You can listen to CTV News Channel on the iHeart app. That’s something at least.

SOWNY » Why Is The CAB Running This Radio Campaign? » July 3, 2022 11:23 pm

They're lobbying for more support for Canadian produced content.  It's far too subtle. If no one here gets it the average listener won't either.

So, is this why the HLS streams hosted by Akamai for CBC News Network are no longer working?

Background:  There has always been non-official streams at different resolutions available to stream CBCNN without paying for CBC GEM's $5/month subscription.  However, the streams have stopped working for a few days now.

At least they say this new streaming channel is free (aka taxpeyer-funded).  I guess they learned the lesson from CNN+.

I haven't seen it written anywhere that it'll be taxpayer funded. News Network isn't.

Remember when they raffled off their record library a few decades ago? What an imbecile thing to do.

Unfortunately record libraries take up a lot of space and also need proper environmental controls if they are to be maintained properly and with digitization they're not really needed by most mainstream stations. Q isn't known for spinning old rarities but presumably they digitized anything rare.

BTW do stations maintain their own digital libraries these days or do they subscribe to a service?

Many stations buy a hard drive with the music pre-loaded from a service with storage being relatively cheap now.  There's a bigger demand for lossless audio and there are a couple of services that specialize in providing that.  I remember driving through Cobourg about 15 years ago and hearing low quality audio on one of the stations there that obviously came from a file sharing site or were dubbed from a steam.  It was the worst audio I have heard on a commercial radio station.  Hopefully no one is still doing that.

It'll be because City is receiving and then retransmitting the network feed of ABC where is Sportsnet IS the network feed of Sportsnet.  There would be an extra satellite delay on City.  Also, this strategy makes ense becayse 100 percent of people watching hockey tonight are seeing Rogers commercials, even those watching ABC.

100 percent of people who watched saw Rogers ads, possibly true, *except* for those of us who watched the Sportsnet YouTube channel Stanley Cup hockey game hosted by Steve Dangle 😏😁🏒🥂🍾👏👏👏

News isn't one job on that station like it is on a station with a 5 minute top of the hour newscast.  It's local, regional, provincial, national and international news, traffic, weather, sports, entertainment and business.

Their overnights are absolutely unlistenable, especially on weekends and they used to be just as strong as the other dayparts.

Interesting interview with a prof from Niagara University on CKTB's Tom McConnell Show Monday that fits this topic like, well, a hockey glove.

He's predicting, despite what anyone says, that when the NHL contract with Rogers is up, it won't be CTV that nabs the rights. It will be a streamer like Amazon.

He bases the guess on the fact that the latter has just secured the rights for Major League Soccer for the next decade, as reported here a few weeks ago - and that Amazon has shown repeatedly it's willing to vastly overpay for rights to an event or a league if it can get exclusivity from it, meaning you won't be able to see it without subscribing to their service.

He warns they also tend to look at long term deals, so if a streamer did try to nab rights to an entire sports league, it would likely be for an extended time period.

I can only imagine the cries of outrage from fans if that happened. It seems positively unCanadian not to have at least some hockey games on so-called free TV or at least on cable. But times are changing and this professor believes that's where the future lies.

Not saying he's right but it's an interesting thesis to consider.

And given the way the marketplace is leaning, it could happen.

Perhaps.  Or They might continue with ESPN.  It's one stop shopping.  You get digital with ESPN+, cable with ESPN and over the air on ABC.  In Canada, with spotty internet in much of the country a digital only deal won't make sense for years to come.  The negative publicity of rural Canadians having zero access to the national sport would be a national crisis and a publicity nightmare for the league..

No. Your opinion that people who have them are anti-life is incorrect and ill informed.
Go ask a woman what an ectopic pregnancy is.
Go ask a woman what a septic uterus is.
Go ask a woman what needs to happen if she has a miscarriage and it won’t come out.
These are not uncommon occurrences and in all three cases the mother will die without an abortion. Most of these states make no exception for these occurrences.

Oddly enough, I thought the exact same thing. This is a U.S. court ruling and other than perhaps spurring "abortion tourism," it only affects Americans. Not Canadians. It has no immediate or direct effect here and I don't think any politician willing to overturn those rights here can possibly win office in this country.

Still, the coverage about "can it happen here?" was pretty predictable. News producers always try to find a "local" angle, even if there isn't one.

SOWNY » All Eyes on Hockey? » June 24, 2022 12:26 am

I think the growth of ESPN+ is due in part to the price point.  It's $6.99 a month; less if you bundle it with Hulu or Disney+.

Compare that to $20 and $25 per month for our sports channels.  In Canada you have to be rich or willing to do something illegal to watch sports.

SOWNY » CBC Radio’s Mandate » June 23, 2022 1:34 am

I hope it’s okay to open a new thread not specifically about the CRTC decision but about the CBC’s mandate in general.
I have always thought that the job of the CBC should be to have something for everyone but not everything for everyone.
As a middle aged white guy they schedule shows I like for when I listen.
On the morning drive I have Metro Morning and the Current. On my lunch there’s Ontario Today. On the drive home it’s Here and Now, the World at Six and As It Happens.
On the weekend there’s Day 6, the House and Cross County Checkup.
If I need music or more news and talk there are places to get them on the radio in every city and town in Canada.
Now imagine you’re indigenous, or you’re gay, lesbian or trans in any community outside of Toronto. Where would you ever hear a radio show for you other than the CBC?
I don’t think the CBC was ever designed for 9 to 5 listening for any one person. It’s a patchwork of individual shows for different segments of the population.
If a show you like isn’t on when you want it, listen on demand on their app or download their shows as podcasts.  You can time shift everything nowadays.

Change can be good but can also backfire .. not Strombo's fault but the Strombo HNIC era was a disaster.

I have never heard him snivel once.

At one time he was the best in the business but his long winded nonsensical intros are tiring. I’m also bored with the panel discussions. They need to cycle through several people to keep it fresh and they need to give one person with a strong opinion a segment again. The current format is dull.

It's not entirely connected to the matter at hand, but I do enjoy how these morning show guys with massive egos dump on podcasters as wannabees and claim that terrestrial radio brings them legitimacy.  Then they get fired from terrestrial radio, start a podcast and say they would never go back even if they were asked.  If some giant merger happened and Corus had to sell off Edge 102 this summer and they were given the opportunity they'd be back in that chair at 5:30 am the day after Labor Day, and if any of them say otherwise they're full of it.

There's tension in the air at the annual Banff Media Festival in Alberta, as CBC and Canadian producers clash with the likes of Netflix and other streamers. It comes as the elephant in the room - Bill C-11, which would force more CanCon requirements onto the Internet-only American services on this side of the border - is working its way through the government.

Canadian Broadcasters, Who Are Up Schitt’s Creek Without Streaming Regulation, Fight Back at Tense Banff

Many experts, including two former CRTC members and another former Commissioner, and university law expert Michael Geist, are warning of the potentially dangerous implications of this bill in terms of regulating what Canadian users might be able to see - and worse, to say - online. But this week, in an unusual move, the government cut off all debate - and possible amendments - and forced the proposed law into the Senate.

If passed, it may forever change the way you see Netflix, YouTube and other American streaming services in this country.

The fly in the ointment of Bill C-11

More lousy writing.  The second article claims that the current Cancon quota on radio is 40 percent.  It isn't.  It's 35.
How do you write an entire article without double checking the most basic facts?  I didn't read past that point.  I prefer factual reporting.
