In answer to Radiowiz, in my EV, the TuneIn app "features" Canadian local and regional stations AM & FM on the "landing page".  So Canadian stations throughout the region, are pretty well represented.  But as noted in my first posting, signal loss (LTE dropouts) disrupts streamed stations in rural Ontario.

I'm about 1 year and 4 months into EV ownership.  The lack of AM is frustrating, only to the extent that Rogers and other team owners haven't stood up to Major League Baseball.  MLB imposes internet blackouts.  The games aren't streamed on CJCL 590 Toronto's Internet stream.  CBS sports is substituted.  So, on several instances, in the past few weeks, we have been unable to listen to the Blue Jays games.  The HD3 signal on 92.5 dies around Holland Marsh, so although we listen to CJCL on HD3 in the Toronto area, the signal barely reaches parts of Oakville or very far down the QEW.  So, the Toronto Blue Jays broadcasts will have a diminishing in-car audience.  Of course if Rogers implemented HD on CHFI (Master Antenna issues at CN Tower), the coverage would be much better.    I've taken various A.M. radios along, including a pretty good Sangean, and reception is impossible in a Tesla.
Last comment, there are many areas north of Barrie, to Collingwood where the cell service to the car is not reliable.  Same situation in Prince Edward County.  So streaming is hit & miss and very frustrating.  Case in point, listening to Blair and Barker on the CJCL Sportsnet feed hass been frustrating during road trips. You basically have to re-boot the TuneIn app, every time the cell coverage "dies".  That's my experience. Perhaps other EV owners would like to weigh in.

CBC has become increasingly irrelevant to my family.  For years I have questioned why some of the stories in "The World at 6" on radio, have been included in the line-up, or why I cannot go 15 minutes without hearing a story that seems to be mandated by some committee at CBC who are checking off the "woke/woken" boxes.  Many of these stories, to my mind, "bump" important "world" news stories.  Going forward, I guess that "World Report" and "The World at 6" will be less about international news, and more about checking the CRTC quotas.  I suspect that the CRTC will impose similar conditions on other Canadian networks sooner than later.  If I wanted to listen to indigenous music, I would seek it out, on one of many different streaming platforms.(some of them free) or tune to 106.5 Toronto.  But inclusion by CRTC fiat, makes CBC a really tough sell to me.   I don't want government or its regulatory agencies telling me what I should be listening to, or deciding "what's good for me" and by quotas, they pander to every minority group.  For the moment, there are other sources of content on Canadian over-the-air Radio and TV that provide programming that I choose to view or listen to.  And to be frank, much more of our pandemic viewing/listening has been to foreign streaming services, including content out of the UK, France and other countries that don't seem to have forced their broadcasters into (similar) quotas.   I wonder if anyone reading the big yellow board has had discussions with family members about their consumption of CBC programming?  In our family our daughter and son-in-law in their thirties find CBC irrelevant - and don't listen or watch, perhaps with the exception of a few hockey games.  Has anyone reading this, had a similar discussion with family members about their CBC tuning habits or whether they want to see/hear the programming that is being mandated by the CRTC?   Finally how will Canadians react?  I suspect they will simply tune elsewh

  • 1995: WSJZ Smooth Jazz 92.9

  • 1997: WLCE Alice@92.9 (Modern adult contemporary)

    • This format began on April 3, 1997, and was intended to challenge what was then WMJQ (now WTSS) with an edgier, slightly alternative-leaning sound.[5] WTIC-FM morning show (Gary) Craig and Company was syndicated to WLCE, and later WBUF, for its morning show. The format lasted two years.

I used to be the control room operator from time to time for Ray Sonin at CFRB - both shows down memory lane and calling all britons.  I remember he was a fairly short man, and he would carry very heavy boxes of 45's which had plastic handles,  He'd literally be bent over from the weight of the boxes.   Always as pleasant off the air as on the air...at least to me.  I can still hear his sign off - T T F N - Ta Ta For Now.  My recollection is that Walter Kanitz was heard on CKFM for a period of time.  I also "operated" that show.  But it was a long time ago, so perhaps Continental concert started on 'RB and moved over to CKFM at some point in time, or vice versa.

I thought it was OK.  They had footage which I have never seen on Sportsnet of Alec Manoah pitching at university and Vladdy G, as a small boy, taking the bat from his dad.  Commentators were “no worse” than Matty Devlin - in my humble opinion.  Very good production values, particularly of the disputed slide into home that was over-ruled.  Benefit of watching on AppleTV, was the lack of nauseating online gambling ads, and constant promos for gambling sites, disguised as updates or scoreboards.  Seems as if some nights, almost 50% of inventory has been sold to gambling sites, and their ads are repetitive,  How many times do you need to see aaron paul or gretzky hyping a gambling site.  And while we’re at it, the caveman crypto ad is pretty tiresome afther the 50th time it’s aired in a sporting event on TSN or Sportsnet.   Just sayin’

Just guessing, but Covid protocols have shaken up the broadcast arrangements for TV, and with Jamie Campbell undergoing treatment for cancer, I suspect that Caleb has been brought in as a "swing man" - for TV and Radio,  He was the swing man on TV  recently when Dan Shulman was not on the broadcast due to covid protocol, then he and Tabby had some time off to attend their kids' graduations.  Caleb was really good on Tuesday night, and provided a terrific description of a technical issue, on radio, very clear....he adds a lot to the broadcast.  I hope that the brain trust at Rogers, keeps him on the broadcast, because Ben runs out of commentary after an hour or so.

The TV Museum is truly a gem.  There are some items that are one of a kind.  The RCA "phantom" TV from the 1939 NY World's Fair is amazing.  So are some of the early TV's and I seem to recall a CBS Colour Wheel TV from the early 50's.  (the RCA system was adopted by the FCC).  I love the Philcos.  RCA Phantom and Philcos can be seen here:

I've recently noticed that many of the promos and on-air imaging for Sportsnet 590 CJCL and TV Sportsnet, has changed.   I'm now hearing a female voice.  Not sure if it is Danielle Michaud - who is on staff at Sportsnet TV, or someone else.
She sounds like a "younger" Evelyn Macko....back in the day.    Some of the reads are a little over the top.
But nice to hear another (female) voice....sports channels have been dominated by male imaging voices.
Anyone want to weigh in?

I watched "part" of the show over-the-air on WKBW.  The "best" part of the broadcast seemed to be the ads.  It seemed that William Mattar had produced some new spots for inclusion in the (local) WKBW broadcast (in the local avails).  The ads were funny, for example slot cars going off the track....and Mattar said "that's not good". and does his "hurt in a car, call William Mattar" tagline.  Another of his ads had a car go off the road - I think it was a scene from a movie....and he said, accidents are never good.  In fact he was poking fun at himself in one of the spots.  I don't think I've seen anything like that in lawyers' advertising here -

There were some other spots that were funny.  I will concede that the some of the national spots that ran on ABC were much better than the Oscars show.  Sometimes advertisers splurge on spots, for the big broadcast - not unlike the superbowl advertising.  It was refreshing to see "real" products advertised on ABC as opposed to the repetitive non-stop gambling websites that litter Canadian television.  My wife screams at the TV every time "Shae-Lynn Noyes" shows up on the split-screen during free-throws during Raptors games, where Ms. Noyes constantly hypes "Bet-99".  Can all of these betting and gaming sites be making money given the tonnage of their Canadian TV advertising....sorry for being off topic.   But the same Canadian betting site ad(s) over, and over and over again....it's mind numbing.

Actually it gets weirder than that.  In June 2007, or a little earlier than that, the "then" owners of CKFM changed their call sign to CFMX.  As you may recall after Moses Znaimer bought CFMX, he changed the call sign for toronto to CFMZ.  But the re-broad in Coburg had always been CFMX.  Talk about two stations having the same call sign at the same time?  This posed a problem for BBM at the time.  Eventually it was resolved and the CFMX call sign was re-assigned to Coburg 103.1 - which was considered by Industry Canada and the CRTC to be a separate broadcasting undertaking because of the split-feed commercial approval.  To the best of my knowledge CKFM returned to the CKFM call sign sometime in 2007 or 2008.  I'm not certain whether they even used the CFMX sign "on the air".   They were calling themselves MIX 999 at that time -  I'm not certain whether MIX 999 ever used the legal "CFMX" call sign on the hour back then.  Not a listener, so I have no recollection of their on-air ids.  Perhaps someone who collects top of the hour ids, has a recording from 2007/2008

On other news, Buck Martinez was on Sportsnet radio today - from Florida and he's still billed as a Blue Jays analyst.
There was a controversy last year - whether he was vaccinated and did not attend games at Rogers Centre.

Given that he's being billed as being on the broadcast team this year, will he be in the booth at Rogers Centre?  I was hoping that Dan Shulman would replace him - permanently.

Bring back Stan Beeman, the FBI counter intelligence officer who hunted Russians in "The Americans".  He'd give Mr. Ferolito an "education" on free speech.  Too bad Stan Beeman was a fictional character.  But there is a clear line between harmful propaganda and "free speech".   But America has become. a place where you can shout "fire" in a crowded theatre and get away with it, by using the First Amendment argument.

Thanks for posting that.  I always enjoyed Snyder - was up a lot of late nights studying and watching his show in the 1973-76 period. Too bad he was ahead of his time.  I often found the content "PVR worthy". But then, only a handful of us had VCRs towards the end of his run on NBC.  I can remember the Akroyd parodies...one of his best targets.

Wasn't his sign off something like "Good night from those of us on the late shift from Southern California"

Jumping ship, is probably not going to make economical sense, in 4 or 5 years for some stations on FCP.   The investment in a new transmitter room, new antenna, regulatory approvals is expesive and a long process.  And although FCP is one of the most expensive transmitting sites in N. America if not the world, - hey they charge tenants for each HD-2, HD-3 and HD-4 and SCMO carrier - no one else that I know of has done that….is a 2ndary site going to be any cheaper on an annual basis?  Almost all FCP stations have to protect other stations in various directions, so a “master antenna” approach, if it could be designed, won’t be cheap.  Since most stations are run by bean-counters, until their ratings and revenues drop precipitiously and someone can demostrate that it’s multipath related, don’t expect senior management to embrace a large multi-million dollar transmitter site investment.  IMHO

Board footera
