Re: Moore in the Morning...

Methinks some kind of linkup with Bill Carroll at CFRA Ottawa, who debuts on Monday.

Re: Moore in the Morning...

Or maybe it's a retirement of some sort?

WHAT HAPPENED??  Was it a discussion about the recent TTC snafu?  Did CFRB have a panel for this announcement?  Was there talk about Christmas music ratings?  Maybe something about skinny cable?

Official announcement: Dave Agar is retiring. He'll be around only until the end of March.

Re: Moore in the Morning...

When Wally Crouter retired we were invited to Woodbine to see him off.    Great party.     What will they do for Dave Agar?    Fallsview?      Casino Rama?

Re: Moore in the Morning...

This comes at a very interesting time, considering what else happened in the past week. And it highlights a very different approach to a longtime on air person leaving his perch.

I'm sure CFRB will make a lot of noise about Agar's looming departure at month's end, given the hype they already expended in the last 24 hours about tuning in at 8:15 AM for a "big" announcement concerning the fate of Moore in the Morning. I can hear it now - "Hear Dave Agar's last "News & Views" all this week!" "Hear Dave Agar's final newscast after a storied career at NewsTalk1010" etc. etc.

Compare and contrast that with Gord Martineau, who left City TV on Feb. 29th without so much as a single goodbye or any notice to viewers after 39 years as the face of the station. In fact, most staffers didn't know he was going, either. I called a friend of mine who works there and he'd just gotten home after doing his shift on the 6. When I asked him about Martineau's retirement, he told me he hadn't even heard of it!

I'm not sure which one is the better way to go out, but Martineau, whom I'm told was never a big fan of Rogers ham-fisted bloated management and all the firings that's gone with it, definitely cheated CityNews out of a potential rating bonanza by bowing out the way he did. The station almost certainly would have exploited his imminent departure with weeks of tributes and "celebrate Gord's last month." I'm guessing the ratings for his final newscast, had they been able to make a big deal about it, would have been huge.

So who did this right? I'll leave that for wiser heads here to debate. But it sure is an interesting clash of approaches to a rare event in broadcasting - two venerable and prominent personalities taking their leave almost at the same time in entirely different ways.

It's not the 6. It's actually back to just being two hours of CityNews.
It was never really "The 6" in the first place.
It was always CityNews @ 6.
Gord got his good bye cake.
It was announced that no one is replacing Gord. (even though he is gone)

Please stop calling it "the 6". Thanks.
CityNews @ 6 is what it is.
