Do Reporters Covering Hurricanes Exaggerate For Dramatic Effect?

Bill Maher called it "weather porn" on last week's Real Time. He was talking about the amount of coverage being given to Hurricane Florence. While acknowledging that it was a serious storm, he noted it was only affecting one or two states and he believed the coverage was way over the top.

Which brings us to veteran weather guy Mike Seidel, who's been toiling for the U.S. Weather Channel for decades. He became an object of ridicule after he went on air doing a struggling-against-fierce-winds stand-up - only to have two people casually strolling by behind him seemingly without any trouble at all. See what you think:

For its part, the Weather Channel defended its reporter, claiming he was standing on grass not concrete and was exhausted from being up for hours covering the story, leaving him less than sure footed. Not sure that excuse is flying as fast as the wind that day.

But it makes you wonder about some of the coverage you see and whether it's made worse than it really is. Trouble is, it makes it harder for the public to trust the warnings, and those are usually very real.

Guess I'm going to be the ornery old guy again. Normally a big Maher fan, I accept his point but that's
"one or two states" too many. Anybody watching the coverage can plainly see there are many people going through hell as the waters continue to rise, not to mention the death count. If past history is any gauge (Puerto Rico, anybody?), time will add to the numbers.
The Seidel clip speaks for itself.

Not to take anything away from the seriousness of those who are affected by the hurricanes but...

Just a few weeks ago there were some heavy showers in downtown Toronto.  Yes there were some floods and waterlogged cars but the way the media was describing it, you would think the entire GTA was under water.  At my place (around Yonge/Steeles) we had a brief shower and that was it.  It was bone dry by the time the news reports of sightings of Noah's Arc were coming in on CityPanic24.  I was getting e-mails from friends hoping that we were OK.

The very worst of the storm may very well only affect a relatively small area but to hear some of these reporters tell it, Armageddon is close at hand.  (Then there are those with Ford Derangement Syndrome but that's for another topic.    )
