I'll buy that but I'm pretty sure I've heard Americans pluralize it as well.

Just witnessed another gem this morning (I might have a new drinking game lol):
While trying to explain that the term is called "Daylight Saving" (correct) versus "Daylight Savings" (incorrect), Mr. Perkins' explanation for this is because it's only one hour that's affected. Uhh, no; it's because "daylight" is an unquanttfiable and cannot be pluralized - much like "sky" versus "skies".
So while I applaud them for trying to correct the widely-misused phrase of "Daylight Savings", his reasoning was amateurish at best.

I guess some people don't wish to hear opposing views to broaden their horizons. This echo chamber world we seem to live in now services nobody.
But Alan's reaction makes me wonder - how many followers of Alan's would even read the National Post? I just don't see that part of the Venn Diagram being all that large.

I'm not expecting the result to be final on the night of so devoting an extended block of programming to something with no outcome makes little sense.
But I'm also okay with learning who won whatever sports title the next morning as it's highly unlikely I'm watching it live. Even if I do learn who won, it's instantly forgotten because, sports.

CTV has opted for the broadcast premiere of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a movie originally shown in theatres in 2016.
Global is also rolling out a premiere flick, “Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.” It was produced in 2017.
Both of these are available on streaming services commercial free. I don't see the draw for CTV/Global.

I don't think CKTB does this. They're practically sitting right on the U.S.' doorstep. And I know they come in very well across the border, because the late talk show host John Michael used to get a ton of calls from Buffalo and the Western New York area.
I know for a fact CKTB used to mention bridge crossing wait times (mostly during summer holidays and long weekends) but I can't recall them ever doing dual temperatures.

With a population of 40,000 - I wouldn't have expected Liechtenstein to have a public broadcaster. Regardless, I have always assumed public broadcasters in Europe were held in higher regard and deemed much more valuable by the populace than us North Americans.

I actually like the sound of the voice artists in these. I wonder who they? But the spots themselves are nauseating.
On TV, the Sunwing Flynancial advisor is played by the same woman who was half of the hipster couple in the Leon's spots from a couple years back: "Lay-onze". I imagine she would voice the radio spots as well, assuming they actually recorded radio spots and didn't just rip the tv audio.

SOWNY » I just saw my first Christmas ad, is that allowed so early? » October 26, 2024 8:36 am |
Arbitrary? I disagree - November 11 is a reasonable request in this country as Remembrance Day is still very much a thing. November 11 is far less important in the US so all bets are off with how early in the year Christmas adverts might hit the air in that country - and given how easy it is for us to access American programming, the spillover effect is unavoidable.

Back in those days, radio personalities were celebrities, and well-paid. Not like today's hungry hucksters, who'd promote the local drug dealer if there was buck in it. "Hi! I'm Bill Carroll for Wormy's House of Crack!"
True. There was also a much thicker wall between newspeople and endorsements. They were more or less forbidden as it might have jeopardized said newsperson's perceived impartiality. "I can't trust what that person says, they use Colgate", was a legitimate fear then.
SOWNY » Matlock Renewed By CBS After Only One Week » October 25, 2024 2:44 pm |
In the promos I've seen, the character is shown saying something to the effect of "My name is Matlock, like that TV show".
It's a clever way of separating the two and does two things; it establishes the show and character as its own entity, and lets the show runners do what they want with the character without besmirching the legacy of its forerunner.

One reason for their loss of listeners is that many automobile brands are no longer offering SXM in their vehicles. I recently bought a new car and I had to shop around for a brand that had SXM available. They all say it's an obsolete technology and people just stream over their phones.
My phone is on the kitchen wall. I would need a cord about 2000 miles long.
In 2024 you are the anomaly if you're phone-less or not using it for streaming something. Though I'm surprised to hear somebody call SXM "obsolete technology". I'll admit I hadn't given it much thought and I didn't quite think it was there yet...but if auto manufacturers aren't installing it, then obsolescence can't be far away.

SOWNY » Toronto's Most Listened To Morning Show? » October 23, 2024 9:48 am |
Two things come to mind and I've witnessed both:
1. Numbers can be sliced and diced any which way necessary to achieve a favourable ranking, with the public having no idea how the numbers have been configured. Granted, it's a small demo but being #1 among seven-foot tall, blonde, left-handed Scorpios born in 1984 is still a claim to being #1.
2. If this is online but not being promoted on the air, then I might also think it's a leftover remnant from a time when the claim was more genuine and nobody's told the "web guy" to remove it. More likely, the "web guy" was fired in 2021 and not replaced.

SOWNY » NT1010's Bizarre Taylor Swift Tickets Contest » October 22, 2024 1:56 pm |
It's way easier to track TSL through an app - the connection from an IP address can be and is measured. But yes, I can still leave the room and come back later, effectively logging the minutes without listening.
680News giving away tickets is an automatic given the TS shows are a Rogers presentation. Maybe Bell has surplus from CHUM/Virgin's allotment?
Both stations not quite being "the demo" is only on the surface. TS' demo has changed (read: grown up) - I recall hearing Oakley wondering aloud how much impact Swifties could have on the US election, essentially categorizing them all to be in the 'tween set.
Taylor's first album was released in 2006(!). A 12-year old Swiftie then is now a 30-year old Swiftie. For some reason, it feels like Taylor Swift is being treated as a new (and youth oriented) phenomenon when she clearly isn't.
