Met him several times over the years.

First time 55 years ago - outside the dressing room door following an exhibition game in my home town. I was 11 - one of dozens of young boys waiting to shake his hand - pat him on the back & get an autograph. Mission accomplished. He couldn't have been more accommodating.

Fast forward a decade & we would cross paths again in a busy bar on a Saturday night He was there - alone. So my buddy - a former RCMP officer - & I struck up a conversation with him. Very friendly & half in the bag of course.

The bar was filled with lots of young ladies & as we spoke to him for maybe 15 minutes every so often & out of the blue an attractive young lass would come up and introduce herself to him. I'm betting their intentions were less than honourable! Trading on his name and good looks and personality there's no doubt that he had to beat them off with a stick for most of his life.

I always found Mr. Ballard to be entertaining.

I interacted with him only once and he was great to deal with - generous with his time.

My favourite story about Mr. Ballard centers around him dressing up as Santa Claus for a segment aired live between periods on a Leaf tv broadcast. Probably about Christmas of '76 or maybe '77. Dave Hodge was the host and I think Dick Beddoes may have also been present.

Anyway as you might expect there was lots of laughter as the three - but especially with Mr. Ballard in his Santa suit and Beddoes cutting up - talking about various people including the late sportscaster & writer Jim Hunt. When Hunt's name came up (and remember this is LIVE) Santa Ballard suggested the following -- "you should change the first letter of his last name from an H to a C".

And more laughter ensued.

As stated in the "parts company" newspaper article Burns was an American.

I believe Burns came to Canada to avoid the draft during the Vietnam war. One of a handful who ended up in broadcasting

Bob Karsten was another American who came north to avoid military service. Karsten anchored the CBC 11 p.m. television national newscast one night years back as a last minute fill-in. I had worked with him earlier in his career & was floored to see him at the anchor desk. I made a call to the CBC studios that night after he signed off and managed to reach him. Told him he had done a great job!

For many decades my overnight choice was WBZ Boston but that was then & this is now

I switch back & forth between WJR Detroit and WABC New York

Quite handy being at 760 and 770 on the dial - saves wear and tear on my old bones

While WJR is live satellite programing originating Dallas WABC features full time local host Frank Morano with weekend replacement host Curtis Sliwa. Both men are excellent at what they do IMO. Mr. Sliwa of Guardian Angels fame is a ball of energy who is the poster boy for the old phrase "gift of the gab."

A  female anchor on CTV news channel the other day was talking about the Canadian Junior Hockey team  member Joshua Roy.

Except that she anglicized his surname -- calling him Roy as in Roy Rogers

Pretty basic stuff

Disrespectful and un-Canadian

Listening to Vassy today & my ears perked up when at 1:20 p.m. this afternoon - when coming in off a break she said..."it's 20 minutes past the hour...".

A time check!!!

Nerds like me (and YOU) notice this kind of stuff right?

Evan in all his time on the show never did that to my knowledge.

Works for me!!

George Noory is a native of Detroit & has often said on his show that he was the last person to interview Jimmy Hoffa. I used to listen a lot more than I do now. Noory is a pretty smooth guy on the air.

I've heard some great stuff on occasion but lots & lots of crap too.

Just like any daily program it's a home run sometimes mixed in with lots strike outs along the way.

Canada beat Germany 11-2 last night at the World Junior Hockey Championships being held down east..

The Canadian Juniors were led by the remarkable Connor Bedard who counted 3 goals and 4 assists.

CTV News Channel decided they could improve upon that remarkable production with a headline this morning that read "Connor Bedard's 7 Goals Lead Canada..."

The interns are running the asylum

It took about ten minutes or so but the headline was corrected

Many of you know the recent story of Liberal cabinet minister Mary Ng. She was found guilty earlier this month of breaking ethics laws by awarding a federal government contract to a friend. That friend who accepted the contract is one Amanda Alvaro. She's the head of her own company called Pomp and Circumstance - a mouthpiece for the Trudeau Liberals. Ng was forced to apolgize in the house for her immoral actions. But I'm more interested in Ms. Alvaro.

Alvaro appeared today as part of the "power panel" on the Power & Politics program on CBC. That surprises me. She is directly tied to Minister Ng's lack of judgement/character yet her chair on the Power Panel doesn't appear to be in jeopardy. Alvaro has been a contributor on Power and Politics in the past. But I wonder why no one at CBC suggested she take a time out & some time off. Yet another case of a "lack of ethics" on full display? This time by CBC?

If you ask me the answer is a definite yes to both.

Listening to a couple of the Bell outlet radio stations around Ontario today and out pops a very familiar voice.

CJBK 1290 in London is offering a re-roll of the Evan Solomon Show over the noon hour.

Listening now as I type this.

Quickly checked Newstalk 1010 and CKLW in Windsor. to see if might have have been a chain wide programming decision but no...listeners in London with all the luck.

Totally unexpected but still a pretty good listen. I always liked Evan & this re-roll simply reinforces that.

Listening this morning to a female anchor (didn't catch her name) around 9.30 a.m. as she spoke about an upcoming GTA performance of that old Christmas favourite The Nutcracker.

Plenty of details including the names of the principal dancers & the Four Seasons Hotel venue & tickets available at Ticket Master etc. etc. etc.

What caught my ear was that she referenced the performance as "a ballot" as in a voting ballot instead of a ballet. Anyone can mispronounce things live so no big deal but lo and behold  20 seconds later she did it again calling the Nutcracker "a ballot".

All things considered can she really be that uninformed?

First off she is a pleasure to listen to.
I didn't hear every minute of the 4 programs she hosted in her debut week this week but I heard enough to remind myself to tune in the next day.

Vassy Kapelos of course took over from Evan Solomon and has done so with ease.
She keeps her program moving with plenty of guests with different perspectives. Makes for great listening.

And now that she is not employed by the CBC & her paycheque is no longer indirectly controlled by Trudeau I trust that she will have no hesitation in calling out Liberal dishonesty and missteps.

I highly recommend the new Vassy Kapelos radio program. It's entertaining and informative.

Can't wait 'til Monday.

He'll be on the air once again this Saturday at 1 p.m. as the Mustangs host the Queens Golden Gaels. The winner will lay claim to the Yates Cup. So there's that.

Mr. McConnell is such a football fan & expert that I would bet dollars to dog nuts that he'll continue with his football play-by-play duties on top of his new management portfolio.

Long time U.S. talk show host Jim Bohannon will sign off with his final radio show tonight, bringing to an end a near 30 year long late night talk show career.

Bohannon took over the late night radio spot from Larry King in 1993 when King went full time with CNN.

Bohannon, who is 78, had been off the air from long stretches recently due to unnamed health reasons.

A veteran of the Vietnam war, Jim Bohannon was always an enjoyable listen for me.

I will miss him.

Even though I knew this was coming it is still difficult

I listened to Bernie and Sid on their morning show on WABC for the last couple of years

As a team they were wonderful, a breath of fresh air in a city where 8 out of every 9 voters were Democrats.

They espoused their conservative talking points with wit & humour in a sea of left wing liberal NYC loons.

Thanks for the memories Bernie. Rest in peace

It was held at the Stardust that year so I walked down the strip and arrived at about 4 a.m.

They had a bunch of sailors in their whites handling the live audience making sure you didn't overstay your visit. You had to make a donation too if you wanted a seat. Makes sense.

Glad I went.

I'm spending much of my time on CBC Gem enjoying their 6 channel coverge of the Commonwealth games.

There's lots to enjoy. It's great. It really is.

The Canadian Olympc Committee is paying attention to our athletes performances too.

Here's a portion of their (COC) most recent press release from today...

"In the men's hammer throw Canadian Ethan Katzberg won silver with a powerful 76.36 throw.
Nick Millet of England took first place by just a tenth of a second (76.43)."

Summer replacement help? Good for a chuckle anyway

Anyone have any info on the reason for their self imposed demise?
