It seems an odd channel for a concert, but they did it last year and now they're doing it again.

CNN has confirmed it will be airing Live Aid, a benefit concert for farmers and others, at 7 PM on September 26th. In addition to traditional stars like Willie Nelson, co-founder and Canadian legend Neil Young will also be performing at the event. Other guests include John Cougar Mellencamp and Dave Matthews.

More details here.

John and Dave are on the board of Farm Aid alongside Willie & Neil. There will be other guests earlier on the bill, this year it's Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff and Lucas Nelson(Willie's son). The musical highlight, as it is every year, will be Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds.

I still identify a lot more with the best rather than the worst on those CFNY charts bc at the time the mainstream had become very homogenized or some of those artists listed in the worst were simply over-exposed. In the 60's the mainstream as heard on top 40 could be anything from the Monkees to Paul Mauriat to Bubble Puppy.

In the doc they spoke about indie music and indie 45's. I dug up a few of the 45's I bought during that era and to me it was like going back to the late 60's when 45's were interesting. The doc spoke about indie labels and many of the singles below are on indie labels. Simple Minds is from 1979 on a label called Zoom . The Todd Rundgren record is actually a picture disc. I think I bought most of these bc I heard them on NY.

One other thing in the doc some point out that a man named Jim Fonger was the villain in the mainstreaming of the station in the late 80' but to be fair the producers give Jim a chance to present himself. I went through my tapes and I found clips from 1982ish where he is referenced or speaks. He was with the station for a while before the changes. You can hear that:

Jim Fonger

Been a while since I have played some of these and I had to dig out the Split Enz single from the sleeve and the A side was something called I See Red. A song that I had totally forgotten about. and thus the Doc has inspired a trip down memory lane for me. The single is on an indie label and was an import.

My Split Enz story - saw them at the Concert Hall in 79 or 80. I don't think I See Red was a si

The assessment here is wrong.   CBS's new 'editor-in-chief' (who, BTW, is not 'right wing') didn't spike the segment merely because it didn't include a White House reaction.  But instead because a show like 60 Minutes should have tried harder to get an interview with one of the architects of the foreign prison program.   The main reason it was shelved, according to Bari herself, was that there really wasn't anything new in there.   Even the investigative elements weren't done by CBS; they were part of a volunteer college project that was run by another journalism program, and that wasn't even new.   So, if there's nothing new here, why bother running it?   Did you watch it?    Considering the standards the show is meant to uphold, that segment felt more like something that was thrown together using Zoom and other people's work.

And can we please stop counting the revolutions per minute made in Murrow and Cronkite's respective graves already?!   That was a million years ago.  Both those men lamented the death of network news, long before they became history themselves.   This is also not news.

I understand your connection to CBS News and wish to defend it. But this has done enormous damage to its reputation and as noted previously, if they'd just let it run as scheduled, it would likely be forgotten by now. Instead, it's now a thing and will stay a thing for a while.

And despite your defence, Ms. Weiss has little experience in this area - certainly not enough to be policing a show like 60 Minutes - and it does appear she wasn't exactly hired for her long resume in television journalism and TV news.

First, who said I'm defending CBS News?   Or Bari Weiss?   All I'm saying is everyone here got it wrong.

The 60 Minutes piece was not up to snuff.   If they let it run as-is, CBS would have lowered its own bar just to please some idiots who think management was silencin

And I guess that's my point RA. Everyone from presidents to prime ministers and (likely) popes has dropped an F-bomb from time-to-time. I didn't see the need to make a big deal out of it 30 or so years ago and I certainly don't care much about it now. My other memory of that incident came the next morning, when I was listening to CFRA Ottawa and the sanctimonious twit who read the morning news did a commentary in which he decried the media (which I guess he decided he wasn't a part of, at least for that one day) and talked about how we undoubtedly all celebrated the chance to use a dirty word or two in our stories. I resisted the temptation to drive to the studio and kick him in the shins to hear what kind of language he might use in those circumstances.

Pope Bob is a White Sox fan. He's probably dropped an F bomb in the last month.

When someone in the media celebrates their 100th birthday generally people think Wow! That's terrific. But I had no idea he/she was still alive. There are several former stars who have or will soon reach the century mark. Eva Marie Saint is there now but will hit 101 on July 4. Dick Van Dyke will [hopefully] reach 100 this December. June Lockhart will hit triple digits in June. David Attenborough recently turned 99 and Mel Brookes reaches 99 in June. Others who still have a few years to go but are getting close include Tippi Hedron [95] Clint Eastwood [94] Leslie Caron, Angie Dickinson, Barbara Eden [93] and Willie Nelson, Carol Burnett [92] No idea if I will get that close. Probably not. I consume too much of all the Canada Food Guide wrong things and not enough of the right things.

TBF - Willie has consumed many, many things so you probably have a chance.

Having worked in television, firstly with a cable provider and then various channels, I have a problem with signal theft. You’re stealing, plan and simple, and there is no grey area. With the state of broadcasting these days, they need all the revenue they can get, so stop stealing from them or there will nothing left to steal!

There are some U.S. channels that the CRTC will not authorize to be available in Canada. If they were available, I would gladly pay for them. Since they aren't, I will watch them illegally and not feel guilty at all.

This is where I am. I pay full pop for every channel that Bell offers and have for years. Also pay for Netflix, Prime & F1TV. Tell me where I can watch snooker on any of those. I'd pay for it but it isn't offered.
