Radio Stations' CanCon Protest? Well, Not Exactly

But see if what's happening on stations in France rings a bell with anyone who's ever been forced to play sometimes subpar Canuck content on radio outlets in the Great White North. (Of course their rules are designed to prevent those nasty Anglais-types from penetrating their culture...)

French radio stations boycott Gallic songs

What's really amazing about this is that the stations would be allowed to simply stage a boycott of a government edict. But it also shows how stupid quotas tend to be in the first place. My guess is that most outlets here would be too scared of the CRTC reaction to dare try anything like that here.

Who forced you?     Why are Robin Lane and Freddy Vette and John O'Mara able to come up with CanCon gems to enhance their oldies programs while the Toronto outfit that disappeared in 2009 and the Hamilton one that died over Labor Day weekend seldom (if ever) could?

Sadly, they're anomalies these days. Most stations have pre-programmed supposedly "safe" music playlists - that's who "forced" it.

And I don't have to tell you those latter two you mentioned were among the worst of those, with the infamous 300 hits played over and over and over again. Jocks never got to choose those "gems" you reference. Instead, it was a steady diet of Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray and Andy Kim. Which is why on an older incarnation of SOWNY those three artists in particular almost became punchlines for what was wrong with the oldies format. It's nice those guys you mentioned get the freedom. Most don't.
