"Chickenman" Creator & Voice Dick Orkin Is Gone

The guy who created one of the great mini-features of radio has died. The daughter of Dick Orkin confirms her father suffered a stroke on Saturday and passed away on Christmas Eve. Orkin was a great radio voice and created some of the medium's most creative spots. But it's for the syndicated Chickenman for which he'll forever be remembered. It aired around the world on 1,500 stations at its peak (it was on CKFH here) and became a major listener draw.

Orkin was 84.

For a time in the 70's we really could say, "He's Everywhere! He's Everywhere!"

Voice of Chickenman is gone

His spots still run on Vancouver radio, for Vancouver Job Shop.com.
They really stand out amongst the dreck that passes for radio advertising these days.
Two of the most creative radio geniuses now are gone, Orkin and Freberg.

This is sad news.
Chicken man is a timeless classic!

I first heard Chickenman in the early 80's when Q107 carried it. The show lives on the radio dial weekday mornings at 9:25 on Northumberland 89.7, streaming on line at www.northumberland897.ca

One of greatest memories of being at CKFH in the late 60's early 70's was listening to Chickenman.  Dick Orkin was a creative genius. R.I.P.

WWKB/1520 carried Chickenman segments when they flipped formats to oldies(or "real oldies", if you wish)in 2003.

Orkin was brilliant.
"Put your nose on your knee -- and hop, hop, hop like a big bunny."
