Toronto's 93rd Homicide Victim Was An Editor At TSN

CTV News IDs him as Jonathan Gayle-West, but he was known to friends as Johnny Gayle. He was only 29.

He was found shot to death in a car on Islington Ave. in Etobicoke Wednesday night. It doesn't indicate it in the online story, but CTV's TV newscast confirms he worked at the sports network as a story editor and had extensive broadcast experience.

No arrests or a motive yet.

Sad news.
Sympathies to his family & friends.
40 years ago more than a few veteran Toronto police sergeants & staff sergeants told me the following......
They expected that Toronto would end up much like Detroit crime-wise.

CFTO did a nice profile of the victim on its Friday noon show, including footage of his audition for what he hoped would be a career in sportscasting.

Yesterday afternoon, both TSN, and Rogers, where Jonny Gayle previously worked, tweeted out the sad news of his death, sending condolences to his friends and family.

Many sports personalities, Elliotte Friedman, Bryan Hayes, and others tweeted their own messages, some also retweeted the message from police asking the public for dashboard camera footage if they were in the general area around the time of the shooting.

It has been years since there's been an update on this case, but the trial of the two men accused of the murder has finally begun. And it turns out, they were apparently not known to the victim.

This has been a very long time in coming, but there's finally been justice for a TSN employee who was murdered back in 2018. Jonathan Gayle-West worked at the sports network when he was gunned down by two 18-year-olds who were trying to steal his car. They were found guilty of second-degree murder.

The penalty is an automatic life sentence for both of these cowards.

Scott McArthur of CFRB's The Rush worked at TSN at the time and knew the victim. He paid a heartfelt tribute to him on the show Wednesday afternoon.

His killer has been sentenced to life in prison, which in this case, means no possibility of parole for 18 years.
