanca". It reached #26 on Billboard and #5 on CHUM.

#22 Bang-Shang-A-Lang
#53 Feelin' So Good
#1 Sugar, Sugar
#10 Jingle Jangle
#40 Who's Your Baby?
#57 Sunshine

Fascinating information - a CHUM country DJ intros Elvis in Toronto. I never would have guessed. I wonder if the plans were in the works at the time for the Top 40 switch.

I wondered the same thing. Also, because many of Elvis' early singles had done very well on the country charts, I'm guessing that King was the best choice that CHUM had at that point to MC the shows.

The De Tupelo a Memphis website has some relevant info about this which I'll excerpt below. The DJ who introduced Elvis, Josh King, was the host of a country music show on CHUM.

[b]CHUM Radio, through the disc jockeys invited listeners to send in their reasons for wanting a date with Elvis, it was a sort of contest .Everything was party and The best entries would win the chance to meet Elvis backstage . Photographs were sold, etc.
But it was not all positive as an anti-Elvis club in Tennessee tried unsuccessfully to convince Toronto DJs to stop playing Presley records. Security was paramount and a large security force of ninety-five officers was assembled in Toronto, the largest security force ever provided to be in the arena during the show. Several special "flying squads" were organized to go around the arena and stop trouble before it could start. They were ordered to eject anyone who got out of their seat. But the tricky part was to empty the arena quickly during the first show so that at 9.00 pm the second show could take place. The funniest thing would be the mystery that Elvis' arrival in the City offered, since when April 2 dawned in Toronto, the headline of the "Toronto Daily Star" wondered. "Where is Presley! He can't be reached. The paper could not find out how Elvis would get to the city, let alone where he would be staying.
No one knew it was a secret or at least no one leaked that information so Elvis could arrive quietly without harassment. It was only known that at 06:00 p.m. Elvis would have to be at Maple Leaf Gardens for his performance, but Elvis had already arrived and was sleeping in a room on the fifth floor of the King Edward Hotel. The secrecy was short-lived, though, because the hotel secretaries gathered to head to his room, where a pair of bodyguards politely blocked their way. The show is about to start and local disc jockey Josh King takes the stage to introduce Elvis , the crowd

I had actually thought about mentioning "December 1963" as another song that was a hit twice for the same artist in two different versions. But in this case the second version was a remix of the first, and that aspect of it didn't involve the original artist; it was done by Dutch DJ and producer Ben Liebrand. The original went to #1 in 1976, and the remix reached #14 in 1994.

I think that Sedaka reaching the top 10 twice with two completely different versions of the same song is the most remarkable single instance of an artist doing this. However, Tommy Edwards made the top 40 on Billboard three times with very different versions of his hits "It's All In The Game" (1951, 1958), "The Morning Side of The Mountain" (1951, 1959), and "Please, Mr. Sun" (1952, 1959). Of course the originals of all three songs predate the CHUM Chart, but there is another instance of this kind of feat occurring during the CHUM Chart era: The Ventures with "Walk-Don't Run" and "Walk-Don't Run '64". Also noteworthy is that on Billboard, the two versions had almost the same chart peaks as what Sedaka achieved; The Ventures' original got to #2 in 1960, and their remake reached #8 in 1964.

I wasn't listening to CHUM-FM in 1973/74 and so I don't know if they, or Marsden specifically, might have been the first to play Rush locally ... it certainly wouldn't surprise me. But for what it's worth, the first that I heard Rush on the radio was when "In The Mood" from their first album got airplay on CKOC. It was released as a single in December 1974, so that means that they would have been playing it by early 1975.

This reminded me of when Nancy Walker had significant roles on both McMillan & Wife and Rhoda, because I thought at the time that this was quite noteworthy. From her Wikipedia entry:

When the MTM spinoff series Rhoda premiered in 1974, Walker was a regular cast member in 41 episodes.

From 1971 to 1976, she was a regular on the successful Rock Hudson detective series McMillan & Wife, playing the McMillans' housekeeper, Mildred. During the first two years of Rhoda, Walker was not featured every week, so she was able to shuttle back and forth between the CBS sitcom and the NBC detective series. These two roles brought her seven Emmy Award nominations.

not really the same product

As someone who used to work in market research, I complete agree. Metro and Food Basics have much more in common than The Keg and Swiss Chalet do, and from what I've read about supermarket customers becoming increasingly price-sensitive in general, I think Walter's comment is correct as well. In addition, it could well be the same ad agency coming up with both marketing campaigns. I don't think that any similarity between them is a problem at all.

I remember listening to CHUM's show in the early 1970s and it was on Wednesday nights, as shown on the image below from the March 6, 1971 chart (with credit to Doug Thompson and his wonderful CHUM Tribute Site). But CHUM stopped doing their show at some point and I started listening to CKOC's, which I think aired on Wednesday nights as well. Eventually CHUM did bring their show back, but aired it on Saturday mornings instead.

Since I was born in 1960, I don't have firsthand memories of what was making the CHUM Chart in 1966-67. However, many years ago I had been curious about whether "Double Shot Of My Baby's Love" had charted on CHUM, and when I looked it up in The CHUM Chart Book I found that it wasn't listed. Just checked the listings for The Rolling Stones, and "Let's Spend The Night Together" isn't shown either.

From Google AI:
A baseball pitcher is limited to two pickoff attempts (or other "disengagements" from the rubber) per plate appearance before a penalty is called. If a third disengagement is attempted without recording an out, it results in an automatic balk, and any baserunners advance one base. The limit resets if a runner advances during the plate appearance.
