I have unearthed some great audio from CKBB 950 in Barrie that I must share!

This is Brian Henderson, best known from his time at 1050 CHUM, talking about the wild and crazy days working in Barrie.

This aired in November 1994 as CKBB was about to be replaced by B101 FM.

Funny stuff! Please enjoy.

Sad to hear of David Craig's passing. He was one of my Broadcast Journalism teachers at Ryerson and I followed his career at 680 News and Classical FM. I really enjoyed him as a person and his newsroom professionalism. His in-class catch phrase, "time marches on" became a thing of dread as all of us journalism wannabes frantically tried to write our newscasts to deadline. R.I.P. Mr. Craig.

Thank you for posting this. Arthur Black and, "Basic Black" was a Saturday morning staple in our house in the 80s. We first enjoyed him as a featured guest on Fresh Air (with Bill and Cy) when he was based out of Thunder Bay. From there, we followed him as he moved first to Toronto and then out to British Columbia.
I met him once at a CBC openhouse when I was around 10 and it was a huge thrill.
My favourite Basic Black character was George St. John (Sinjin) Quimby "in London" and his crazy news of the world.  R.I.P. Arthur Black.

I remember when Jim was the morning guy on Rock 95 in Barrie. He used his real last name back then. He is such a good guy and has had a great radio career.

I am lucky to have worked with him for 3 of his 20 years (and counting) at Newstalk.

#ig. John Moore is my wake-up and Classical is our family friendly station in the kitchen.
#Kilgore - P-1 = loyal listeners who tune in for hours at a time and feel a given station is an extension of THEIR daily routine. P-1s offer radio brass a clear idea of what demo is listening and where they are tuning in from. Understaning P-1 listeners influences programming, sell ads and create revenue.

Classical is what we listen to at the breakfast table. We are almost at P1 status! My 6 and 9 year old constantly ask how it is that Jean Stilwell gets so much time off.

CHAY (Huron word for "Welcome") died the day Corus dumped the format, replacing it with Energy. I was on staff when this happened and I remember the execs showing us a research graph pointing to the need for an urban CHR format in the Simcoe/Muskoka/York Region marketplace. What a bunch of BS that was. The station has never recovered and I doubt it ever will. It's a shame because there are some great people working very hard up there.

I can't speak for people who are totally blind as I have about 15% vision but I imagine the tactics for getting work done are similar. I never really had much trouble with boards. Most of the time you only use maximum 4 pots and knobs during a shift and after awhile operating the board becomes instinctive.
I use(d) every visual aid technology available to me and back in the good old days of being on-air by myself, I would use them to magnify the logs so I could read them comfortably. I would often write out the order of songs on another piece of paper in larger font ahead of time. I also had to find a way to read liners and PSAs up close to my face without bumping the mic which I eventually figured out. It didn't look pretty... but it was radio, so if no one listening heard anything unusual, mission accomplished!

For me, anything that happened out of routine was a challenge (snow day cancellation listss come to mind) and if it was too much, I would often get another body in the room to help me sort it out.

These days I produce mainly pre-recorded material, so the spntaneity factor is greatly reduced. I'm not sad about that :-).

I hope that is helpful.

I'm a legally blind fella with limited sight and I am astounded at how totally blind people in the industry can manage so well - especially now that computers have eliminated a lot of the tactile aspects of being on-air. Speaking from my own experience, creating routine while learning to problem solve on the fly is key to success.

I am curious to hear IG's take on this is as he is an excellent and successful Producer who happens to have a visual impairment.

Dearest Michelle,

Between the dirty windows, your old house, the loud patio below and the frequent fires in your neighbourhood... You need to move and you need to move NOW! Your windows may be magic but they can only protect you and your sanity for so long. It's time to flee. I hear Don Cherry lives in a nice area, and he uses Magic "Windaz" too!

I'll get you Sandra Rinomato's number.

Yours warmly,

Concerned Vinyl Window (with a crank) Owner.

Interesting that Chuck Berry and Chuck Barris died at almost the same time. I remember an episode of WKRP where Dr. Johnny Fever read a stat that (paraphrasing) 60% of Americans think Chuck Berry is the host of "The Gong Show".

I thought the first CFRB studio was where the current Keg Mansion is. The old Massey place on Jarvis. I remember Dave Trafford broadcast from that location on his final "noon" show a few years ago as a tribute. Am I right?

Hi from 2 St. Clair!!  Yesterday the building was evacuated at 1 PM as we were told the power would likely be completely shut off on the affected grid.  I'm not sure if that actually happened but we have had power outages in the past and our generators have kicked in as they should.  We maintained a skeleton on-air staff through it all.  Between music harddrive, voice tracking and back-up CD's, both stations can withstand unusual situations for probably a day or so. Anything longer than that - I imagine - would become a bit more of an adventure. Also, it is my understanding that in a dire situation, our transmitter sites can be used as a master control.

I am getting a kick out of the Sears mattress ads that are running right now.  They are taking a swipe at Sleep Country.  The woman sounds remarkably like Christine Magee and they use the slogan, "There's no reason to buy a mattress anywhere else".   Go get 'em Sears!  I didn't even know you still had stores.
