Niagara Falls-Area FM Stations Get A New Owner – And Big Promises

Looking for a new gig? There may be some opportunities at the only radio stations left in Niagara Falls and Ft. Erie, Ontario. On Monday, the CRTC approved an ownership change for CFLZ-FM and CJED-FM in those cities, transferring control of the licences from Vista Radio to Byrnes Communications.

The latter company owns CIHR in Woodstock and made a host of promises in order to secure the transfer.

Among them:

“...improve the music library, train personnel, hire new personnel and improve the infrastructure.

The applicant stated that it may purchase a new transmitter to cover the authorized contours fully.

In addition, as the only radio operator who would have a local presence in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie, Byrnes stated that it would develop local programming specifically targeted to these communities, similar to what it has done in Woodstock.”

“…The Commission considers that the transaction will help preserve the diversity of voices in the market.”

How exactly having one owner improves the diversity of voices in the market is an open question but both stations have been struggling financially for a while and this may well be the only way to save them.

At one point, the solution to "save them" was to use one of the stations as a repeater.
Will Byrnes media cry out that they need a repeater to survive??

At one time, attempts were made to appeal to U.S. listeners, but it failed likely due to Can-Con and a saturated market in Buffalo.

Can Con might not have been the issue. The CRTC was not happy with a Canadian licenced station serving Buffalo instead of Niagara falls Canada, where the licence was intended to be issued for.

"WiLD 101". The station entered into a local marketing agreement with
Citadel, who operated the station as part of its BuffaloNew York cluster. That LMA was discontinued when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission threatened to revoke the station's licence."
