My AM presets:
590
680
740
1010
820

I listen to AM radio very occasionally, mostly to 740 and 1010.  I also listen to FM very occasionally to 88.5, 96.3 or 99.1
Most of the time, my car radio is set to Sirius XM for easy listening music on Escape. My other XM favourites are
Radio Classics, The Bridge, Love, 50's on 5, 60's on 6, BBC News, and CNN only for breaking news. I find that I listen to XM much more than terrestrial radio whether at home or in the car.

I stopped listening to Buffalo AM stations many years ago.  In the early 50s at the tale end of radio’s golden age,
WBEN was an NBC affiliate. Around 1953 or 1954 it switched to CBS affiliation.and carried the remaining CBS
comedies and dramas that were slowly disappearing from radio. Even after these programs were gone, I relied on WBEN for news coverage from CBS which was tops for American radio,  for a few years, CBS actually had 10 minute radio newscasts at the top of every hour.  Through the years, the station concentrated mostly on local news and dropped CBS affiliation and became another mouthpiece for Rush and right wing blabbers. What a decline for the station and many others like it.

RadioActive  there is an alternative to SN 590 for radio coverage of the World Series.  Buffalo's WGR 550 is carrying the ESPN Radio coverage;  as well, for those with Sirius XM, the games are on XM channel 89. I find that AM reception for any stations outside Toronto (including Buffalo) in newer cars is atrocious. There were some technical problems with the MLB international feed on Sportsnet TV last night (picture freezing & lost sound) so I wound up watching the Fox coverage for the last half of the game.  I agree that there is no reason why Rogers cannot arrange for the ball games to be carried on another Toronto station when 590 is not available.

Actually there were a number of ABC shows in the 1960s on channel 7 that were quite good and got high ratings.
Here are some that I remember which were as good or better than those on CBS or NBC:

77 Sunset Strip; My Three Sons; Donna Reed; Naked City; The Rifleman; ; The Untouchables; Ben Casey;
Dick Cavett Show; Maverick; The Flintstones; The Outer Limits; The FBI; The Hollywood Palace; Peter Gunn;
Bewitched; The Real McCoys; Cheyenne; The Fugitive; Lost in Space; McHale's Navy; Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
ABC's programming was definitely NOT TERRIBLE.....CBS dominated the ratings in the 1960s and ABC deserves
a lot of credit for airing the above shows. many of which turned out to be classics. I remember all of them very fondly.;

I enjoy this forum and like maybo I am also disturbed by cGrant's attitude and vitriol. Everybody is entitled to his own opinion but cGrant's acerbic attitude is uncalled for. The new way is not always the better way. I enjoy hearing from those folks on this forum who have worked in the media for many years and have valuable constructive criticism to offer regarding changes in policies and procedures. I also enjoy hearing and reminiscing about the good old days.
If cGrant cannot post with civility, he is free to unsubscribe..

How are you able to access WIOD and other U.S. IHeartradio stations online?  They appear to be geoblocked for me.
I have no problem tuning in to WFTL West Palm Beach or WOKV Jacksonville.  WFTL  has been carrying the audio for the CBS-TV outlet channel 12 in Palm Beach.

This is an article from the Huffington Post from back in 2011 which explains how right-wing talkers came to dominate the major AM U.S. talk stations. It is a travesty that the FCC allowed Clear Channel to take over the major AMs in the U.S. and program them with their own Premier Radio Network content. It's amazing that the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity & Savage continue to hang on to Trump's sinking ship.
The CRTC has many faults but it is still not as bad as the FCC in this regard.

I enjoy instrumentals on SiriusXM's Escape channel as well as Don Andrews' easy listening Crystal Radio.
Don's channel reminds me so much of CKFM 99.9 from the 70s & 80s.

I do not like the CityNews format at all. I find it hard to believe that it rates highly with viewers 18 to 34; how many 18 to 34 yr olds watch an evening local TV newscast.....not that many to begin with.  In my opinion, CTV's Toronto newscast at 6PM is miles ahead of  Global, CBC or City at that hour.

I hope I'm wrong but I can't see HD Radio being successful in Canada. There is just not enough quality content on AM radio for listeners to want to hear the AM stations more clearly. I don't listen to 640 at all; very briefly to 680 or 1010;
short periods to 590 for a Jays game in the car. I would however really like to listen to AM740 in higher fidelity but cant get a good signal on 96.7 in North York. I'd like to see 96.7 get a power boost but that won't happen. I think it is unfair to have so many FM signals in the GTA playing the same kind of sound..(music??) and yet Zoomer radio could not get an FM signal to cover the whole GTA.

Excellent article in the NY Times yesterday on how CNN president  Joe Zucker originally launched Trump's media career when Zucker was head of NBC Entertainment at the time that The Apprentice first aired on NBC. When Zucker became head of CNN, he made sure that CNN devoted much more time to covering Trump during the Republican primaries than the other candidates, knowing that a Trump victory would mean windfall ratings for CNN. Does Trump really hate CNN's "fake news"?  This is so much BS...especially since Trump owes his success to Zucker and CNN.

With the disturbing news that the U.S. extreme right (i.e. Stephen Bannon) has infiltrated the Trump cabinet, I have been sampling some U.S. talk radio stations via online streaming to determine public opinion on this matter.  I checked WABC, WLS, WGN, WOR, WJR, WBZ (at night) and KMOX.as well as Sirius XM Patriot. I discovered, as I expected, a lot of pro-Trump rhetoric and virtually no criticism of his cabinet selections. Some hosts pontificating and shouting about the perils of illegal immigrants and Obamacare and the importance of building "the wall".as well as running down Clinton and the Democrats. These tirades were liberally interspersed with endless streams of commercials & hucksters., What a sad state of affairs of US AM radio....how the once mighty have fallen. Except for the all-news stations, the AM band in the U.S. is a vast wasteland and could be eliminated..

With two sports radio outlets in Toronto, why are some World Series games not being broadcast here? I was driving
Tuesday evening and wanted to listen to game 6. The Fan 590 had a Leafs game. Rogers other stations 680 and 92.5 were not carrying it. Of course TSN 1050 did not have it. I tried WGR 550....no baseball. Not surprising since Buffalo cares only about the Bills & Sabres.  I did manage to find it on XM channel 80 with Dan Shulman doing the play-by-play. Surely there are enough baseball fans in the GTA to justify broadcasting ALL the World Series games on local radio here. Arrangements could have been made with either TSN 1050 or another Rogers station. Any comments?

I returned from vacation recently to discover the totally new format for using the Rogers PVR called the Navigatr guide.. The old guide worked perfectly, was simple to use so if "something ain't broke, why fix it?"  The Navigatr is very frustrating and tedious to use. Yesterday, I was on the phone with someone at "the office of the president" for almost 30 minutes voicing my concerns and complaints. The old guide allowed you to select and record a program, with selected parameters and provided you with a simple list of shows already recorded and shows scheduled for recording.  Very simple & easy to use and understand. With Navigatr, once you select an item from the guide,you are presented with large iconic images of programs that are very tedious and frustrating to navigate with the arrow keys from your remote with very slow response time. You are given several save options with no indicator for choosing the final SAVE button. There is no simple list of recorded titles and no simple list of programs scheduled to record. I requested the option of going back to the old guide and was told that this is not possible. How can Rogers come up with such an abominable format for using their PVR?  If anyone agrees with me, please please call Rogers ombudsman's office or "office of president" to complain. We should not be forced to use something new when the old format was preferable.  Any comments?

I'm a fan of old-time radio and classic TV. There are numerous old-time radio and classic TV shows available on internet archive sites as well as YouTube.  When I'm visiting in the U.S. I am amazed at the various classic TV networks such as Antenna TV, ThisTV, Retro TV and MeTV that are easily accessible by cable or satellite. Why can't these networks be made available by cable/satellite in Canada?  Since I live in a condo, an outdoor HD antenna is not an option.  Maybe CHCH might consider affiliating with one of these networks as a viable format. Any comments?

This is a link to an article in Saturday's Toronto Star about how Paul Godfrey has used his power/position to manipulate Postmedia to capitalize on his own assets while allowing the Postmedia to go into decline.
http://www.thestar.com/news/insight/2015/11/27/postmedia-empire-falters-while-ceo-paul-godfrey-earns-millions.html

I texted John Moore this morning asking whether his Round Table panel (i.e. Christie Blatchford, Lawrie Goldstein) would consider discussing this article and its implications on the media in this country.  John  Moore responded that he did not think that the average listener cared that much about the newspaper business.  I guess John Moore and NT 1010 consider Trudau's nannies to be a more important issue than a faltering newspaper empire and its CEO.
Any comments?

I really miss the "Escape" channel on Sirius XM.  They moved it to online only but that eliminates listening in the car..
Satellite radio should be providing music and audio services that are not available on terrestrial radio. There are so many rock channels on the satellites but they can't devote just one channel to easy listeming instrumentals. Many subscribers have complained to Sirius XM but to no avail.  A facebook petition managed to collect about one thousand signatures. It's a shame that Sirius XM has a monopoly....obviously, they don't care about serving the needs of ALL their subscribers.

I listen to AM740 from time to time and can access the FM 96.7 outlet only in the car. I find that when I am in the mood to listen to oldies AM740 does not fill the bill....I get commercials, talk, news, etc. It would be great if 96.7 had more power and programmed continuous oldies...even on weekends. Why can't we have an FM oldies station in the GTA?
Surely we have enough seniors and fans of oldiers to support such a channel.
