We got our first colour television, an Electrohome made in Kitchener I think, in the summer of 1972 so we could watch the Summit Series in September in colour.

Sign of the times.

Years ago I was watching CHCH News at 6 pm and they got their word graphics mixed up between a car crash in Thorold and the Bosnian civil war

The newscaster was talking about the civil war while an image of a car crashed into a tree appeared and then they talked about the car crash while an image of a tank rolling down a street with the caption 'Thorold last night'

Like 24 hour news channels, 24 hour sports channels need content, even if it means talking, and talking  about horse races or football games that are hours or even days away.

Professional newsreaders are alive and well at AM 740 and Classical 96.3.  Kudos to Jane Brown, Bob Kompsic,

Thank goodness there are some left.  And good hosts know how to talk TO the listener and not AT the listener.

It doesn't help when a corporation will have a single announcer read news for multiple cities/markets and it quickly becomes evident that the reader is not familiar with those markets.

After the Grey Cup we can await the biggest game in decades for the national men's soccer team when they host the USA at Tim Hortons Field on Jan 30!

Like radio stations, a newspaper's office was not only a place to work but essentially a standing 24/7 billboard/promotion of the that paper and closing them or moving them to a nondescript industrial part of town contributes to out of sight, out of mind.

If the ratings included the large and growing 60 plus demographic would AM 740 be in the top two along with 680 News?  Not all retirees are on limited incomes.  Many have good pensions or buyout cash with money to spend or are still working.

I'm told (somewhat accurately) Dick had an afternoon rock show at CHML that wasn't very popular.and was let go. But the station GM lined him up a job CKSL. On the way to London he tuned into CKLW and liked the sound of their news and decided to bypass London and go directly to Windsor to try to get a news job which he did.

I learned a long time ago you really can't predict weather with any accuracy more than 24 hours in advance.

The long range forecast is essentially an educated guess on what a system many miles to the west or south-west will do and what direction it will take based on computer models. You really can't predict weather with any reasonable accuracy more than 24 hours in advance.  A one or two degree shift can change everything. Regarding warm predictions, the opposite is also true.  Many times last winter the long range forecast had snow on days I was plannning to be driving and by the time the day arrived, the snow had either been taken out of the forecast, became light flurries or arrived a few days later. Not that I was complaining.
