Will Brampton Get A New Station At 1190 AM?

The Commission is seeking comment on whether the city of Brampton can sustain another radio station, amidst two applications for - you guessed it - a new ethnic outlet. There are currently two in the running and both want to use the former CJMR frequency of 1190 AM. (One suggests a power of 1,500 watts day and a can't-be-heard- anywhere 68 watts at night, the other a fulltimer at 10,000 watts.)

All this comes after the Commission already greenlighted an ethnic station at 1350 AM for the city, which is due to come on air in 2017. This announcement doesn't mean the newcomers will get approval, only that the CRTC wants to know how yet another broadcast presence will affect the radio market in the GTA.

Call for comments on market capacity and the appropriateness of issuing a call for radio applications to serve Brampton, Ontario

Re: Will Brampton Get A New Station At 1190 AM?

The deadline to get comments/replies to the CRTC on the proposed new station has been extended from mid-December to January. Why? Corus, Bell and Rogers indicated they didn't have enough time. (They've done the same thing to a proposed new ethnic format on the so-called X-band in Ottawa.)

Yep, the usual suspects.

Gee, I wonder what their reaction will be to the presence of yet another radio outlet in the GTA - even if it is an ethnic format that won't affect them at all.
