SOWNY » CFRB Is Doomed In The Ratings As Long As They Do This » June 2, 2023 5:01 pm

I started listening to CFRB about 25 years ago and what brought me to the station was that it provided all the information a person required for the day.  The hosts were insightful, intelligent and mostly tried to present balanced views.  People like Andy Barrie, Jane Hawtin, and, yes, John Oakley (at the time) come to mind.  The newsroom was just as well stacked with the likes of Dave Agar, Tayler Pharnaby, Dave Trafford and the blossoming Avery Haines.  They were flanked by Henry Shannon doing air traffic, Bill Stephenson/Dave Quinn on sports and the Weather Network.  I recall my favourite time to listen was around Noon when Tayler Pharnaby did his daily commentary.  There are still a few bright lights at CFRB but as the years pass the impacts of ongoing cost cuts has diluted content and the downward spiral continues.  Other influences like social media are not helping the cause.

Perhaps Reshmi Nair for the afternoon "The Rush" on 1010 can now have a permanent co-host in Tory?

That's about the only way the show could be any worse.  Nair, who can't let anybody speak for more than 10 words without interrupting, with Tory, who can spend 20 minutes saying nothing without taking a breath.

I heard Matt Gurney fill in a few days ago...really good.  In my view he should be made the permanent solo host of The Rush.

I feel it's a pretty lame contest.  First, you have to be the 10th caller to be a qualifier at each of the timeslots.  The winner is then chosen from the 4 qualifiers and is contacted at 6:10am the next morning.

I grew up London during the 70's and 80's.  Peter Garland was the morning man in the 80's - one of the finest in my opinion.

Rogers unable to switch customers to Bell, Telus, despite competing carrier offers

From my perspective, this was one of the shortcomings from Rogers - not keeping customers informed and also not having a way for customers to contract Rogers.  It would have been nice to know that they were trying to work with other carriers.

If businesses/consumers want to have transparency on the root cause of the outage, CRTC should be talking to the lead technical expert(s) at Rogers.   Anyone else (esp at the executive level) will spin the story to the point of dizziness.

As with all matters legal, the lawsuit will need to have a way to monetize damages and that these damages were mitigated.  That may be more easy for companies like Interac who can compare transaction volumes but for individuals it will be tougher, though not impossible.

I have a friend to works in IT and here's his thoughts which I found enlightening:
1.  The Rogers acquisition of Shaw should be off the table to provide more competition in the industry so that people are not forced to have all their eggs in one basket.  He went on to say comsumers should split their internet and cell services across companies.
2.  Because the internet is so critical to people's lives now, anytime there is an outage, it shouldn't be simply a matter of not being billed for the outage period.  There should be an outrageous penalty imposed to the service provider so that they do take immediate action to minimize the duration of the outage e.g. $1 rebate to the consumer for every minute the outage lasts.  Consumer are the last to be compensated when they experience issues with service delivery.  If you compare to banks (for example), you get dinged quite hard when you have an overdraft situation on your account.  His point was that companies can hit consumers quite hard, why not the other way around as well.
3.  Hold the Chief Information Officer (CIO) responsible for the communication to their customer base.  The general industry standard is to acknowledge an issue has occurred at the onset and then to provide hourly communication until the problem is resolved.  Of course, the media for communication (e.g. Twitter) would need to be published as part of the companies disaster recovery plan.
4.  Government work with all telcos to develop an agreement that when there is an outages, there is automation routing of the network traffic to other service providers (Bell and Telus in this case).  In addition, each telco should be mandated to have a fail-over system in place.
5.  Any company providing voice service over IP be mandated to have an alternate solution when their network be down to ensure services like 911 are still accessible.
5.  He urged everyone to contact the CRTC to take action on the above points.

I agree - one of the best.  I grew up idolizing the Montreal teams of the late 70's.  They were a remarkable group of players.  From that era, Yvan Cournoyer, Serge Savard, Larry Robinson, Bob Gainey, Ken Dryden and, of course Guy Lafleur had their jersey numbers retired.

I am not in the radio business but I've been wondering about this since NT1010 downsized its news room in favour of greater reliance/contribution from the mother ship (CTV).  Does this mean that the previous model when they had a full newsroom not profitable?  If so, how does this square with GNR640 where they have a larger newsroom and have generally lower ratings.  Would GNR640 be even less profitable but their management is OK with the business moded?

If memory serves correctly, Peter Truman co-anchored Global news with Peter Desbarats through the 70's.  I thought they made a good team.  Peter D would later become Dean of Journalism at Western.

In my humble opinion, Bell should just end the agony and rebrand NT1010 to CTV Talk Radio Toronto or something like that akin to GNR640.  It appears that "news" is no longer in the mandate of the radio station.

This isn't about a prank but many years ago (back in the 70's or 80's), one of the radio stations in London had a contest featuring an all expenses paid weekend in Cleveland.  The second prize was two all expenses paid weekends in Cleveland.  As I recall, the radio station got an earful from Clevelanders who eventually heard about the contest.

Regarding Ken Jennings as host...I am in total agreement that he should be made permanent host.  I had some apprehensions before he started but he's been a natural following in Alex's footsteps making the show/contestants the centre of attention rather than himself.  I expect he will continue to improve.

I have to say that the Ron's interview with Don Fehr (NHLPA executive director) was one of the best segments of the "Conversation".  Ron's knowledge of the strife for racial equality in the U.S. was evident and through that insight he was able to conduct a poignant conversation with Don Fehr (who is American).  I thought the comments Don made concerning the racial movement requiring generational timeframes to fix was noteworthy.
