Along this vein: a number of years ago Frank Magazine got a hold of and published a list compiled from CBC TV's various canned obits and their relative lengths - the angle of the story being essentially the longer the piece, the higher up the totem pole the individual was. IIRC Her Majesty topped the list at the time, as she likely would as well today.

That doesn't change the fact that your solution is to whine and cry every time there is an issue.

All the more reason to focus on debating the issues and not impugning the motives and character of those with whom you disagree.

The internet in 2020 is not the internet it was 1989. If you want to go live in 1989 you go right ahead, but I'm living in 2020.

The difficulty in taking a debate about issues and policies, and making it about the participants and their personalities, is compounded when the debate is as relatively anonymous as, for example, one on an online discussion board between virtual strangers.

It gets even harder when, rather than allow others to express their thoughts and motives in their own words, you ascribe a set to them based on your own thoughts on the matter, and then compound that with vapid and meaningless stock insults.

Sure, everyone's needs are different, but that doesn't grant an excuse to charge so much money for internet usage in the first place, and it shouldn't force the poor to have such limited access. (in their homes)

The "You're poor so you get this internet-You're rich so you get THAT internet..." behaviour has to stop.

Why? and how?

And why stop there? Why not legislate access to clothing, food, real estate, energy, automobiles, vacations, Leafs tickets.....everything to anyone who demonstrates a need, wrested from those who earned it / made it and handed to those could not / would not / did not. I wonder if that was ever tried anywhere....how did it work out?

One day last week a protest of some kind shut down the Bloor Viaduct at evening rush hour. AM640 reported it but also did not identify the group.

I expect that is not so much negligence or ignorance, but rather a policy not to offer free air to the group, whoever they are. Sort of like how live TV sports generally no longer show people who encroach onto the field, disrobed or otherwise.

Don't feed the birds unless you want them to keep coming back.

I haven't seen the ones you're talking about, so I can't comment. But they have to be better than the promos they used to run in the 80s. Every single one of them used the exact same breathless dire warning theme:

-Five ways to be sure your house is safe from a break-in!
-The only sure way to prevent an accident on the highway and what to do if you're in one!
-The three things you have in your kitchen right now that will kill your dog!
-Why your family may not be safe in the middle of the night and what could kill you in the dark unless you fix it!

These types of promos aired almost every day and went on so often, we started making fun of them. And it's my understanding that eventually, so did the newsroom employees at City because they were so hysterically over-the-top.

Anyone else remember this from one of the Buffalo stations back in the day:

"It's eleven o'clock. Do you know where your children are?"

The CBC does itself no favours whatsoever by providing a consistently extremely biased editorial slant to its news and current events coverage, across all formats, networks, platforms, languages and geographic locations nationwide.

I expect a great deal of the criticism (and critics) of the service are rooted in that downright laughable one-sidedness. It makes the "national broadcaster" argument very difficult to make when the entire oeuvre is directed at a distinct political segment of the country, to the almost complete ignorance of the rest.

The warnings made for some surreal moments at times. One aired just before the 4 PM news on CFRB. As soon as it finished, the regular programming cut back in, only to have David McKee repeat the exact same thing. About two minutes later, the same alert re-aired, interrupting the newscast. When it returned, they happened to be heading straight into the weather, complete with stinger, where the same information aired for a fourth time in less than five minutes!

I was listening to AM 640 and noticed a very similar occurrence, except in their case, the second interruption actually pre-empted everything the GNR Newsroom was saying about the tornado warning - all while the robot voice was actually saying "for further information, follow local broadcasts". Good advice, maybe they should take it.

I caught a few minutes of the Jim Richards piece this afternoon including this amusing bit: Jim closed with a caller and then noted, "we are getting a lot of calls from men, so here we go we have a woman, this is Joan (or another name I forget) calling: Joan, you are on the air. Joan: "Hi Jim, so my husband...."

Given that it has only been a couple of weeks since Stephen Barnes died piloting his plane, this had to have been in the works before that unfortunate event.

Incidentally, Cellino evidently did not get the septuple-eight phone number in the divorce - his number is 888-2020. Not sure if the Barnes firm got to keep 888-8888.

I think the real controversy is that Trump backed out of the debate simulcast on all US networks, so Biden's team figured they might as well do another town hall with a broadcaster they haven't done one with yet. Then Trump turns around and does the same thing, even though he was the one who backed out of the debate. They will both cut into each others ratings, and one could argue that people will be less informed than if they both participated in a debate.
NBC picking a different time is the least they could've done, it's less about scheduling it at the same time as ABC's, and more about why any broadcaster should reward someone for refusing to debate.
NBC deserves the heat.

Correction: Trump did not back out of the debate. The debate commission, after previously using "it is too late to change anything" as an explanation for refusing to change any of the parameters, unilaterally changed the parameters of the debate and declared it would be held "virtually". That is called moving the goalposts during the game. Trump made it perfectly clear that he was prepared to hold the debate as originally conceived. So effectively, the debate was cancelled, and an alternative was developed and offered without consultation of the participants, and this offer was declined.
