WECK Buffalo Gets New Extra FM Frequency

The Buffalo News reports that reinvented WECK, which recently hired a lot of veteran and legendary Western New York radio talent, is getting yet another FM repeater.

The station existed for years as a one lung local signal at 1230 AM, which is tough to get in Buffalo, let alone Toronto. It then expanded to 102.9, but that's blocked here by Hamilton's CKLH, aka K-Lite FM.

Now the News says they're adding yet another frequency designed to increase their reach to the north.

"The Northtowns will be able to hear WECK much better this spring after the FCC granted the station the frequency of 100.5 FM, which will serve that part of Western New York. The station is covered in the metro area by the AM signal and in the Southtowns by 102.9 FM. Station owner Buddy Shula said the new frequency could be up and running in late spring."

Whether there's any chance that new signal could leak into the GTA remains to seen - er heard, but the closest station on that frequency at present is CKRU from Peterborough. With CHIN-FM in the way at 100.7, and adjacent stations at 100.3 from Barrie and Waterloo, I doubt we'll be able to hear it OTA here, but it's still worth a shot when the new signal debuts.

The translator will be 250w max and will be highly directional. It will be located somewhere in Tonawanda.

In contrast, when the CRTC allows an AM station to convert to the FM band, within months, the AM signal is shut down.

Some AM stations stay on the air with the FM being a repeater.
Oshawa's 1580 (which moved from 1350 several years ago) stays on the air even though they have a repeater @ 107.7 FM
