CRTC Rejects Argument There's Only Room For One Station In This Market

The CRTC has decided that Bracebridge/Gravenhurst shouldn't be one radio-station town(s), despite the fact that the single commercial station that exists there claims it's losing money hand over fist because of out of market tuning and a downturn in radio advertising in general. The commission will soon be issuing calls for applications for new outlets, after Bayshore applied for a new station there - and Vista, the current owner of CFBG-FM, not surprisingly tried to stop anyone else from entering their turf.

I don't know a lot about that particular market, but it's kinda fascinating to watch these two opponents circle each other with specious arguments that protect their own self-interests. To add a further wrinkle, a few intervenors complained that Bayshore wants the frequency where a low power tourist information station currently sits. (Does anyone really listen to tourist info stations for longer than about a minute and a half?)

In the end, the CRTC didn't buy Vista's plaintive poverty pleadings, and it looks like there could be at least one new player in that market in the coming years.

CRTC: Is Gravenhurst/Bracebridge Big Enough For Another Station?

That reads to me like they WON'T be issuing a call.
"...the Commission finds that it is not necessary to issue a call for applications and that it would be appropriate to publish Bayshore’s application for consideration during the non-appearing phase of the next feasible public hearing. "

Market size doesn't matter.
The incumbents always bitch and whine when someone else wants to move in on "their" territory.
It was ever thus.

Most definitely not. Doing music research in an un-rated uncompetitive market is pointless. Local content and involvement should consume 100% of available resources.

So-called "local" is "the MOOSE" which is rock. Its competition is 104.1 Midland, Rock 95.7 Barrie and Big 101.1 (essentially Q-107) Barrie.

Bayshore serves the elevator and dental office market.     Not remotely competitive

102.3 should be on-air any day now... I see the 102.3 TIS there has been granted 98.3.

bayshore needed to get that tourist station off the frequency before it could launch
