A great coach knows how to manipulate the best from their talent, A bad coach sits there resenting them, believing he should be playing not coaching.  I've known both.

Jon's one of the few managers / owners in this business who believe they can be as good on-air as their talent, turns on a mic. and proves it.   Those guys are awesome to work for, because they don't ask you to do something they know can't be done, and motivate you to a standard they believe you can hit, based on their past experience.

Without blowing sunshine, my current boss is one of those guys also.

(it tends to comes from programmers who have a history and love of programing and not EBITA, TRAM and is more concerned over that first quarter report to shareholders.  Not that those aren't important, but too many are promoted from the 'sales' end of the office which was always the antithesis of programing till a few years ago.)

It doesn't bother me, never has, and I completely understand it.

Professional 'broadcasters' quickly forget just how intimidating and unsettling 'broadcasting' can be.   I'd much rather have a caller who says 'how are you' or 'as I was saying' or 'long time caller..." than someone who just launches into it.  A caller who just launches into their point generally tends to be an unpaid co-host who's illustrating they get on-air far too often.  They're polished, get to the point, and know how to play the game.  They're my least favourite callers because I don't want or need someone on a phone line who I don't know hosting the show with me.

I always thought the 'ditto' response, unsurprisingly from Limburgh was a prick thing to do. As is 'get on with it' or any of the other responses.  I'm all for having fun with the callers at their expense, exposing them as lunatics, insane or just funny.  There's an unwritten agreement that they have chosen a seat in the front row at a comedy club, but not at that stage of the call.

See the real callers, not the groupies, even though they are completely prepared by the screener with their point,  hear the burst of static at the start of the call and find themselves 'on-air'.  A completely alien environment for them.  Especially the true 'long time listener, first time caller' crowd.  They've now become a part of the group they've listened to for years and it can be nerve wracking as hell.  So they reach for something to stabilise them..  buy them that split second to regroup and get their point across.  That reality check tends to be something they've comfortable with like 'how are you' or whatever.  It's only necessary for a few seconds, but they reach out and grab for whatever is closest before being 'live on the radio'.

Every host who bitches about 'how are you' and all the other crutches was obviously perfect and not nervous on their first time at the mic.  Otherwise they'd remember just how nerve wracking

I've obviously worked pretty intensively with both, and a couple of others that jump to mind, and know them as well off-air, possibly better, as I do their on-air personas and both are deeply kind, generous, caring guys.

I do agree with Geo, it's show business, and without question their understanding that gives them the career longevity they enjoy.  Not that they didn't or don't believe the message they were conveying, that's not for me to judge, but the off-air version certainly didn't always correlate with the on-air one.

Neither one was completely left, or completely right.  Talk radio always suggested 'taking a side and sticking with it' but these are both multi-dimensional professional communicators, and I'm glad they're free to be who they believe they are, rather than who we think they should be.   In many ways I think Michael especially was always working hard to find Michael, and I believe he finally did.

I'm very proud of both of 'em.

I've always said I'd gladly pay $5 a month for just the main pip of CP24.  I don't need, nor care about all the other stuff, but I'd love the idea of a 24 hour full size news channel.  Kind of like they do from 5-6 on CTV.

anyway, well done.  Great read.

What amazes me about the 1-800-GotJunk spot is the shitty job the producer did..  At one point the got junk person sounds surprised.. bordering on shock.. "So we helped you out???"  or something along those lines.  IMHO (Not H) the read is completely wrong and was missed.

And not before time!!  Have fun in Quebec.

-----------------8<------------------------

MONTREAL — Health officials in Quebec confirmed Monday they are revisiting the place of the grilled cheese sandwich on menus in care facilities following the choking deaths of at least two elderly residents in recent years.

A coroner concluded earlier this year that the sandwich appears to pose a particular choking risk to the elderly after two residents of the same St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., care home died in similar circumstances, three years apart.

Coroner Andre-H. Dandavino recommended that both the local health authority and the provincial Health Department review the risks associated with grilled cheese sandwiches following the deaths of Clemence Thibodeau in 2015 and Monique Leboeuf in 2012.

“The grilled cheese sandwich seems to be problematic and risky for the elderly,” he wrote in his report.

Thibodeau, who was 78, died in hospital the day after getting part of a sandwich stuck in her throat at the care home where she lived, the report said.

The woman, who suffered from a long list of health problems including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, as well as heart, kidney and breathing problems, had been previously evaluated and deemed able to swallow textured foods and eat on her own as long as she was supervised and the meal was cut up.

Leboeuf, for her part, began coughing and choking after eating a grilled cheese sandwich in Dec. 2012 and later stopped breathing, even though the obstruction was cleared.

Dandavino ruled it was “a violent death by asphyxia from a foreign body.”

I watched and enjoyed pretty much all of Frank's movies.  I also bought his biography.  I find him fascinating.  I'm not looking for Felini or Spielberg material, just something entertaining to watch on the Train.  I also enjoyed Kissed, Jesus of Montreal, Ginger Snaps, Meatballs, Wexford Plaza and Porkys' so you pretty much know my expectations.

The only problem I have with Frank, and it's a pretty common one with talent, is he reads his own press releases and takes them to heart.   I get the impression he surrounds himself with people who tell him what he believes he needs to hear, and that can sometimes allow otherwise smart people to make an ass of themselves.

I've also been a customer of Tommy's many times.  I agree, his schtick doesn't go over well here from time to time, but he truly does have a heart of gold.  I can think of quite a few times over the years that a tech. producer has gone down there with next to nothing to spend for a wedding, funeral, job interview or whatever and Tom made sure they were well taken care of.

He's a wonderfully kind and generous guy.

Despite all the bombast you hear on the radio, they have staff who really know their stuff.  The first time I walked in there looking for a suit, the gentleman serving me looked me up and down, reached into a rack and pulled out exactly what I was after.

I know the ads can be a turn-off, but they did their job.  They got my attention and got me to investigate them further only to discover it is actually a pretty decent shop.

That doesn't mean I like the ads.  But hey, a guy's gotta make a living, right?  It obviously works for them.

It's not that simple.

CC could certainly have made the local KFI shows available... but...  big but... (butt?)  A lot of commercials, promos, bumpers involve union talent, and that talent is only paid for a specific geographical area.  So it's not as simple as just geo-blocking 'some' parts of the show, you pretty much need to re-create the broadcast and edit, switch out etc. on the fly.  This also includes drops, news segments, guests etc.

I've had Canadian show guests ask me if I can ensure their interview isn't broadcast in the states, and I laugh and when I tell them It's easier to find someone else, 10 times out of 10 they agree it's not a huge deal.  But it doesn't mean they don't try.

With all the copyright shite nowadays nothing is simple.

I agree, it's easier to subscribe to a vpn for $4 a month and not worry about it.

RadioActive wrote:

I haven't listened to WBEN in ages, with the exception of Sandy Beach's 50th anniversary show a few months ago. But this kind of thing really drives me crazy. (And as I always say, it's not a very long drive!)

I sort of get the semi-coherent rationale that over-the-air music stations have to geoblock (sorry Geo!) their signals into Canada over rights agreements. Although I think that's pretty specious logic.

But locally produced talk shows which don't involve any copyrights? That's just insane. If they wanted to cut off Rush Limbaugh, OK, it's syndicated and he has his own deal. But Sandy Beach's or Tom Bauerle's efforts? The reasons simply confound me.

It was the same thing when Bill Carroll was on KFI in L.A. What, exactly, was the reason to not allow the world to hear his show if someone out of the country was interested? It was a locally originated show. Where are the rights issues?

Talk about taking the "world" out of the worldwide web...

(or Cornwall for that matter) Big in HD may be incentive enough for them, I'm sure with Queens they could come up with some creative uses for the sub channels, and at the absolute minimum, with 2 FM's in that market, it would be great CRTC hearing at-a-boy stuff for them.

Interesting idea. Fresh Hamilton would be a no-brainer; they could turn that on tomorrow. Big in Kingston is another matter -- who would pay for that? There's no incentive for Corus to otherwise turn on HD on that signal.
