Station Owner Finds Success By Rejecting Corporate Radio

What difference can an owner make to a radio station?

Consider one who would:

-Get rid of lucrative national corporate advertising because it doesn’t fit the format, while reducing the amount of commericals overall
-Hire real live disc jockeys who actually know their music and let them play what they want
-Widen the playlist by rejecting the same worn out oldies and classics
-Have people on air who know the community and are willing to discuss things happening locally and
-In addition to advertising revenue, take pledges from devoted listeners to help augment what is essentially a commercial radio station.

Sounds almost unthinkable in the days when the Rogers and Bells of the world (or in this case the iHearts, Cumulus-es and Entercoms) have so thoroughly taken over everything. Yet there’s apparently one place in a legendary New York town that’s doing everything right thanks to the approach by its owner. And it’s proven a recipe for amazing success for more than a quarter of a century.

It’s not a local outlet, but I found this story really interesting simply because of how this guy has created a throwback to a different time and made it work in an era when most would say it couldn’t.

A great station. I used to listen now and then. We could use a risk taker like the owner of this station and if not in Toronto then maybe somewhere just outside the GTA.
