Bell appeals to cord-cutters with live TV streaming service Alt TV

TORONTO — Bell is offering TV viewers who abandoned their expensive cable packages a new cheaper option for live streaming.

The Montreal-based telecommunications company has unveiled Alt TV — a streaming service that acts like a traditional cable package.

The service lets viewers stream live programs through devices like Apple TV, on their computers and through smartphones or tablets.

It starts at $14.95 per month for a package of 30 channels, which includes Canadian networks CBC, CTV, Global and City and the big U.S. networks ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

More expensive packages are also available and individual channels can be subscribed to à la carte.

The service is only available to Bell's Internet subscribers. It is launching first in Ontario and Quebec with plans to expand to Atlantic Canada and Manitoba.

The move comes as a growing number of Canadians scrap their cable packages in favour of embracing digital options like streaming services Netflix, CraveTV and Amazon Prime Video.

Re: Bell appeals to cord-cutters with live TV streaming service Alt TV

I find it funny that the CBC expert doesn't seem to know that they HAVE to protect the content behind a closed network, which is why you are required to have Bell Internet.   This is the same for any independent, and lead to Vmedia being sued by Bell and being told that the laws require cable channels to be protected behind a closed network.

Until the laws are updated by the Feds, and CRTC, this will be a requirement for the foreseeable future.

I also find it telling that this is the lead or close to it, on CFRB and other Bell Media stations, which is featuring what is essentially a commercial as a news story. They even have a so-called Mobile Syrup expert calling it "game changing" - a description which I would certainly question. Not saying they shouldn't cover it, but really, the lead?

Just monitored the 4:30 update on Rogers' 680 News. Not a word about it.

[Update] Just heard AM 640's 5 PM cast. No mention of Bell's move, either. So much for it being a "game changer."
