What Could iHeart Media's Bankruptcy Mean To Bell's Stations Here?
There have been increasing reports that iHeart Radio - formerly known as Clear Channel - is going to go bankrupt. It comes just a few months after Bell Media aligned all of its radio stations in Canada with the company and its online listening app.
An online article in Salon, with the provocative headline "Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity face uncertain futures with iHeartMedia" focuses on two of the company's biggest stars. But what happens to Bell's big investment here if the parent company that they've associated themselves with - including non-stop on-air announcements and complete redesigns of all their websites - has an iHeart attack and stops breathing? Just how deep is Bell in with this bloated floundering giant?

The IHeart app has been very successful in the US. Someone will own it and keep the brand and its contracts outside of America. Net effect on Bell is nothing.

Sorry Fester...I'd nodded off. Sometimes I need a fire alarm to go off in order to snap myself back to 'attention'. Thankfully we have both the National Anthem and God Save the Queen to keep me bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at the Legion meetings.
Can you imagine what would happen if some guy named Roger Bell signed on here? I'd never sleep.

I'm willing to argue that it depends on who ends up taking over iHeart media.
If it is sold to just the right source, the iHeart media name will vanish forever.
The difference will merely be a name change to match another company name out there.
iHeart media Canada will simply have a name change and life goes on...Ryan Seacrest content and all.

CHUM Fm's format/playlist was "tweaked" specifically for iheart radio back in 2016 meaning you wont hear anything older than 2011 on their list unlike before when they would dip into the 80s once an hour with a song.
Wonder if this would change back....

This isn’t the only high profile radio bankruptcy in the U.S. and it’s resulting in a huge sea change for some famous stations. Cumulus, which owns some of the biggest outlets down south (like WABC and WLS), has been going through tremendous turmoil after it got too big for its monetary britches.
The latest fallout shook the Chicago market like an earthquake on Tuesday, when it was revealed that the legendary WLUP-FM has been sold as part of the restructuring deal. Radio fans know it as The Loop, and even if you’ve never heard those call letters, you likely remember its most famous stunt – the infamous 1979 Disco Demolition Night held before a White Sox game at Comiskey Park that resulted in a near riot.
So who sailed through the Loop-hole? That may be the unkindest cut of all. After years as one of the premier rock stations in the U.S., the place has been purchased by a non-profit that will switch it to a Christian format. (It’s akin to what listeners here might feel if say, CHUM-FM or Q107 suddenly started playing classic country.)
As announcer Steve Dahl – the guy behind that disco disaster – noted, “I hope the last song they play there is AC/DC’s ‘Highway To Hell!'”
It won’t likely affect Canada all that much, but if iHeart suffers a similar fate, what follows in the U.S. probably won’t be pretty.

This is untrue.35% of the songs in rotation are pre-2011, and the iHeart deal had nothing to do with on-air programming strategy. It's branding, online content, and an app.

Gotcha. I just dont understand how they have CHUM and Virgin in the same building both playing literally the same format of songs (Virgin being more youthful and slightly "heavier" sounding, but barely.)

The ratings allow it. The stations both got into their respective formats before they became co-owned, and it didn't make sense to change the format of either given they're both top performers. While they may sound almost the same to guys out of either station's demo like us, they have quite different audiences.
