CBC Radio 1 93.5 CBCL London

I am about 170 miles south of their transmitter. I'm in Ridgway, Pennsylvania using a Sangean HDT1 and 5 element log periodic FM antenna pointed right in that general direction. It is consistently my most often heard Canadian signal, usually there almost every day. sometimes poor to barely fair but pretty regularly, it's good.

Today, Tuesday January 2nd it was strong enough for over 90 minutes beginning at about 730am to light up the RDS on my radio.

I hope you don't mind me sharing some of my pictures and audio of my FM DXin'g from here in NW PA as it relates to stations in Ontario

Here's my audio recording and picture:

As an addition on the subject of CBC Radio, here is CBL-FM-2 90.7 , Paris Ontario.

The signal gets a bit weak and cruddy, but hey.. it's there and something is better then nothin, right?

CBC Radio 1, CBCL 93.5 London. Pretty good signal today, a little crackle/static but RDS did show up quite often. About 170 miles distant, 100KW at 759feet. Recording is end of "The Current", station ID, promo for "The Q" and beginning of national news. Wednesday January 3rd, 958am Eastern.

I am fascinated by this as well even though in this day and age you can usually get a good feed for broadcasts via the internet ( save for some geo blocking issues).

One problem is that there is actually very little to listen to on terrestrial radio.

The Toronto radio dial is too crowded for us to likely have similar success. I still remember the outdoor antenna via which I pulled in so many stations during the 1970's plus cable FM had more American options and even stereo feeds for AM well into the 1990's I think.

Anyway I would like to see a video of your antenna  and positioning if possible.

Re: CBC Radio 1 93.5 CBCL London

I lived in North York at the time, and had incredible luck when the weather was right. Stations from Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Ohio and more came in - and just as quickly faded out - but if you were around an FM radio when it happened, you could spend hours picking up the most amazing finds.

(There was one summer afternoon in the 70s when it went absolutely bonkers, and everything was coming in from everywhere, including on both VHF and UHF TV. I couldn't tell you the date, but I will never forget that specific day. All these years later, there's never been another one even remotely like it.)

And then came the Iron Curtain - that damned CN Tower - and everything pretty much ended forever. There are still days I'd like to get an ax and chop that monstrosity down!

Whats funny is I rarely hear anyone DX'ing a CN Tower facility station from afar lol

Re: CBC Radio 1 93.5 CBCL London

With an outdoor antenna the CN tower was not too much of a factor for me. Not sure what your experience was Tim.

I was not able to pick up Michigan stations regularly though from my location near the Scarborough bluffs. upstate NY and Pennsylvania were regulars or semi regulars.I remember two skip condition days which RA mentions. One was when the dial turned all Florida and another when it converted to Michigan. Not for long though. About two years ago in the car something similar happened and I was able to pick up a station from Wyoming for about 20 minutes.

Cable FM was another way of pulling in decent far away or weak signals. I started to listen to CFNY in 1976  before the CN tower move via cable and one day around 1977 I picked up CHEZ FM from Ottawa on the cable FM. Was not part of the lineup but it was coming in on a relatively weak signal.

Not too many people used cable FM in those days and by the late 80's and 90's it was a good way of getting 1050 CHUM in stereo. Sounded way better than the AM stereo receivers.

The play list sucked by then (whether mono or stereo) but I truly miss Nanci Krant and Henny

Playlist was generally limited during 1050 CHUM's two tries as an oldies station but the morning show with Bob Magee and co had excellent music trivia contests. They would change it up daily sometimes it was the opening line of the day, there was also confusion where two tracks were played together or password where they would play snippets from songs to make a word and more. Magee's knowledge of the music was impressive.
