Another Oldies Station Bites The Dust - And Takes Red Robinson With It

I was listening online to CISL-AM in Vancouver a few weeks ago, on the occasion of radio legend Red Robinson celebrating his 80th birthday on air. The station, known as C-Isle, has been an oldies format for a while now but like its Ontario predecessors, it's soon to go from rock to jock, after Rogers wrestled it out of Newcap's hands and changes it to yet another Fan-like format.

Just like in Toronto, Vancouver already has an all sports station - two in fact, with the same branding, TSN 1040 and TSN 1410, which seems like a complete waste of one of those frequencies to me. In any event, when Rogers scooped up the rights to the Canucks, there were questions about where those games would air. And now we know - on the place Robinson has been calling home for the last few years.

When the new format debuts in the fall, it marks the end of yet another AM oldies outlet in Canada, in each case to sports. Of course, we all know what happened to CHUM and CKOC here, even though both need magnifying glasses just to see their miniscule ratings. It will be interesting to see if a radio market can actually sustain three all sports channels - and if this is the final conclusion to Robinson's remarkable broadcasting career.

Sportsnet to launch Vancouver all-sports radio station this fall

By the way, TSN 1040's morning man is none of other than "Brother" Jake Edwards, who some here will remember as a fixture on Q107 back in the day. Judging by the comments section in the linked piece above, he's an acquired taste - and not many are looking forward to the coming of Sportsnet 650.

Re: Another Oldies Station Bites The Dust - And Takes Red Robinson With It

Oldies stations fail because there still isn't one to do it right yet.  AND all of those failures have paved the way for those who follow to nose dive into the abyss as well.

There's no air in THOSE tires.  There's NO ONE at the wheel.  The top is down and it's pouring rain, hail, sleet and snow.  AND...the number of people who want to hear those tired, burnt out, over-played-to-death 'losers' even one more time has shrunken to a meaningless number.

There's a way to make it work.  Assuming that your potential audience is entirely well past dead isn't it.

Thanks for blowing it.

AM 650's slogan "smooth and easy" was ample warning that the playlist would be heavy on Carpenters, Neil Diamond and Michael Buble, which it has been for years.  Elevator & dental office muzak
