SOWNY Topic #2500: Two Ex-Broadcasters Win, Three Lose In Election

Welcome to the 2500th topic posted to the SOWNY Board. It's a credit to all contributors that we've reached that milestone.

So what is the post about? It's a quick look at how several former broadcasters did in Monday's municipal election. The results were mixed.

The two victors were Dan Carter, who used to be with CHEX-TV and has gained much attention because he was once homeless. He's now mayor of Oshawa.

Lance Brown, the former sportscaster for CTV, who was let go in a purge last November, has become the councillor for Scugog Ward 5.

But three didn't make it - Karlene Nation, a former CTV reporter, lost her bid for a council seat in Toronto Ward 10, Spadina-Ft. York.

Terry Johnston, a one-time CKDO announcer, failed in his bid to occupy a regional council seat in Whitby.

And our old friend and sometime SOWNY contributor Bruce Marshall came in a distant second in the race for regional council in Brampton.

Is this post 2500 since 1998, or is this since the latest incarnation of SOWNY since 2015?

Cheers,
Jody Thornton

Did anybody listen to 960-CKNT to see if they covered the Brampton and Mississauga elections?

As for loser ex-politicians winning in radio, Mammoliti seems to have scored nicely. He's being courted like a debutante at a redneck kegger.

Re: SOWNY Topic #2500: Two Ex-Broadcasters Win, Three Lose In Election

Actually, a third former radio broadcaster also won a seat on council - in Orangeville, Joe Andrews was elected as one of five town councillors - a part-time position.  Joe remains Campus Principal of the Orangeville campus of Humber College and used to consult for Z103.5.  He also taught and was Program Head for the Radio Broadcasting program at the North Campus of Humber College.   Joe also put on his platform shoes once when he was on-air at the old 790 CHIC in Brampton when it was an all-disco radio station.   Congrats Joe!!

In the car yesterday in the space of maybe 3 minutes the talk show topic veered from capital punishment to issues about fire halls. I asked the flea sitting on my dashboard what it thought but it keeled over, dead.

That was stupid talking about a National issue at a time when local issues matter.
Good that they quickly shifted to talk about fire halls...a more local issue. It's still more provincial, but if they can use the excuse about where a building should be, maybe they can pass that off as a local topic.

Even then, they should have reported on who is leading in the election...at least hourly, if at all.
Maybe for the Federal election next year (Monday October 21, 2019) they'll have more to talk about...but then, so will NT 1010.
CKNT really missed the (local) boat. Such a shame...

Also, Karlene Nation, a former CFTO reporter, lost her bid to become a Toronto City Councillor. She's previously lost as a PC MPP candidate.

Garth Riley a host on Rogers cable 10 in Durham (yes it is still on the air) and formerly on Live at 5 on Chex TV  Durham...lost the school trustee gig in Oshawa!

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...
