Pillow Talk

I don't work in radio.  Just an addicted listener, with a question.  How does it work with ads for 'My Pillow'?  Do the on-air hosts actually get paid for endorsing this thing, or is it part of some contract with the station?  There are so many personalities flogging the thing, there must be something in it for them.  How does it work?

Yes, seriously.  These days, with stations hungry for any ad revenue, do all these shills get paid, or is it part of some kind of arrangement between the advertiser and the station?  Nothing would surprise me.

Re: Pillow Talk

I bought one and it changed my life.  Now I'll never miss another night of great sleep.

Re: Pillow Talk

Bought 4...plus the mini pillows that come with the order.  GREAT pillows but those buttwursts wouldn't leave me alone.  E-mail, after e-mail, AFTER e-mail trying to get me to buy more of their 'stuff'.  Had to send them a PISS OFF already e-mail to get them to stop.  Bite the hand that feeds you?  Bite ME.  Pure stupidity.

We used to...back in the later 70s...run adds for specialty product/clients.  We were supposed to get a 'cut'.  Never really made a ton of profit going that route.  That that marketing 'ploy' is back...if indeed it is...is just cyclical.

Re: Pillow Talk

I could swear that I heard vox actor Kelly Cutera say that she wasn't doing their promo anymore. Who dumped who? She wasn't any worse at the job than the rest.

They seemed to have learned from that pizza outfit, as My Pillow is now 2 - 4 - 1.  Probably tastes about the same too.

Does Bill Carroll flog these things in Ottawa?  He'd be all over this like a pit bull on a pork chop.

Why does Bill consistently get flack, here on this board, for these things? How is he any different than John Moore and Konnetico(sp?), Matt/Suprivia, Stafford, Oakley, Richards, Tashia, Kelly, etc., etc., etc.,???

Re: Pillow Talk

Thanks for saying that!  As a friend I'm often reluctant to stick my oar in when those comments are made, but I've always thought, and Bill and I have laughed about the same thing.

'RB has always been pretty strict about the number of products associated to any hosts.  (much to the hosts chagrin at times!)

Without being a total smartass, I've often thought that this is exactly why companies do have Bill do their stuff, because he obviously presents their copy or his in a way that cut through, and that's the point of it all in the end anyway.   Some posters round these parts can quote Bill's sponsors chapter and verse,  yet when you consider hosts on stations all over the city do the same thing, how many of 'their' sponsors jump to mind.    Especially with testimonials, there's a difference between 'presenting' the copy, and motivating and involving the listeners to a point where they want to become actively involved in whatever campaign it is.

it's not fair to suggest she was 'dumped'.

I know the agency likes to move the testimonials around at the various stations, between different hosts, different time periods etc.  The nice thing about the whole testimonial thing is that the announcer gets to put their 'spin' on the presentation, and it's always a bit of a refresher when they move to another host who can not only promote it personally in their daypart, but also throughout the clock.

A change is as good as a rest, and this is especially true when there are radio salespeople involved, and the option is a change or rest in the campaign .

Re: Pillow Talk

Casting no aspersions on anyone selling this thing, but this is from the Washington Post back in Nov. of  2016.

Infomercial sleeper "My Pillow" gets $1 million wake-up call over false medical claims

That's a bitter pillow to swallow.

He's no different at all.  So, does he shill for them, or not?

I heard her mention she won't be doing the promo.

Since no one can answer your query. I'm assuming no one here listens to Bill.

Maybe, perhaps, because Ottawa is not part of Southern Ontario or Western New York? 🧐

I've often wondered that myself.

Re: Pillow Talk

Newstalk 1010 is airing a My Pillow ad nimbly voiced by Robert I💓StarWars Turner and he mentions that there's only two weeks left to get in on the offer.

So many brave hosts have determinedly plowed through the copy during live reads.

So many of us had to struggle to listen to the sales pitches.

Can we dare to dream the pillow fight is almost over?

I heard the inventor of My Pillow on Coast to Coast over the weekend with my boy, Richard Syrett.

Re: Pillow Talk

I think I liked Pillow talk better in AM 640's music days. It was a lot like CFTR's Love em or leave em.
Oh? That's a completely different pillow talk? Never mind...

Yeah, it'll be over around the same time that Jack's "going out of business" and Tom's half-year long Boxing Months sales are over.

Tom's making popups? I wish Zane Caplansky (love that earworm Let's Eat show intro) would open his next restaurant near Yonge and St Clair. His foodie show on 1010 on the weekend can be interesting in an inside baseball kind of way.

It is, yes. Then, Father Time gets in the radio and crunches his way through his Alzheimer afternoon.
