Radio technology in 1957

This Globe article takes a look at radio technology in 1957, focusing on how CHFI gets its music on the air:

Re: Radio technology in 1957

That's a great article.  Canada's only FM though?  Didn't CBC start fiddling around on FM just after the war in 1946? Eng/Fre in Montreal, and Toronto and Vancouver I believe.  People will also argue CKOI was on the air in the late 40's also, definately by 1957.

Wonder if the tapes were as muddy in the late 50's as the carts were in the late 70's early 80's ?   It used to drive me crazy how muffled the FI music was compared to CKFM.   I offered at one point to re-cart the entire library on my own time because they sounded like crap, and was informed by a respected member of station management that "That's why radios have treble controls..  leave them alone".

I did..  I moved over to CKFM .    Vinyl and CD players...  I think the only carts we played at the time were jingle's and news stuff.  (as well as commercials obviously).  And CKFM had ITC delta IV decks..  complete with auto azmuth and fast forward.  No more white noise and manually moving the record head before recording on every cart.   Or the ultimate crime, waiting for 3 minutes and 36 seconds for a spot to re-cue because some clown had put a 30 second spot on a 3.5 minute cart.

I was a happy kid! .

CKFH had a great sound Iain. An all-around classy station.

Everything was classy about it, from the people to the sound.

Here's one for the wayback machine

Geez the guy on the right couldn't even put his cigarette down for one short photo op? SAD!
It's bad enough that smokers were allowed to smoke in studio.
Thankfully times have changed.
The pot smokers, once legal will gladly be told not to smoke in studio either.

That's Daynard in the checked shirt, John McFadyen with the fancy tie, Dave Agar behind him and Jeremy Brown, center rear.
We didn't get them all but if there's a prize, it goes to my source. Same address.
