Wow.  I had no idea he passed in 2018.  His obituary can be found here:

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/thornhill-on/russell-wells-9055670

What I didn't realize is that he was actually a trained broadcaster.  No wonder his spots were always listenable.

As for the creepy factor, I don't find it the least bit creepy.  Another example if actor Macdonald Carey, who played the patriarch on Days of Our Lives until his death in 1994.  His voice is still used in the opening of each show.

Does this mean they won't be using a delay so they can easily dump if they need to?

Does this mean they won't be running the dress-rehearsal concurrently a la SNL in case they need something do dump to?

In this day and age, they need to keep their asses covered.  The days of doing it "without a net" are long gone.  Especially in prime time.

If by chance they're not employing any of the above methods and something does go wrong, you can be sure there will enough folks recording it to make sure the special moments are preserved forever.

As for me, unless I'm in front of the TV and have nothing else to do, It won't be appointment viewing.  But I am curious how the Kevin Hart as Arnold thing will work.

A number of years ago, I built a corporate e-mail spam filter (people were complaining about getting 10 spams a day!  Oh No!) that employed a blacklist/whitelist for e-mail addresses.  Those terms were used in the e-mails that were sent to prospective e-mailers.  Took me a few hours to create.

Within a couple of weeks, I got a complaint from one of the higher-ups that the terms "blacklist" and "whitelist" were unacceptable and that I had to change it.  I did, but I made damn sure I took my sweet time doing it.  Easiest week I had.

And this is years before "woke" was a thing.

This is where listening to to the Levitt/Samfiru paid programming shows comes in handy.

Non-compete is a grey area.  Generally, an employer can't prevent someone from earning a living.  However, they can provide a continuance of their salary for period of time during which they are not allowed to work elsewhere.  In short, if they take another job, they lose the money.

Now, I say it's a grey area because many non-complete clauses don't stand up to a court of law and aren't enforceable.  However, if you're the (soon to be former) employer, having one (along with the threat of deep pockets when it comes to litigation) is always better than not having one at all.

To add to the list, long time CTV Kitchener evening news anchor Rosie Del Campo left rather suddenly with no explanation several months ago. (before Summer)  She still appeared on Promos and on the main banner of the website.  Then on November 22, she announced she was leaving to pursue other interests.

Any heavy song cranked up deserves heavy fines for driving and not being able to hear an ambulance coming down the road.
Long story short, people who drive with loud music are stupid.  Drive with a respectable level, but not loud music.

(I'm sorry, but I just had to)

What about those who crank up the music because of a profound hearing loss?

It is quite lawful to drive while deaf.  Isn't that why emergency vehicles have all those flashing lights?  Would you believe it's even not illegal (how's that for an awkward phrase) to wear headphones or earphones while driving?

The key is anything that can rob your attentiveness while driving is problematic.  That could be anything from distracting music or radio to that gorgeous pair of legs in the seat next to you.

Wow, thanks for that explanation. I have to admit I didn't watch the show much (school got in the way and it wasn't really aimed at my demo at the time) but I never knew that was how it worked. Of course, today there ARE no phone books, so I guess it really was a creature of its time.

My pleasure.  But being a little accordion-playing Polish Kid at the time, I was drawn to the show because I was enthralled to see Johnny Banaszak, accordionist with "The New Yorkers" polka band, and the guy who was inside Promo the Robot on Rocketship 7, play the accordion on air.  And that was no ordinary accordion, either.  It was a real "Cordovox".  Which was a really cool combination of accordion and organ.  But I digress.

Good thing I lived only 500 meters away from school.  I was still late more often than not.

Could be. It goes back a lot longer than my memory! But can you tell me what that meant? What was the count vs. the amount?

Yup.  It was "count and amount".

They would take the white pages out of the phone book and cut each column into little squares.  They would draw one of the squares from a large drum.

The count would be random number from either the top or or the bottom of the square.  So if today's count was 3 from the top, they would call the third name from the top of the square.

The amount was the amount of the jackpot, which would grow for each incorrect call until it was won.

The person called had to tell the host the count (which changed every day) and the amount.  (which changed every call)

With all that, I only remember Nolan Johannes as the host of the show.

After D4D, Johannes went on to do news in P.A.  He passed away in 2020.

Years ago, I bought a cute little battery operated atomic alarm clock at a surplus store.  All you had to do is set the time zone and it got the time from WWV.  I was only able to make it work by placing it outside for a few hours because there was just too much RF interference from all the electronic junk on my office to be able to get WWV.

Probably why I picked it up for a couple of bucks at a discount store.

But honestly, I've been using the "www.time.is" website (courtesy if IG in another thread) and absolutely love it.

Online streaming is no more like radio than intravenous feeding is like fine dining.

Can you elaborate on that?

Seems to me that if I can log into a stream and receive the same content as an over the air broadcast, then I'm listening to a radio broadcast.  No?

Granted, it was nice to listen to RCI on a short-wave set I had access to in France back in 1995 during the Bernardo trial.  But that was also a different time with different technology.

BBC, RCI, Radio Netherlands, DW, even Radio Moscow have all pulled the plug on SW years ago.  It seems the only ones left are smaller, religious broadcasters.

I'll second that.  I has totally forgotten about Albert & Sebastian as well but as soon as I heard those names murky images came into my mind along with a nice glass of partly-skimmed milk.

My personal fave on CHCH was "A Special Place" with Uncle Bill, Mr. Nickle and Penny.  Such a wonderfully innocent show.  Does anyone remember "Finder Reminder"?

Strangely enough, it wasn't until I became an adult that I developed an appreciated for Billy Van's Hilarious House of Frightenstein.  Thought it was rediculous when it first aired.

Never cared much for Mr. Dressup or the Friendly Giant in the Summer.  But when I was home sick during the school year, nothing would be better than getting cozy in front of the TV with Mr. Dressup and the Friendly Giant.

Mornings for me (except in the summer) belonged to Rocketship 7 with Dave Thomas, Mr. Beeper, Promo the Robot and the Sweetleys.

There many others too numerous to mention.  The one nice thing is that the cartoons that were shown on the programs that carried them were uncensored.  But that's a whole different argument for another thread on another day.

In a way it's much like what happened to radio.

There was a time when radio was full of 30 minute dramas and comedies.  Then came television.  Shows like Gunsmoke and even Green Acres started as Radio Shows.   It took a while for folks to adapt to the change in technology but radio found a way to adapt.  Likewise, traditional television is going through some changes.  For starters, I can't remember the last time I watched a program "live".  Sometimes it will be delayed by mere seconds but the point is I watch it on my schedule.

Remember when television shows were "sponsored by..."???   When was the last time you've seen that?

I just see this as a natural progression.  It will take a while for everything to shake down.

As long as people like yourself don't vote at all, they will keep winning and zero will change.   Sadly that "blue" party has voters who will vote blue if a monkey ran.   Not voting sends no message at all.    Even if you went in an spoiled your ballot or refused your ballot, then you are counted and a message is sent.     It would be better to be counted than not doing anything and expect any kind of change.   Just my 2 cents.

Have to agree with you Radiokid.  Regardless of your political stripe, how many times have we seen a riding that was won by just a handful of votes.  You can't tell me that there weren't at least that many people who could have swung it in the other direction.  They just couldn't be bothered.

Oh well.

I've always been a believer in the adage that if you didn't vote, you have no right to complain about the outcome.

Looks like Rogers is getting serious about squeezing everyone out of standard digital cable and into an Ignite package.  I'll have to admit in the two years we've been on Ignite it's been rock solid which is good because there are two of working at home.  It didn't start that way, though.  Even had to sick CCTS on them because of a billing issue they wouldn't do anything about.

They already won't sell new digital cable subs and are very reluctant to support older boxes.  I wouldn't be surprised to see the axe will fall on legacy digital cable sooner rather than later.

What on earth is CTV doing starting their coverage at 6:30?  I know the polls will soon be closed in Newfoundland but really, just how much filler do they have until numbers start coming in?

Which reminds me.  I was a deputy returning officer in a poll two elections ago.  I was stunned that the ballots are stilled counted by hand.  There's got to be a better way to do this.  I can just imagine the headaches if they changed to a ranked ballot and still counted by hand.

The whole comparison between ATSC 3.0 and colour broadcasting is missing an important point.

In North America, color broadcasting was often referred to as "compatible color" because black and white TV sets could still show the signal -- just not in color.  NTSC (which some refer to as Never Twice the Same Color) basically broadcast a black and white signal with color information piggy-backed onto it.  This standard was backed by NBC.  CBS had a different standard proposed which would require everyone to buy a new TV.  This is essentially what happened in the UK where black and white broadcasting continued until 1985.

The main advantage is people didn't have to replace their sets to at least watch the programming.  I remember sports commentators often using the phrase "for those watching in black and white" before describing the colors the players were wearing.  It also let the broadcasters (especially NBC) remind people of how wonderful this particular show is to watch "in living color".
