Whoa Nellie! He was in the business for 50 years and became a legend calling everything from U.S. College Football and Major League Baseball to the Olympics. How famous was Keith Jackson? Forget about all his on air work. He inspired a character seen occasionally on The Simpsons, an over-the-top sportscaster who tries to inject excitement into the most boring games possible. Now that's true fame!
He was 89.
Legendary sportscaster Keith Jackson dies at 89
I regret that I never got the chance to meet him at some of the sports events I covered when he was in attendance. As a college football lover, to me he was the perfect announcer for the zest and zeal of autumn afternoons in US college towns. And while, “he’s a 5’ 10” pine-knot from Tuscaloosa, Alllabama - and he’ll hitchee”, isn’t a direct or accurate quote, it’s an example of the style he used to perfectly accompany the college game. RIP.
