Why is anyone lamenting this useless program's demise?

Good lord, people, he's been reading wikipedia entries cribbed together from his son Tal on the show for years, and any original thoughts or takes from him ceased about five years ago.

Give it a rest.

(yes, I'm still alive, and living out west in Calgary)

And what happens to all the anchors like Dwight Drummond here? Do they lose their positions or sink into the background? A very strange decision and, while I'm no admirer of the CBC, this is one case where they may really be needed on a market-by-market basis. And this is how they choose to serve their viewers?

The local anchor here in Calgary, Andrew Brown, tweeted today that he's being reassigned to working this weekend. I suspect others will get shuffled around too, as well as  to radio and digital.

Thanks. It has been a while, hasn't it?

Kinda lost interest since, y'know, I left Ontario a couple years ago. If it is any consolation to any of you, Calgary radio is freaking horrible.

Shades of the price tags at Winners, or something like that. The price that nobody really pays, but maybe somebody will be fooled when they "only" pay S120/month instead.

Umm...

I’m just a nobody who never worked in radio or advertising, but holy cow. These ads on the Fan right now for the car show have three voices in them. The female voice, like the male voices, is trying to convey excitement and urgency.

I’m sorry but in my lay opinion she just sounds like she’s either unhinged, or freaking crazy.

Hey, it’s their dime. And I’m not a car show type, but it certainly doesn’t entice me to head down there.

That's rich.

Rogers gutted the multilingual news programming that made the Omni stations different, and now cries foul when Shaw, who has likely realized these stations are nothing but Rogers units regurgitating the same spew, decided there was little point, or viewership, in carriage.

Cry me a river.

Just another sexist, ageist, dumb, and played-out stereotype that someone spent thousands of dollars advertising.

Honest question on my part: does this approach still work these days?

The thing that always gets me is how pretentious these kinds of ads can sound.  Forced, too.

I'm a casual listener - never was in radio, and don't aspire to be, and yet I can hear this kind of nonsense. Why can't ad executives and whatnot?

I'm probably overthinking it.

And don't get me started on British accents for non-British brands. Or smiley delivery (I'm looking at you, traffic lady from the Rogers cluster in Toronto).

Could someone explain to me why so many car ads for Cadillacs, Volvos, and other higher-end vehicles seem to follow a structure something like this?

A younger woman reads the ad in a tone that attempts to sound sophisticated and seductive. It seems to crop up a lot.   Sometimes it works, and sounds coherent, and sometimes the reader fails miserably and it sounds, to put it nicely, laughable. I mention here specifically the Cadillac ad where the woman fails to properly enunciate the phrase "except compromise" to the point where upon a casual listen or two it sounds like "accept compromise" - particularly on an inferior AM signal.

I'm not blaming whoever read that, but whoever produced it instead.  Like everything in radio, advertising production seems in a perpetual race to the bottom.

Much ado about nothing.

He'll be fine. The man is paid to have opinions and say stuff that stirs the soup. Dig deep enough and I'm sure you'll find stuff that would even piss off fans of his beloved (and who can blame him) Saskatchewan Roughriders.

I'm disappointed that he's leaving Toronto, but happy to see another dumb kid from the prairies move up in the world.

He's mentioning a made-up and nonsensical brand name. Therefore, he's shilling.

Ask yourself this: if he was on TV, doing a similar thing, and CTV News Channel was part of the I Heart brand, wouldn't it look kinda silly?

Easy to say "don't listen", there Codger. If I had a freaking dime for every time someone said that to me here, especially in my more cantankerous past, I'd have... a lot of freaking dimes.

I just detest the brandification of everything in media these day. Urgh.

The buffoons in management that got the most trusted name in Canadian broadcast news, now apparently shilling for CFRB, to utter the freaking ridiculous phrase "An I Heart Radio Station", or said broadcaster for actually succumbing to such stupidity?

Andy, I'm hoping that they'll pack off Ms Chen (voice and style grating like a knife trying to cut through an empty beer can) somewhere within the CBC where harm to the listening public can be optimally minimized.

People like Mr Roe aren't the reason the show flounders and gets ignored by so many.

It hasn't been any good since Joe Côté hosted.
