SOWNY » Will Somebody Please Give CFRB's Robert Turner His Own Show? » September 3, 2021 10:07 am

My take on Robert Turner having his own show, from what I've heard him say about it listening to him over the years. Even though getting up to go work in the middle of the night is no fun, he has made it work for himself. Maybe a one or two hour show on the weekend on his passions of Wrestling and Action Figures. I miss the Early Edition, especially when Dave Agar would sit in with Robert. Dave's decades of journalism experience and his views on the stories of the day were always worth getting up early for.. It worked well when Russ Courtney sat in with Robert, but once Robert was on his own it felt like he would run clips from CTV National News and give his view of the story, which he now does with John Moore throughout his show. I've not been impressed with Knia Singh since I first heard him on The Gerry Agar show as a guest a few years back. Gerry asked him why BLM didn't speak out on the issue of much of the violent crime in Toronto involved mostly young Black males, mainly  gang members.shooting/killing each other. Mr. Singh's response was 'BLM' only speaks out on issues that are important to them.' That left Gerry speechless for a moment or two. Mr. Singh also made the comment ' There are no Black racists'. That had Gerrys jaw flapping. And left me speechless. I wonder what Mr.Singhs view on vaccines would be if all Federal,Provincial Municipal courts mandated that all officers of the courts must be vaccinated or they can't appear in the courts.Hit him in the pocketbook and and see if that changes his view on the matter Would he need to get a fully vaccinated lawyer to represent him in court to file documents to fight that law?..

I've noticed the same lack of ads when I'm watching something on CBC Gem. The screen says we'll be back after this commercial break, (or something to that effect ). And of course the screen turns red. I've always used the commercial  breaks to go and take care of a few chores, but I'm surprised that they don't  show the same commercials  on their web streaming that are being seen via OTA or for those getting their programs  by cable.

Thanks RA for another site to give more program options to view shows and movies. One more reason I won't need cable. I may be an exception to the rule for tubi. I've had no issues  watching any the programs or movies on tubi without A VPN. I'm a bit surprised, as I'm using a 10 year old desktop running on Windows 7.

The Art Shoppe moved to Kincourt Street near Caledonia and Eglinton West when they left their Yonge Street location. A bit north of Commisso's bakery. Just south of the waste transfer on Ingram Drive. If the breeze is from the north, it's a lovely fragrance for the folks that go to the new location for the first time. Doubt it will be the highlight of their shopping experience. It's been 3 or four years since I've passed by there, so I couldn't  say how busy the place looks lately.

Does anyone know if any of the pundits that appear on round tables or otherwise  give their take on any given topic actually get paid for their time? CFRB seems to have more in house staff on the round tables than in years past. I would think their being on a round table would be just an expected duty they have to do as part of their job.

Spent  a fair bit time at that Harvey's location in the days when was Home of the Hot Ones. Pete the Greek, Dieter and many others. Sometimes the southbound  400, sometimes Pine Valley Drive. Somewhere in the garage is magazine from the late  '70 s included in the Toronto Star weekend edition called  The City. It had an article featuring  that Harvey's location where all the action was.The top brass at Harvey's corporate headquarters wasn't happy with that kind of publicly. In the early 80 s they began telling  anyone with a set of mag wheels to move along after new time limits were posted, and they began to enforce them. Spiro and Les were two of the guys I remember well. All a bunch of lively characters behind the counter.1050 Chum was a popular choice for the music.

I can't  understand sports fans that have an intense hate for another team.Over the years I've known fans that were in a quandary after a blockbuster trade that brought a number of top players from the team they hated so much. Now they must hate the former players from their home team that were traded, and cheer on the players from the other team they cursed with such anger.

Thank you AspectRatio. Knowing a bit more about Dave Cooper, and knowing Jim Richards sense of humour, it's no surprise that was the spin Dave put on it.I remember some years back, Jim told listeners of story involving issues he had with his access to water supply into his home. I don't recall all the details, but I believe it was a broken water pipe. An issue about a small easement on his neighbours property, that gave him no end of grief trying to solve the problem. He's  had many strange incidents in his life the gardening accident sounded plausible.

I was up a bit earlier than usual today, and turned on the radio to 1010 am to hear what Jim Richards was talking about in the last hour of his show. I didn't recognize  the voice of the host, but it definitely  wasn't Jimerbly. The guest host identified himself  as Dave Cooper, and said he would be in for Jim for the rest of the week. I've heard  his name mentioned, but I don't know much about him.He sounded good, seems like he knew what he was doing, and has a fair bit of experience in talk radio.Does anyone know what happened to Jim ? I hope it's not too serious, but it is keeping him off the air. Wishing him a quick recovery.

SOWNY » Have you had the Covid vaccine? » April 7, 2021 8:44 pm

Had my first shot of the AZ vaccine just over 2 weeks ago. My city Councillor sends out a weekly newsletter. A few weeks back, there was a link that showed all the pharmacy's in the ward that were offering the vaccine. Found one only a few blocks from home I'd not had any previous dealings with. Sent an email inquiring about getting the shot, not expecting a quick response. A few days later they called back, and I was able to book an appointment for few days after I received the call.. Not much of a wait once I arrived there. .A bit of soreness in my arm for a day or so. A bit a of a headache during the 15 minute wait time. They checked my blood pressure, all was fine. Waiting for round 2, hoping it's a bit sooner than the 4 month wait they are saying it will be for the next shot.

Thanks TomTV. That is something that should have occurred to me. I don't have (or want) a twitter account, but I could have gone in through the side door, so to speak. When I go to the GTA Update, I could type in her name when I check out another twitter account. I often look at Dave Agar's feed, as he has some interesting links to other stories. I'm thinking more of what Gail Smith was up to in the years between her departure from CFTO, until the times that social media came into being. She just seemed to vanish from the public eye after having such a high profile job on a news program that had such high ratings.

SOWNY » CFRB "News" » April 1, 2021 11:01 am

I heard the exchange between Mark Towhey and the other panelists. Numerous people talking over each other usually has me focusing on something else, or tuning out altogether. When I heard him say that to the others on the panel, I thought, don't you have a show on the weekend to refute anything others on the panel may say that you disagree with?
The 'good news' is,sounds like they have re-recorded the  promo for CFRB that sounded like it was done in an echo chamber. It sounds like the same person doing the voice, but it sounds closer to  what would be considered a normal sounding promo.

SOWNY » CFRB "News" » March 23, 2021 1:36 pm

Playing fast and loose with the facts, so they fit into the spectrum of his opinion? Or does he thinks his listeners only get their news of the world from his show, and nowhere else? Don't hear much lately about the high quality of the research teams they have behind all the hosts to get the "facts" correct.

Thanks for a bit reassurance that I didn't put my whole foot in my mouth.I do tend to over analyze things. It seems to be a family trait. I guess those in the business as long as John and Robert get to accept the fact that staff at the station they work at will come and go. Even those that have been there for many years.Maybe I should look for a job at one of those firms that analyze most anything there is to analyze .

SOWNY » The Way They Were: CFRB, CKO, CKEY, AM 640, CJCL, CJRT & The CN Tower » March 22, 2021 7:30 am

I had an interesting, and possibly embarrassing, experience calling in to CFRB on Friday morning. Shortly before 7 am, John Moore asked listeners to call in with their stories regarding the ease or difficulty of they were having arranging  their Covid-19 vaccine shot. Thanks to the weekly newsletter my local Councillor sends out, they provided a link to show which pharmacy's in the area were providing the shot, and I was able to book an appointment to get mine this week. I managed to get through, spoke to Robert, told him of my situation, and he said he would get me on air shortly. After I spoke of my situation on air, John paid me a very nice compliment, saying I had a very good voice for radio. I think I thanked him for the compliment, (  hope I did!
). I then went on to say how the 'voice of doom sound' (I've been told that my voice in the range similar to that of Lorne Greene/ John Vernon) seems to have gone out of style in this century, and the radio of today doesn't lean to that type of voice as much as in the past. For some reason
I asked if there were any openings for on air positions. John said  he didn't think there were any available, I then said 'I'm available for voice overs, or any imaging voice work, then we both said goodbye and the call ended. I felt a bit awkward afterwards, once I realized what I had said, weeks after the major purge of staff at Bell. I sent a text a bit later to apologize. I then offered to send my ( inherited) copy of Betty Kennedy's book, Dear Gerhard as a peace offering. John has mentioned Betty Kennedy in the past, and the books she has published. I'm wondering if I should send an email with a bit more of a detailed apology. As far as I understand the system, text messages pass by, and if they aren't picked from the list and saved, they are gone. As is often the case, I had that much later moment of regret, thinkin

Thanks for the memories some of those spots bring back! To the days where some of the ads were entertaining enough to keep me listening to the same station. I had  forgotten about Randy River stores until I heard those spots. Then I remembered a few times the wife would drag me into one of the stores, and try to convince me to put on some of the latest fashions!

SOWNY » New promo on CFRB done from an echo chamber? » March 17, 2021 10:51 am

The morning show has slowly gotten lonelier in the past several years. Ever since Dave Agar retired. No news person, or sports reporter, or anyone else to directly interact with. I quite enjoyed The Early Edition with Robert Turner when Dave Agar would be on the show. I respected him, and his decades of journalism experience he brought to the mornings on CFRB for all those years. Russ Courtney did sit in the other chair for a while, but I guess it wasn't to his ( or some of the upper level brass ) liking. After that it just seemed that Robert Tuner was cribbing a number of stories from the CTV National news. If the stories were an item that occurred the previous day and I had already done my daily 'info junky' session on the internet, there wasn't much new on the program. Robert seems to be the only person ( outside of the regulars on The Morning Brief or the several doctors and other experts, and the round table sessions ) that John has to directly interact with throughout the morning show. I guess that was the compensation for Robert after losing his early show.

There is an new promo for Newstalk 1010 I've heard in recent weeks. It isn't the regular voice  I've heard in recent years. It sounds as if it's done from someones home in a room that gives it a hollow/echo sound. I'm not sure if it runs throughout the day. I don't listen to the station much after Moore in the Morning, unless  the promo for one of the other shows has a topic that. sounds particularly interesting. Anyone have any inside knowledge on who this is, and why they would run something like this instead of the usual studio produced promo?
